Helping refugee families make their way in their new American home.

Recently our parish Refugee Support Group delivered a “care package” to a refugee family from Central Africa Republic currently living in Rogers Park. The package included food items, warm clothes and household supplies. The Oumar Makail family consists of Oumar (father), Hadje Assafi (wife), Ali (12 ), Maki (4) and Bilale Oumar (2). Parishioners on the left are Barb & Rich Czaplewski. Parishioners on the right are Therese and Dave Brandenstein. If you would like to join our Refugee Support Group contact Tom Cordaro at 630-369-0777.

Our many donations are sorted and displayed for families to chose gifts for their loved ones. Volunteers help wrap gifts to take home.

Our Christmas Giving Tree Program was a great success this year thanks to the generosity of our parishioners and the hard work of our committee. Our donated gifts helped more than 100 families from St. Nicholas Parish in Aurora and our gift cards provided Christmas joy to families at Sacred Heart Parish in Aurora. Both of these parishes serve low-income immigrants.

Feed the Hungry… Your Light Shall Rise in the Darkness

Parish Social Mission Week, Feb. 2-9

Our next parish social mission weekend will be February 8/9th. Our theme, “Feed the Hungry … Your Light Shall Rise in the Darkness” is taken from both the first reading from Isaiah and the Gospel reading from Matthew. In the Gospel, Jesus calls his followers to let their light shine before others that they may see their good deeds. Isaiah reminds us that our fate is tied to the fate of the poor; “If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted, then light shall rise for you in the darkness.”

For these reasons we will be focusing our advocacy on our nation’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the first line of defense against hunger for those struggling to make ends meet. Last year alone, SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) served 40.3 million people. The program aims to improve food security by providing consistent, adequate access to enough food to support an active, healthy life. Beyond addressing food insecurity, SNAP bolsters the economy, generating $1.54 billion in economic activity for every $1 billion spent, and reduces health care costs. SNAP serves households who are most in need, with nearly 40% of SNAP households having incomes below 50% of the Federal Poverty Guideline.

In principle, SNAP is designed to provide temporary help to those in need and able-bodied adults without children are expected to meet work requirements in order to qualify. However, the law passed by Congress and signed by the president does provide a way for states to apply for a waiver allowing greater flexibility on meeting the work requirements. This waiver provision allows states to take into account the unique challenges facing local communities in their state.

Recently the Trump Administration has proposed a rule change that would limit the state’s ability to seek a waiver for the work requirement. They claim that with low unemployment there is no reason why able-bodied adults should not be working. For many who actually work with this population of adults --

including Catholic Charities offices across the country-- there are many mitigating circumstances that can make it nearly impossible for many of these people to meet the work requirements. In next week’s bulletin insert we will hear from those who have first-hand knowledge about this and will learn what they believe is needed to help this population.

Most provisions of the rule are slated to take effect on April 1, 2020, unless Congress or the courts act to stop or delay it. We will be focusing our advocacy postcards on our U.S. Representatives urging them to act to protect state’s option to seek waivers. If the rule is implemented, the nation would see higher rates of hunger and poverty and more strain of local food pantries and social service agencies.

The federal government would see some savings from these cuts to SNAP, but this rule change would also cause serious harm to individuals, communities, and the nation while doing nothing to improve the health and employment of those impacted by the rule. (The administration is not providing any additional resources for job training, transportation or job placement.) In addition, the rule would harm the economy, grocery retailers, agricultural producers, and communities by reducing the amount of SNAP dollars available to spur local economic activity.

Our fate is tied to the fate of the poor.

In our prayer, we hope to experience God…an encounter with a Presence that is both greater than ourselves and at the same time, intimate and one with us. Christians throughout the world are encountering this Presence through the practice of Centering Prayer: the Prayer of Consent. This Lenten contemplative journey may be for you if you:

Feel called to deeper experiences of silence

Long to free yourself from the tyranny of your habitual thinking

Already have a meditation practice you desire to deepen or if you wish to begin a practice

Wish to be part of a community of like-minded practitioners

The cornerstone of our 40-day journey together will be a daily period of Centering Prayer and spiritual reading. A sustained contemplative practice frees us from simple reaction as we become more present and open to God,

others and the world. The fruit of this practice is living a more grounded and loving life.

Whether you have been meditating for years or looking to start, you will be supported in your prayer with a half day retreat and four evenings for learning and sharing, a daily guide for your prayer and the opportunity to connect with others on the journey through video conferencing in an online meditation chapel.

Our facilitator is Al Gustafson. All sessions will be held in the Upper Room starting Sunday, February 23rd from noon-5 p.m. and the following four Monday evenings. The cost of the sessions is $75.00.

To register, please call the Parish Office (630-369-0777) or email [email protected].

Registration deadline is February 17th.

God’s Word To Us

Reflection on Lectionary Readings 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jan. 26, 2020

Calling all people: the prosperous and the poor.

Here we are, in the middle of winter, in late January – cold, wet, and DARK. The Readings today note that we have ‘seen a great light.’ Light breaks the darkness. ISAIAH and MATTHEW give us hope in our darkness. PAUL expresses our divisions within and across Faiths, suggesting that diversity is good; division is not so good. Despite darkness and division, we are called to be and to have light in the Church. Our Readings this week speak of a need to spread the ‘good news’ to all corners [those days, the known corners: ISAIAH and MAT-THEW] of the earth. PAUL reminds us that we all belong to Christ [not to man], to be light for all the corners of the earth. In MATTHEW’s Gospel today, Jesus calls the first four Apostles [Peter and Andrew; and then the Sons of Zebedee, James and John], and simply says “Follow Me.” Jesus did not explain to them why he called them, did not give them a request to think it over and get back to him ~ just two words, direct and decisive. A choice to act, perhaps, but still a command to follow. What if they said “NO” = not now, I’ll get back to you, I need to finish what I am doing here first and have to talk it over with my family. Christ had no back up plan, no 2nd choice of invites, no alterna-tive group to call. God invites us ALL, from all corners of the earth; His invitation, our choice to RSVP. And one more point. The areas of the middle east mentioned in MATTHEW and in ISAIAH are all rather prosperous regions for their day and time. In fact, the first four fishermen that Jesus calls were, say scholars, rather prosperous [e.g., Zebedee was wealthy since he owned more than one fishing boat, had hired hands and sailors to work them]. Jesus calls us all every day to FOLLOW HIM more closely. In each call we let something go in order to accept and follow; our precious agenda, some precious free time, control, our self-interests, our fear of getting involved ~ our ex-cuses. This winter, this year – answer the Call with a YES and preach the Gospel to all corners of the globe. It is what we are called to do ~ no excuses.

Fr. Paul’s Homily

Mystery of Love 1 Jn 4:7-10; Mk 6:34-44

(“Whoever is without love,” faith or no faith, “does not know God, for God is love.”)

11

“Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.”

This reading from the First Letter of John zeros in on a very important truth that God is love and love is the foundation of everything that exists. Since God is love and God is the creator of all contingencies, everything created is from God, everything is coming from love. And St. Paul points out that the three great virtues, which really are from God, which are divine-like virtues: “faith, hope, and love, the greatest is love,” and yet oddly Christians have often forgotten this.

This is because of the great importance that St. Paul places on faith, especially in his two letters: Romans and Galatians. Now at that time Paul was dealing with the Jewish religion and the Jewish way of life. Judaism is actually all very explainable; it’s actually rational. The Torah is rational; it makes perfect sense. It makes perfect sense to prohibit certain things and to promote certain things, and that’s what the Torah did.

However when we come to Christ and moreover the cross, our power to explain flounders. We are introduced into what Christians call mystery. That is, we participate in this level of reality without really being able to explain or comprehend it in a developed way. Therefore there is now a gap between

the practice of Judaism, which St. Paul was very familiar with and which is very rational, and now something that goes beyond reason, which is the world of mystery and, in a way, darkness. Kierkegaard talked about a leap into the dark. Well, in a way, yes, especially when you are talking about the cross. So Judaism expected a Messiah, but never one that would die on a cross. Why? Well I can’t say; no one could ever say. People pretend they make explanations, but they don’t work. It’s a mystery why God’s involvement in our lives included the suffering, torment, and death on a cross.

Thus St. Paul says something more than mere obedience is needed. One needs this leap, and not only that, but he implies, and already at work is this idea that there’s something really wrong with humanity that the Torah can’t heal. Paul reasons in Galatians that if the Torah could heal, if it could bring salvation, then the cross would be superfluous. So there’s something deep, deeply wrong with humanity that called for this remedy, because Jesus himself described his blood as being poured out for forgiveness. So something deep has to be forgiven, not just the infractions of law, but something else. And to relate to God, who is now giving this remedy, who is now sharing his own existence with

our suffering and mortality, that requires this leap of faith. So faith is important in a way that Judaism never quite understood, nor does any other religion. Every religion requires some kind of faith. If you are Muslim, you have to believe Gabriel talked to Mohammad. If you are Buddhist, you have to believe that the Buddha was enlightened. But if you are a Christian, it’s something else. This is a belief in what you can never understand, this belief in mystery.

However the mystery is the mystery of love, and that’s why love is still the primary focus or should be. However, misunderstanding St. Paul, Thomas Aquinas said that we are justified by our faith, which he took to be belief in the propositions of the Creed, intellectual assent of the articles of faith. That is not what St. Paul meant. Martin Luther said faith means basically believing the Bible, but that isn’t what St. Paul meant either. Both of them arrive at a conclusion that faith is what’s really important. Well of course neither denied the importance of love, but they didn’t focus on it quite as the very essence of discipleship and Christian life, but it is. And that’s what John is saying here. “Whoever is without love,” faith or no faith, “does not know God, for God is love.”
