Page 2 JUBILEE OF MERCY—THE HOMELESS

A PRAYER FOR THE HOMELESS

Help feed the body and soul of those that are less fortunate. Share in giving, to those without a home, a place to feel loved and welcomed for the holidays. The St. Dorothy Winter Shelter runs from Friday, December 16th, 2016 through Sunday, January 1st, 2017. Please help the Knights of Columbus of St. Louise de Marillac and St. Dorothy fill our clothing bou que for our guests.

We need your help! Please donate your slightly worn clothing to our shelter clothing bou que and help those less fortunate. New items needed are underwear and white socks. Miscellaneous items needed include: gloves, caps, blankets, duffle bags, back packs, flip flops, belts, purses, wallets, rain poncho’s and umbrellas.

Please place the items to donate in the church ves bule in the marked box or in the parish office in the marked box.

Bless the homeless, this day and everyday. Keep them from physical and emo onal harm. Fill their hearts with hope for the future and for today. Comfort the homeless as they walk their difficult paths. May I know that everyone, even me, can be homeless.

Bless the homeless with enough food to sustain them, with enough warmth to shield them from the elements, with the power to wrestle personal demons and win, with the will to go on, and build their lives again. May hope touch each homeless heart, spirit and life, let the kindness of others bring las ng benefits, bring freedom from addic on, illness and misery, open their humanity to include and embrace themselves.

Bless the homeless with self-acceptance and love, spark their imagina ons with belief in the future, bringing the possibility of a be er life, a safer life and a more secure life. Amen.

HOMELESS COALITION WINTER SHELTER

HOW SVDP ASSISTS THE HOMELESS From the incep on of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in 1833 in Paris, France our mission has been to assist the poor and seeing the face of Christ in those that we serve.

The St. Louise de Marillac conference of SVDP strives to meet this goal by reaching out throughout the area to serve the homeless and those in need.

Some of the ongoing services that we provide that serve the homeless include: • Monthly Brown Bag lunches to the homeless of Pomona • Bi-monthly assistance at the Loves and Fishes Interfaith

dinner program in Ontario • Assistance at the Winter Homeless Shelters at St. Dorothy

and the Pomona Amory • Weekly spring & summer “Dinners in the Park” in Pomona • Barbeque lunches at Skid Row in Los Angeles We have been able to provide these services only by the dedica on of our members, and especially by the con nuous commitment and prayers received from our parish family.

ADULT SPIRITUALITY AND ENRICHMENT Page 3

McKINLEY CHILDREN’S CENTER

During November all deceased family and friends are remembered. Envelopes for All Souls Day can be found in the pews of the church for those wishing to list their deceased loved ones for whom we will pray. Please return the envelopes in the regular collec on or bring to the Parish Office to assure those listed will be remembered in one Mass each day.

ADVENT RETREAT

During this season of remembrance, we at St. Louise wish to invite all to inscribe the names of departed loved ones in our special Book of Names of Our Faithful Departed.

This book, along with the Purgatorial Novena (All Souls) envelopes, will be placed out in the church.

OUR FAITHFUL DEPARTED

For the children in the care of McKinley Children’s Center, most have never celebrated a holiday or know what it is like to receive a gi from someone who cares. All of us can be that someone!

We have the names of over 250 children who requested gi cards in the amounts of $10 thru $20. The “ornaments” with the children’s names and requests will be on our “Christmas Giving” trees the weekend of December 3rd and 4th, a er all Masses. Because the gi cards are like cash, we ask that you return your gi s before Tuesday, December 13th to the Parish Center ONLY.

Open the Door to Christ is the theme for this years Parish Advent Retreat which will be given by Fr. Joseph McShane on Monday, December 12th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Church. The Advent retreat is a wonderful way for us to prepare for the birth of Jesus on Christmas day and how we can make our hearts ready to receive the Infant Christ into our hearts and home on Christmas Day.

THANKSGIVING DAY MASS The Thanksgiving Day Mass will be at 9:00 am on Thursday, November 24th. Please bring the bread and wine for your Thanksgiving meal to be blessed during Mass. There will be NO 6:20am or 8:00am Mass on Thanksgiving Day.

THANKSGIVING DAY DINNER The Thanksgiving Day Dinner is on Thursday, November 24th from 12 noon un l 4:00 pm. Please see the back of this bulle n for more informa on.

The Parish Offices will be closed on Thursday, November 24th

and Friday, November 25th

High schools are having their open houses beginning in November through January. The best way to know if a school is right for your family is to visit. This will give you an opportunity to meet the administrators and teachers and to give the parents and students a feel for the campus and to experience the atmosphere and the schools personality. Most open houses will have a brief presenta on by a counselor or school spokesperson with follow ups by the teachers. There is usually a ques on and answer period and possible demonstra ons from different departments located on campus. Tours of the classrooms are common so the poten al student can picture themselves there. Some mes fellow students are part of the presenta on and can give students a clear picture of what to expect. It is highly advantageous to take advantage of the this opportunity.

You are invited to tour the campus of our local Catholic High Schools. • Bishop Amat Open House Tuesday, November 29th at 6:30 pm Sunday, December 11th at 1:00 pm Thursday, January 5th, 2017 at 6:30 pm (626) 962-2495 • Damien High School Sunday, December 4th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm Wednesday, December 7th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm Contact Ka e Monday at (909) 596-1946 x273 • Pomona Catholic High School Sunday, January 15th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (909) 623-5297 • St. Lucy’s Priory High School Sunday, December 11th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm contact Ka e Rossi at (626) 253-9388

NEW BOOK CLUB SELECTION! Our current selec on is “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” by Jonas Jonasson. The humorous story is about Allan Karlsson who has lived a long and even ul life. He is currently in a nursing home with his 100th birthday approaching. There is a big celebra on planned for his birthday, which he wants no part of. The Mayor is going to be there, the press is going to be there so Allan decides to escape and climbs out his window wearing his bedroom slippers. He embarks on an adventure with criminals, several murders, a suit-case filled with cash and incompetent police. As the adventure unfolds we learn Allan had quite a colorful life himself sharing meals with Stalin, Churchill and Truman. He even helped to make the atom bomb. This is a charming story that is a fun read.

We will meet to discuss this book on Monday, November 28th at 6:30 pm in the Board Room. Please email us at: [email protected] or telephone Peggy Cornish (626) 331-3905 or Kathy Janicki (909) 816-1661 for addi onal informa on.

Bullying preven on starts at home From cyberbully-ing to name-calling and exclusion, bullying can affect people of every age, especially kids and teens in school. Their peers can be cruel, so it’s important to talk about how to handle bullies, especially before a situa on escalates. One way to stop the cycle of bullying in its tracks, is to teach kids to speak kindly to others and to treat everyone around them with respect. For more informa on, please visit h ps://www.faithandsafety.org/bullying.
