Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

1. Who is Jesus?

Often today, when asked the question “Who is Jesus?” Catholics reply: “Jesus is the son of God”. While such a statement is true as far as it goes, it does not explain fully enough who Jesus really is. The problem is that we are all sons and daughters of God yet we are not God. So, while Jesus is the son of God, He is also God the Son. It is the

second part of the statement “...God the Son...” which gives the real clue to understanding the person of Jesus. Unfortunately, some theologians today have downplayed Jesus’ divinity. They stress His human qualities; His compassion, love, justice, social conscience and so on. In doing so they deny the fact that Jesus was not just a good man, not just someone chosen by God to do a special mission in Palestine. In fact, Jesus is God Himself. The name Jesus means in Hebrew “God saves”. The name Christ is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word “Messiah” which means “Anointed”. Saint John tells us that this is the divine name which alone brings salvation (John 3:5). Kings, priests and prophets were anointed as a sign of their special calling. Jesus was unique in that he was at one and the same time priest, prophet and king. Jesus is a member of the Holy Trinity, truly God. St. Irenaeus of Lyons would say: “...in the name of Christ is understood he who anoints, he who has been anointed, and the anointing itself by which he has been anointed: He who anoints in the Father, he who has been anointed is the Son, and he has been anointed in the Spirit, who is the anointing.” (Adv. Haer, III,18,3)

2. Jesus Christ is True God and True Man

This teaching is, to our human minds, impossible. It is a mystery of the Faith, one which we will never fully understand. Nevertheless, through His Church, Jesus has taught us about this profound mystery. The Church teaches that Jesus Christ is one person having two natures. This, itself, is contrary to our human experience. We see everything around us as having a nature, but only one nature: the tree has the nature of a tree, the man has the nature of a human being, a rock has the nature of a rock. The nature of a thing indicates the kind of thing it is. Logically, every created thing has one nature, its own particular nature. No created thing has two natures or it would be two things at one time, which is impossible.Accordingly, the tree does not have the nature of a man, nor the man a rock’s. Nevertheless, we are taught by the Church that Jesus has two distinct natures in one person. We are taught that Jesus Christ has a Divine nature, as God; and a human nature as man. Just as the tree is not a rock, so the natures of man and God are distinct, not blurred together. Yet the Church teaches that in one person, in all time, since His conception in the womb of a human mother, these natures are united by being in the person of Jesus Christ. Because Jesus possesses fully the nature of God and the nature of man we can describe Him as true God and true man.

Building a Campaign Team for Success

This weekend marks the official launch of St. Mark’s Building a Community to Worship as ONE campaign – a milestone fundraising effort to build our first church! All registered parishioners will receive a packet of materials about our campaign within a week. The packet has a case statement along with a letter from Fr. George that requests a pledge to the effort. Over the coming weeks, our team of volunteers will be reaching out to you to discuss the campaign, answer questions and seek your support. Due to our limited numbers of volunteers, we may not be able to personally contact every family – but we do hope that all families will choose to participate.

The launch of this effort also brings to light some common questions:

Question: How did you come up with my request amount?

The amounts are based primarily on giving history and answers shared in the planning study. Our goal is to challenge everyone to consider supporting St. Mark in a meaningful and sacrificial way, but also in a manner that works for each family.

Question: Who is being asked to support the campaign?

Every registered church family will be asked to participate in the campaign.

Questions: Why should I/we consider supporting the campaign?

Throughout the Bible we are reminded that we have been called by the Lord to build His kingdom. Building a new church doesn’t fall on the shoulders of one family or a few. It is the responsibility of everyone at St. Mark to hear God’s call and to continue to grow His ministry. This is an opportunity for everyone to help build our first Church.

Question: Will my pledge be legally binding? Will it be confidential?

A pledge is not legally binding, but it is a gift which you consider to be meaningful. We ask that you do your best to fulfill your pledge and advise the church of any financial changes that will impact your commitment. All pledges will be kept confidential.

If you have any questions/concerns about St. Mark Capital Campaign- Building a Community to Worship as ONE - please contact Joy Medley – [email protected] 502-671-9035.

GOD OUR FATHER,

You established our parish family 25 years ago as a humble dwelling place for your Son and a spiritual home for our families. Thank you for your countless blessings and for those, past and present, who have labored in love to make St. Mark a community of faith, love, and service. Please bless our campaign as we respond to your blessings by building a

church, a community to worship as ONE.We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest; Lay down, O weary one, lay down Your head upon my breast." I came to Jesus as I was, So weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, And he has made me glad.

2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold, I freely give The living water; thirsty one, Stoop down, and drink, and live." I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that lifegiving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in him.

3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world's light; Look unto me, your morn shall rise, And all your day be bright." I looked to Jesus, and I found In him my star, my sun; And in that light of life I'll walk Till trav'ling days are done.

Meditation: It Is Well

Grander earth has quaked before Moved by the sound of His voice Seas that are shaken and stirred Can be calmed and broken for my regard Through it all through it all My eyes are on You Through it all through it all It is well Through it all through it all My eyes are on You And it is well with me Far be it from me to not believe Even when my eyes can't see And this mountain that's in front of me Will be thrown into the midst of the sea So let go my soul and trust in Him The waves and wind still know His name It is well with my soul It is well with my soul It is well with my soul It is well it is well with my soul CCLI Song # 7021972 Horatio Gates Spafford | Kristene DiMarco | Philip Paul Bliss © 2013 Bethel Music Publishing For use solely with the SongSelect® Terms of Use. Closing: Jesus Saves

Hope is here Shout the news to ev'ryone It's a new day peace has come Jesus saves Mercy triumphs at the cross Love has come to rescue us Jesus saves Hope is here What a joyful noise we'll make As we join in heaven's song To let all the world know That Jesus saves Raise a shout to let all the world know That Jesus saves Free at last Every debt has been repaid Broken hearts can be remade Jesus saves Sing above the storms of life Sing it through the darkest night Jesus saves Free at last What a joyful noise we'll make As we join in heaven's song CCLI Song # 5322950 Nick Herbert | Tim Hughes © 2008 Thankyou Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing) For use solely with the SongSelect® Terms of Use.
