Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
A while ago, a friend of mine confided that she and her husband had to refuse a family wedding invitation because the couple had invited some 300 people to the event. That was an obvious disregard for the government’s official limits on crowd size in a world with Covid 19. Such callous defiance put the health and safety of the invitees in certain danger of contamination with the probability of them becoming spreaders of the contagion. The whole matter, just one of many such examples, remains largely inexplicable to me. That is, if you overlook the stubbornness rooted in some people or their culpable ignorance.
We hear Our Lord’s timeless parable of the wedding feast today, coming as it does on the heels of the one about irresponsible vineyard tenants last weekend. Intangible riches, represented by fine food and drink, can be squandered irresponsibly with all variety of lame excuses.
We note that Jesus tells the story in what you might call “three acts.” First, there are the two different calls to the proper guests on the king’s list. Then follows the call to the “outcasts,” whom we might describe today as “marginal people.” Finally, there is the king’s dreadful sorting out of the people at the banquet. In that last act, the fate of the person caught without a “wedding garment,” the clothes representing an authentic Christian lifestyle full of good deeds.
All in all, the lesson intended comes at us afresh. Shortly we will declare in our Creed that we believe “in one baptism.” The banquet here represents a heaven of indescribable delights, beginning with seeing God “as He is.” It makes any refusal on our part to come properly “dressed” to be the height of ill manners and foolishness. Why even flirt with the consequence of being “bound and cast out” in a hell of our own making?
The way we come to a special affair like this reflects our opinion of it and reveals the true spirit in which we come. If we go to visit at a friend’s home, we don’t go in the clothes we wear to paint the house or weed the garden. It is plainly a matter of respect that we should present ourselves in our friend’s house as best we can.
The more important garments for entering the king’s hall are those of the heart and soul—the garment of humility, the garment of faith, and the garment of reverence. They display for all the world what we think of God’s invitation. They honor all that God’s Son taught us about “how to dress.”
Our present earthbound lives are God’s gift to us. Where we wind up in the future is largely up to us. We have to keep our invitation to heaven in a very safe place. I believe it’s only prudent that we take the time, while we can, to build the best wardrobe for our future whereabouts. Meanwhile we have time to repent, reform, and renew ourselves. Speaking of time I can’t help but agree with how someone powerfully described time. He or she called it “a seamstress specializing in alterations.” Think about it! God love you, and give you His peace!

Parish Theme for 2020-2021 – In recent years we have decided on a Parish theme for the year that can help guide some of our reflections and programs. After discussion with the Parish Pastoral Council, the theme for 2020-2021 will be: “Rejoice in hope; endure in affliction; persevere in prayer.” The theme is responsive to the circumstances of our time as we encounter the effects of the coronavirus and social unrest. We are called to live in hope, to patiently bear trials, and to turn to God always in fervent prayer. Special Disaster Fund Collection This Weekend – The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has asked dioceses throughout the country to take up a collection in order that the USCCB would be able to help Churches needing aid because of the recent hurricanes and storms, as well as the wildfires in California. Baskets specially marked for this collection are in the vestibule of the Church in order that you may assist this charitable effort. Your generosity will be of much assistance to the people suffering from these disasters. School Advisory Board – The Board will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7:00 pm in the Annex. Voter Guide of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference – The Voter Guide of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference has been inserted in this week’s bulletin. This insert is provided by the PCC to assist you in forming your conscience regarding the upcoming elections. Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive – Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is hosting an online and drop-off Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive. This annual food drive helps to stock the shelves of NDS’ network of over 50 food cupboards throughout the Greater Philadelphia region to benefit those who do not have access to sufficient nutritious sustenance. This effort is especially critical during these times. Those interested in helping can support NDS’ Community Food Program by purchasing peanut butter and jelly items online through You Give Goods at https://yougivegoods.com/ndspbj. All goods donated now through Oct. 23 will be distributed to the NDS food cupboards. You also have the option of dropping off peanut butter and jelly donations for NDS in the boxes in the vestibule of Church. The boxes will be there until Monday, October 19. The Knights of Columbus’ Coats 4 Kids 2020 – The St. Margaret’s Knights of Columbus Council is launching its second annual “Coats 4 Kids 2020” campaign. It will run from October 15 to November 1. Last year’s campaign was a big success due to the overwhelming generosity of the St. Margaret’s community. We collected over $2500. Every year the Knights of Columbus purchases over $2 million of kids’ coats so councils like ours can buy high-quality coats from the national organization at very low prices. We want to surpass last year’s collection and ask you to consider purchasing multiple coats: 4 coats for a $200 donation, or 2 coats for $100 donation. The need this year is greater than ever. The coats will be donated to families through Mercy Ministries in Philadelphia. Please help us serve needy children. You can make your donation after Mass on Sundays October 18 and 25, or send it to the rectory. Annual Census and Fall Collection – Thank you to all those who have returned the census form and made a donation to our Fall Collection. If you have not yet responded, please consider making a donation to this important Parish Collection and returning the census form so that our records can be accurate. Thank you for your assistance.
Church Teaching: Relationship of the Mass to Eucharistic Adoration and Care for the Poor – The Second Vatican Council led the Church to a fuller understanding of the relationship between the presence of the Lord in the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist and in the reserved Sacrament, and the Christian responsibility to feed the hungry and to care for the poor. As the baptized grow to understand their active participation in the Eucharist, they will be drawn to spend more time in quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle, and be impelled to live out their relationship in active charity. In reverent prayer before the reserved Eucharist, the faithful give praise and thanksgiving to Christ for the priceless gift of redemption and for the spiritual food that sustains them in their daily lives. Here they learn the right and the responsibility to join the offering of their own lives to the perfect sacrifice of Christ during the Mass and are led to a greater recognition of Christ in themselves and in others, especially in the poor and needy. (from a Church document on sacred art and architecture)
Spiritual Thought – “I know of no better way of establishing the kingdom of God, Eternal Wisdom, than to unite vocal and mental prayer by saying the holy Rosary.” (St. Louis Marie de Montfort)

We are now one full month into school and we are so happy to have our students back in the building learning and growing. This school year has certainly been different but we are so proud of our Principal, Mrs. Johnston, Faculty, Staff and Families who have helped make this transition smooth. This summer, in preparation for our students returning to in-person learning, we purchased air purifiers, partitions, hand-washing stations, water-bottle filling stations and desk shields for the classrooms. We also instituted a policy that each family would be required to complete a Health Declaration twice a week and we complete random daily temperature checks on students, faculty and staff. Mr. DiGiovanni worked hard to install new flooring in many of our classrooms and to build our new 1st grade classroom. Our teachers have done the real heavy lifting: preparing materials and lesson plans to engage students who are learning both in the classroom and virtually at home. Some additional changes we have made to ensure our students can remain socially distanced have been to welcome new staff members and for other staff members to step into new roles. The 1st, 3rd and 5th grades are now in two classrooms with Mrs. Amy Lazur, Mrs. Jennifer Hollowell and Ms. Maureen Arata leading those classrooms. In addition, there are several new faces at SMS who we are excited to have teaching our children: Mrs. Juanita Gaspari (Art Teacher) and Ms. Caroline Winterle (Kindergarten C Aide). Finally, we have brought on 4 new Academic Support staff members: Mrs. Beth Mirzai, Mrs. Linda O’Keefe, Mrs. Stephanie Seal and Mrs. Anne Marie Zanoni. We extend a warm welcome to all of our new families and students. We began the year under a Hybrid model and as of the week of October 12th, all grades will be back to in-school learning with the exception of any students whose families have chosen the all Virtual option. Despite the challenges we continue to face due to COVID-19, our goal has remained the same; to educate and nurture our students in a community that recognizes Christ as the center.
Welcome to our SMS Home and School Association: President – Stephanie Seal
Secretary- Meg Hill Treasurer – Shannon FitzGerald
Plans are underway for all the upcoming events and we look forward to a great year blended with both traditional and new ideas.
