St. Joseph Parish The Vigil May 10th, 2020 ROONEY TUNES VATICAN OBSERVATORY: The days leading up to my father’s death, my sisters and their daughters helped my mother get the house ready for my father’s wake. In the midst of the house cleaning tsunami, my freshman school report card was uncovered! It showed that I had received an A+ in science and an ‘incomplete’ in religion. So now you have it. You’ve ended up with a pastor who couldn’t even pass high school religion class! All this me, I’ve been under the impression that sci- ence and math have been so far off my radar screen, that I hardly know they exist. However, I always try to make a point of reading anything wrien by the Jesuit Guy Consolmagno, director of the Vacan Observatory, which has been in existence since 1580. The Detroit nave, Bro. Guy, educated at U of D high school, and MIT was appointed director by Pope Francis in 2015. Bro. Guy believes in the need for science and religion to work alongside on another rather than as compeng ideologies. He said: ‘Religion needs science to keep it away from superson and keep it close to reality, to protect it from creaonism, which at the end of the day is a kind of paganism – it’s turning God into a na- ture god.” Recently I was reading an arcle in which he was reflecng on, among other topics, miracles and laws of astrophysicist: “Everything not forbidden is compulsory” and, “If it did hap- pen, it can happen.” He concluded the arcle: “The ulmate miracle is, of course, the event we celebrate at Easter. The glory of the Resur- recon is not that it violated science, but that it happened at all. The hope we share comes in- deed from the science that says, “If it did hap- pen, it can happen.” TIME OF UNCERTAINTY: All I can say to folks who ask is: “I don’t know!” There have been certain groups aempng to put pressure on the Archbishop to re-commence public Mass. He’s a wise man and won’t make any move which might endanger any of us. What are these people thinking? Most of miss Mass, but are we going to take the risk of pung people in danger? No! There are wiser people than me who are in leadership posions, I don’t always agree with them, but I’ll take my chances with them. PARISH SUPPORT: I would take this opportunity to thank those of you who connue to give fi- nancial support to the parish. Needless to say, even in the midst of the pandemic, bills sll need to be paid – as you well know. For those who prefer to make their offering online, you will find informaon about ‘Faith Direct’ in the bullen. For others, please mail to the parish office or use the drop safe in the sacristy. Keep in mind, the Elm St. entrance to church is open from 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. If you want con- fession, or need to talk, I’m available. Call the parish office: 734.676.9082 and leave a mes- sage. Mass is live-streamed every Tuesday at 11:00 am and Saturday evening at 4:30. A par- ish Rosary is prayed on Zoom, Sunday evening at 7:00. What’s ‘Zoom’? Ask one of the kids! I connue to try and live as normal a life as pos- sible. There have been mes when I’ve ques- oned my own thinking. I try to limit what I read or listen to about the virus, but at the same me, keep informed. I oſten worry if I’m doing the right thing? Am I being negligent or maybe a wee bit obsessive? I have to admit, that in the blink of an eye, I can fluctuate be- tween one or the other! Most days I manage to, as the man in black would sing, ‘walk the line’. I pray for you daily and ask that you keep me in your prayers. As Dame Julian of Norwich re- minds us: all will be well, and all manner of things will be well. God Bless. Stephen Rooney.

Ministry Saturday was supposed to occur in March. By the generosity of our parishioners, we collected enough money to buy no-sew blanket kits for children for both this event and for Vacation Bible Schools’ ser-vice project station. In the absence of these events, I sent a shout-out to all of the families at the school and faith formation programs to porch-pick-up these kits when the quarantine first happened. Look at the results, so far! We are still receiving these back to the office and will begin distributing them to organizations that help chil-dren this week!

Facebook group page:

I've received many emails from parents (and grandparents) for a place to find resources to help their families grow in their faith during this time. I put together a FB group called Faith Forming Resources for anyone in our parish/school/faith formation program that would be interested in these. This effort is being done with the input of many people, not just by me. Thank you to our catechists, school staff, and a few parishioners who have contributed to this effort. Please feel free to email your trusted resources to add to this effort. I'll be happy to review and post them. If you are interested in the Faith Formation Resources group please find the link here https://www.facebook.com/groups/249873266206075/

Remember our FF Student/School Student Mass Tuesday mornings at 11am on the Parish Facebook page, and then on our YouTube channel. Registration for the 2020-21 Faith Formation year has begun. For a registration packet, please send me an email. We welcome all new and existing families to register at this time. Dennae Petrlich, Director of Faith Formation [email protected]

6th Sunday of Easter Songsheet

Opening Song

1. All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! O burning sun with golden beam and silver moon with softer gleam, Sing your praises! Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! 2. O flowing water, pure and clear, make music for your Lord to hear. Sing your praises! Alleluia! O fire so masterful and bright, providing us with warmth and light, Sing your praises! Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alle-luia! 3. Let all things their Creator bless, and worship God in humbleness, sing your praises, Alleluia! Praise God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit Three in One! Sing your praises! Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alle-luia!

Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 66)

Let all the earth cry out, cry out to God with joy! (repeat)

Preparation of the Gifts:

1. Come down, O Love divine, seek now this soul of mine, and visit it with your own ardor glowing; O Com-forter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing. 2. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let your glori-ous light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; no soul can guess Love’s grace till it become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

Communion Song:

1. Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! His the scepter, his the throne. Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood: Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by his blood. 2. Alleluia! King eternal, You the Lord of lords we own; Alleluia! Born of Mary, Earth your footstool, heaven your throne. You within the veil have entered, robed in flesh, our great high priest; Here on earth both priest and victim in the eucharistic feast.

Closing Song:

1. Sing with all the saints in glory, sing the resurrection son! Death and sorrow, earth’s dark story, to the former days belong. All around the clouds are breaking. Soon the storms of time shall cease; in God’s like-ness we awaken, knowing everlasting peace. 2. Life eternal! O what wonders crowd on faith; what joy unknown, when amid earth’s closing thunders, saints shall stand before the throne! Oh, to enter that bright portal, see that glowing firmament, know with you, O God immortal, Jesus Christ whom you have sent!

May 17th SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Hope is nourishing Especially in these trying times, we may be tempted to dismiss hope as something akin to wishful thinking.

Yet hope is a theological virtue, along with faith and love. These

three put us into position for per-sonal union with God. Hope, in par-ticular, orients us perpetually in a

Godward direction no matter where life takes us. As Cistercian monk

Aelred of Rivaulx declared: “What is hope but food for the journey to support us in the miseries of this

life?” Cultivate hope by weeding out habits of negativity and cynicism.

Today's readings: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17; 1 Peter 3:15-18;

John 14:15-21 (55). “Always be ready to give an explana-

tion to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.”

May 18th MEMORIAL OF JOHN I, POPE, MAR-

TYR Lean on the Lord

Pope John I was frail when he was elected to the papacy in 523, and he did not survive imprisonment by a

heretical king. From permanent dis-abilities to occasional illness, from aging to chronic fatigue to wide-

spread viral infection, we all experi-ence physical weakness at some

point and know that it can feel like a prison. When we hit the limits of our bodies, our inner strength can wane too. At that time—and at any time—

lean on the Lord to carry you through.

Today's readings: Acts 16:11-15; John 15:26—16:4a

(291). “The Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to

me.” May 19th

EASTER WEEKDAY Always at our side and on our side When Jesus promised his disciples the Holy Spirit, he used an inter-esting word. He called their holy helper a “paraclete,” the Greek

word for advocate—literally “called to one’s side.” It was used in courts

of law to describe an intercessor or counselor. From the Book of Job, we

also know paraclete can mean “comforter.” What a rich, meaning-

ful name to give that Spirit who guides us still—by our side even

when we’re as clueless as can be. Today's readings:

Acts 16:22-34; John 16:5-11 (292). “If I do not go, the Advocate will not

come.” May 20th

MEMORIAL OF BERNARDINE OF SIENA, PRIEST

The best witness is a joyful heart Do you know of someone whose

energy and joy attracts followers of all kinds? Franciscan priest and theo-

logian Saint Bernadine of Siena (1380-1444), whose feast we cele-brate today, was one of those peo-

ple. He was a human dynamo whose preaching drew thousands of fans throughout Italy even as he chal-lenged them to practice voluntary poverty and denounced the sins of the day. His joyful eloquence de-

fined his ministry and was impossi-ble to ignore. Can you bring others

to God through a joyful spirit? Today's readings:

Acts 17:15, 22—18:1; John 16:12-15 (293).

“They were to seek God, yes . . . though he is not really far from any

one of us.” May 21st

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

This isn’t goodbye After listening to the nightly news, a friend recently (and understandably) gasped: “We need Jesus!” Most be-lievers would agree. Which is per-

haps why the Ascension doesn’t feel like an event we’re much inclined to celebrate. Jesus departs; this sounds like a terrible idea from every stand-

point except the truth—because Jesus promises to send us his Spirit as an indwelling presence. If we still feel like orphans, remember Jesus’ words: “I am with you always.” See Jesus all around: in word and sacra-

ment, in the assembly of faith, in the disadvantaged sister and brother.

Today's readings:

Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians 1:17-23; Matthew 28:16-20 (58).

“And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

May 22nd EASTER WEEKDAY

Identify escape routes During stressful times and increased family togetherness, such as global "stay-at-home" orders, domestic abuse increases. Special hotlines

and secret havens are set up to as-sist victims, and abusers are encour-aged to seek help as well. Saint Rita of Cascia, whose feast we celebrate today, was mentally and physically abused by her husband for years. In the Middle Ages, she had little re-course. She chose to respond with kindness, patience, and humility.

Her virtues did little to change her husband’s behavior, but she did her best to escape her situation, at least spiritually. With the many resources

available today, be aware of the signs of abuse and encourage loved ones to seek both physical and spir-

itual refuge. Today's readings:

Acts 18:9-18; John 16:20-23 (295). “No one will take your joy away

from you.” May 23rd

EASTER WEEKDAY Here’s to life

As we adjust to new ways of living, the Easter season offers much-

needed hope. Resurrection changes everything, not only in salvation his-

tory but also here and now. Life coming out of death. That is the

mystery of our faith, and the mys-tery of the world we live in. For eve-

ry story of greed and ineptitude, there are many more stories of gen-erosity and competence. Celebrate those victories. That is the life that

comes out of death. Today's readings:

Acts 18:23-28; John 16:23b-28 (296). “For the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and

have come to believe that I came from God.”
