Dear Friends, I wish to thank all those people who came up to me last weekend to offer thanks for the experience of the Parish Mission on November 4 and 5, and for the fantastic job that our speaker, Ken Yasinski, did in leading us not only in the Mission topic, but also in music and Adoration at the conclusion of each evening. “Where did you find him?” was the main question. My only response is, “By the grace of the Holy Spirit.” I had gone online and searched for “Catholic Mission” and his was one of the first I looked at. Because this was part of our preparation month before the dedi-cation of our new Chapel, and his incorporating Adoration as part of the experience, I zeroed in on him. I am grateful that so many of you attended and got so much out of it. When I texted him to make sure he got home safely, he sent back this picture. No more California 70-degree weather!

May the goodness of the Lord guide and bless us! Father Fred

Next week, we will have our annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Develop-ment. This collection supports pro-grams that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustaina-ble future for people across the country who struggle. In addition, 25% of the funds collected will remain in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Thank you for your generosity!

LIFE IS HARD, BUT HAVE NO FEAR Today’s readings take a fearless look at reality and reach a conclusion that we all know: life is hard. The prophet Malachi preaches fire and brimstone, warn-ing us that evildoers will perish in flames. Saint Paul offers his own warning to the Thessalonians: keep busy, but never become a busybody. He reminds Christians that the apostles themselves worked in “toil and drudgery” as a model for how we ought to contribute to our community. The Gospel returns to the apocalyptic tone of Malachi, describing the utter chaos of the end-times. We will know the end is near when violence, catastrophe, and hatred dominate the earth. But we must not fear! God’s saving plan brings peace to our hearts. Malachi speaks of the sun’s “healing rays,” and Jesus himself promises to protect every hair on our heads. Copyright © J. S. "Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10.... As I am on my way to weekly Adoration, I keep repeating this Scripture over and over to myself. Once there, I tend to start chatting away, not listening to what He wants to speak to my heart! I have learned through the years of going to Adoration, to approach the Monstrance where my Lord Je-sus is present, and practice this simple outline: ACTS... A: Adoration C: Confession T: Thanksgiving S: Supplica-tion. Once I have done this, then I go to Psalm 46:10...again; then I still my mind and listen. Sometimes the quiet is there for a long time, and I picture myself with my head upon His chest, resting in the arms of Jesus. And sometimes He speaks to me, indicating what it is that He desires of me, or He may confirm in me situations I have given to Him or just a time of being still and knowing the He is my God. This time in Adoration is a precious time; our busy, hectic lives, full of noise, demands, unimportant things are always there, outside waiting. So each week I long for my time with Him, to shut out everything and devote this time to be with my Jesus. I look forward to the day when our Adoration Chapel is complete and we have Perpetual Adoration and I am able to stop in and visit my Lord Jesus at anytime, day or night. Julie Crowley

Resurrection of the Dead

Q. What do Catholics believe about the resurrection of the dead?

A. Every Sunday, we proclaim in the Creed that we believe “in the resurrection of the body.” Does that mean Christ’s resurrection or our own? Both! Jesus’ resurrection is part of the work of salvation, but it’s also a sign of what’s to come. While death separates our bodies and our souls, this was not the intention of God when He first created us. It’s an effect of origi-nal sin. At the end of time, our bodies and our souls will be reu-nited. Scientifically, we may have questions about this, since bodies decompose over the course of centuries. Or what about the saints, whose relics are spread around the earth? How the resur-rection will happen is a mystery. But we know that our resurrected body will be our body. If we are in heaven, our body will be in a glorified state. Some theologians speculate what this glorification will be like based on Jesus’ resur-rected body. Will we be able to walk through walls? Will we eat, since Jesus broke bread with his disciples? We don’t really know the answers to these questions. We do know, however, that we will be free from the effects of the fall (such as sickness and pain) and physical defects that oc-curred in life. Christ redeems us as whole persons, body and soul! ©LP

Treasures from Our Tradition

We are faced with strong and dis-turbing readings today that hold a certain fascination, since they seem at first glance to be blueprints for future inevitable wars and hard-ship. A fundamentalist interpreta-tion focuses on this aspect. Yet we hear them at our Sunday celebra-tion of the Eucharist, which infuses them with hope and optimism. Ra-ther than dreading the future, to-day’s liturgy assures us that God is with us in all of life’s inevitable tri-als, and that we have a role in shaping the outcome of human his-tory. Occasionally, some Christians have attempted to decode these readings for an exact measure of the world’s end, but they have thus far been disappointed. “Nothing lasts forever” is a lyric from a Broadway show. Stars fall from the sky, leaves wither and fall, mountains wash into the sea, human projects and governments totter and collapse with great reg-ularity. Today’s liturgy opposes this idea as incomplete, reminding us that Christ has made a permanent change in human history, and that life in him is life forever. Rather than inviting us to throw in the tow-el, today’s liturgy strengthens us for acts of goodness and grace in our families, communities, and world. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. RESEMBLANCE The dignity of resembling the Almighty is common to all peo-ple; we should then love them all as ourselves, as living images of the Deity. It is in this that we be-long to God. —St. Francis de Sales FEAST DAY: NOV. 22

Did you know St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County accepts cars as donations too? We take cars that need only minor repairs and give them to our neighbors in need.

What are the benefits of donating my vehicle? • You may reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. • You can avoid the costs associated with sell-ing your car such as advertising. • There is no loss of privacy or possible security risk. You will no longer need to pay for insurance or car repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer, and in some circumstances vehicle registration isn’t required. For more information, please visit svdp-cc.org/donations-by-vehicle/ Do you have a vehicle that you no longer want? Get the process started at 925-439-5060.

For the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, St. Vincent de Paul is col-

lecting toiletries, toilet paper, wet wipes, new socks and gloves. These are items that our clients can use in addition to the food we supply. If you would like to donate any of these items, please use the contain-ers in the vestibule of the church. Thank you so much for helping our neighbors.

Please join us for Praise, Prayer, and Inspiration as we celebrate Advent and prepare for the coming birth of our Lord with our guest speaker, Father Erick Villa, Pa-rochial Vicar at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Brentwood. A native of the Philippines, his story of faith

began with his grandmother and her devotion to our Lady. He was eventually led to the United States to serve the Lord and bring the joy he has found to others, including the strong women of faith in Magnificat SOTI, whom he guides as their Spiritual Director. Men are always welcome to attend as well! Tickets: $33/$40 after Nov. 30. Good News… WOW! To the right is a photo of our new stained glass window for the Adora-tion Chapel. In the center is the Mon-strance where the Consecrated Host will be placed for Adoration of the Body and Blood of Christ. The creation and design of this unique window is the work of Roger Hogan, whose family did the stained glass windows in the church. We can be proud that this one-of-a-kind window will be the focal point of our Adoration for many years to come. Please continue to pray that all goes well in the next few weeks with the completion of the fine details and the final inspection by the City of Walnut Creek. And please remember to mark your calendars for Sunday, December 8, our parish Feast Day, when Bishop Barber will be here for the 11 a.m. Mass and a reception to follow. Thanks be to God!
