St. Teresa of Avila, Patroness of the religious and the sick

Avila is a town in Spain that we will be visiting on our 40th

Anniversary Pilgrimage. She is one of three women doctors of the church.

St. Teresa of Avila was born in 1515 in Avila, Spain. As a young child, she was obsessed with martyrs and saints. When she was 7, she convinced her brother to go with her to the moors and ask to be decapitated. Luckily, their uncle found them outside the town walls and brought them back. After her mother died when she was fourteen, her father sent her to the Augustinian nuns of Avila for her education. In 1535, Teresa entered into the Carmelite Monastery of the Incarnation in Avila. Throughout her time at the monastery, Teresa struggled with prayer versus the vanity found amongst the nuns and other visitors present. What spiritual life there was to be found involved hysteria, weeping, exaggerated penance and self-induced visions. Teresa also suffered from illness, which she allowed to distract her from prayer- for a time.

It was because of these experiences at the monastery that Teresa became so devout in her prayer and so adamant in her love for God and Jesus. She spent five years in religious seclusion where she had visions of Jesus and reflected in mental prayer and adoration. Teresa founded a reformed Carmelite convent in 1562, St. Joseph’s, which corrected the laxity which she had found in the Cloister of the Incarnation and others. At first, the absolute poverty of the new monastery caused a great scandal and subjected her to the Inquisition. However, the publicity gained from the disapproval led many postulants to her reform convents. Many people wanted to learn about prayer from her. Soon her ideas about prayer swept not only through Spain, but all of Europe. Between 1567 and 1571, reform convents were established at 7 different locations in Spain. During the last three years of her life, Teresa founded several more convents. In total seventeen convents, all but one founded by her, and as many men's cloisters were due to her reform activity of twenty years.

Teresa was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV. Her feast day is October 15

th. She was exalted to patroness of

Spain in 1617. She was also bestowed the papal honor of Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970 for her writing and teaching on prayer; one of the first two women to be awarded the distinction.

Another famous woman is Dorothy Day. Dorothy was a prominent Catholic, writer, social activist, and co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. The Catholic Worker is very active to this day with 216 communities in the USA (one in Detroit) and 33 communities throughout the rest of the world. In his address to Congress, Pope Francis names her an American icon of the stature of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. She is known for her quote, “Don’t call me a saint. I don’t want to be dismissed so easily.”

On October 29 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament 9844 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202, Dorothy’s granddaughter Kate Hennessy will share some of the key moments, struggles, commitments and dedications of her grandmother, Dorothy Day.

Peace,

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE HEAVENLY BANQUET The mountain of the Lord described in today’s first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us “RSVP” to God’s invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FAITH FORMATION

Deacon Ron Kenney, Director of Faith Formation Tel: 810-636-2216 E-mail: [email protected]

There have been many times in my life where I stood feeling alone and helpless, where I couldn’t do IT any more. One moment was my divorce. I failed at marriage. How could I get up in front of the church and preach when I was such a failure at what I should have been an example for? I remember those days and weeks oh so well. I would often look in the mirror and shout, I can’t do this! Listen to what St. Paul says today in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” They are some of the most encouraging words in scripture. I committed these lines to memory and recited them daily. Somedays, on the hour. They were words that helped me then and still continue to help me today. Alone, I am not that good. Neither are you. But Jesus assures us, we are not alone. He gives us the Power of His Spirit to conquer what might seem impossible. I can do it. You can do it. We can do all things in Him who strengthens us. Walk the Talk! Be Peace! – Deacon Ron
