THE LAST MEETING – 9/5/08 – ST. JOSEPH 35, MARSHALL 12 – DICKINSON STADIUM

(St. Joseph) – The Bears offense picked up right where it left off after last week's 34-0 victory over Harper Creek. St. Joe found the endzone on their first three possessions, which helped lead the Bears to a 35-12 win over Marshall on Friday night at Dickinson Stadium After the Bear defense forced Marshall to punt on their initial drive, the Bears went on a 9 play 75 yard drive, ending with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Sean Guinane to Jay Nimtz. The Bears defense gave the offense excellent field position after Matt Jewell intercepted the ball at the Marshall 20 yard line, the Bears would find the endzone again as Drake Smith scored a 3 yard touchdown to put the Bears up 14-0.

The Bears defense would come away with a fumble near midfield and just 2 plays later, Sean Guinane found Jay Nimtz for a 30 yard touchdown pass and a 21-0 lead. Marshall found the scoreboard late in the first half when Redhawks quarterback Jeff Lough scrambled for an 11 yard touchdown run, the point after was blocked and the Bears took a 21-6 lead into the locker room at halftime. St. Joe's defense helped set up the offense once again as Devonte Jones made an interception at the Marshall 27 yard line. Drake smith would run for 22 yards on the first play after the turnover, and then took it the last 5 yards on the next play for a 28-6 lead. In the fourth quarter, Jamaal Jackson scored his second touchdown of the season when he had a 15 yard touchdown run. THE BIG 16… NEWSWIRE ►Big 16 Realignment In the biggest move since the formation of the Big 16 back in 2001. The league’s realignment eliminates the Central Divisioin, moving Kalamazoo Loy Norrix, Portage Central, and Portage Northern to the West Division. Battle Creek Central and Kalamazoo Central are now in the East Division. The league’s realignment is for football only. The new scheduling matrix allows for the first two games of the season to be played against the other division, while the last seven games are divisional games. The rotation does allow for Kalamazoo Central and Loy Norrix to play every year despite being in opposite divisions. ►Big 16 Stadiums undergoing some facelifts. Following the 2008 season, Harper Creek stadium had both the home and visitors bleachers replaced. The scoreboard has been moved to the opposite side of the field, the playing surface is now the fourth Big 16 stadium to have artificial turf, and a new running track installed as well as 25-second clocks. However, one addition includes a third set of bleachers located in the south endzone, used for students and the marching band. Griffith Stadium at Kalamazoo Loy Norrix is also undergoing some upgrades. The upgrades being done include a brand new scoreboard as well as a completely new pressbox. The work is being done as part of an $86-million bond that passed in 2006. ►New Coaches on the sidelines Four new coaches will be patrolling the sidelines this season. Benton Harbor named Larry Jackson as the replacement for Maurice Burton, Burton spent two seasons as the Tigers head coach after back to back 0-9 seasons. Jackson spent the last three years as an assistant for St. Joseph. Jackson is a graduate of Michigan State University. Following the 2008 season Doug Paran stepped down as head coach of Mattawan, citing personal reasons. The former Lakeshore assistant spent four years as coach with a record of 17-21. Matt Stephens replaces Paran after holding the same position at Bangor High School. Stephens is a teacher in the Mattawan school system. Sturgis hired Bill Keim as their head coach after Greg Brooks stepped down after 5 seasons, compiling a record of 18-30. Keim has served as the Trojans JV coach in previous years, however they were not under Brooks. Coldwater’s Mark DeMeester ended his tenure as the head coach for the Cardinals, stepping down after three seasons with a 4-23 record. The Cardinals with 0-9 in his first year, followed by consecutive 2-7 seasons. Norm Moran who previously coached at Waldron, Vandercook Lake, Albion, and Concord was named the Cardinals’ head coach. ►Portage Central coach suspended for first four games following DUI arrest On the weekend before the first practice, Portage Central coach Brett Foerster was arrested and charged with DUI. Because of the arrest, the Portage School system has suspended him for four games including the week 3 rivalry game with Northern, he will return in week 5 against Loy Norrix. The first Dickinson Stadium In the mid 1940's the St. Joseph School system acquired the title to a 40 acre parcel of land known as the Dickinson Estate. The area is where the current high school now stands. Around that same time the citizens of St. Joseph recognized the need for a new athletic and recreation area. The St. Joe football team played their games at Wells field (where Jefferson elementary currently sits). There was no parking for the fans, except on the neighboring streets, and the wooden grandstands were in danger of collapse. It was then that the St. Joe residents got the ball rolling for a new facility. After receiving numerous recommendations by various experts, the planning committee, commissioned architect Robert V. Knox to develop the sketches and conceptual drawings of the stadium. The Board of Education would take these plans to the various service clubs around St. Joseph to rally the community involvement in the project, Every group that were presented the plans went on record as supporting it. The voters overwhelmingly passed the $170,000 bond proposal on July 25, 1949 for the new stadium and track. A little over a year later, on September 22, 1950, the original Dickinson Stadium opened. Dickinson Stadium held it's last event on October 19, 2001. In the 51 year history of the stadium it was the home to thousands of events, including football games, track meets, soccer games, band competitions, and commencement ceremonies.

The new Dickinson Stadium The idea for a new stadium came about when a commission was charged with reviewing and making recommendations on the future of the facilities of the St. Joseph Public School system for the next 30-40 years. After a review of the old stadium it was determined that to bring the stadium's aging and deteriorating steel support and infrastructure up to code would be a very expensive project. The commission visited newly constructed high schools around the Midwest and made recommendations for the St. Joe schools, including a new football stadium. In March of 2001 a plan for a bond proposal was presented to the St. Joe taxpayers, which not only included the new stadium, but also a new athletic fieldhouse and other various projects at the high school, and a new auxiliary gym, offices, library and orchestra room at Upton Middle School. The bond issue passed on September 25, 2001, less than a month later, the last game at the old Dickinson Stadium would be played and demolition would begin.

While construction continued during the 2002 football season the varsity team played their "Home" games at Lakeshore's Al Stockman Stadium, Benton Harbor's Filstrup Field and at Bridgman High School. Upton Middle School was the home site for the JV and Freshmen teams. The new stadium still has one feature from the old stadium, and that is the electronic scoreboard/message center that was installed prior to the 1998 season. The scoreboard was dismantled and moved from it's previous location to where it currently stands. The stadium now also has an 8 lane running track, the old stadium had 7 and only 6 were useable. The first games were played on Thursday, September 4th, by the Freshman and JV teams who gave the stadium it's first shakedown before the Grand Opening a week later. The official dedication was prior to the game between St. Joseph and Kalamazoo Central which St. Joe won 34-13.

Less than a year after the opening, the new Dickinson Stadium had the honor of hosting country music and TV star Reba McIntyre for a performance benefiting Harbor Habitat for Humanity, The concert was part of Reba's 2004 tour which was sponsored by Whirlpool Corporation. The concert was held in front of a sold out crowd of over 6,500 on July 20, 2004.

At the end of every season, the 8th grade team from Upton Middle School will play their last home game at Dickinson Stadium, which will become their new home field as Freshmen. Dickinson Stadium occasionally is the home field for Lake Michigan Catholic High School

PRESS CLIPPINGS… Herald Palladium –8/9/09 Never a dull moment St. Joseph’s Jackson keeps busy with three sports, job Ben Sanders – H-P Sports Writer Jamaal Jackson likes to stay busy. The three-sport standout at St. Joseph High School has had plenty to keep him busy this summer, juggling American Legion baseball, weightlifting, football camps, and wrestling tournaments – not to mention a summer job. His grueling schedule isn’t for everyone, but Jackson likes it. “I’m enjoying the summer,” Jackson said. “I hate it when I have down time. I get so bored. I love sports.” As a junior, Jackson rushed for 925 yards and 20 touchdowns for the St. Joseph football team, placed third in the Division 2 state wrestling tournament at 189 pounds, and led off and played left field for the Bears’ regional championship baseball team. The time he puts in during the summer has been a big reason for his success. “It helps me a lot,” Jackson said. “One of the best parts is I just feel more comfortable in my sports.” A typical summer day for Jackson would include a morning weightlifting session with the football team, followed by a full day at work and then a Legion baseball game. He also participated in several football camps and a 7-on-7 passing league, and the Northern Exposure wrestling tournament in St. Ignace. Are there times when it gets to be too much? “Absolutely,” Jackson said, “I’ve gotten banged up over the road. You’ve got to say focused an keep working hard.” As busy as he has been Jackson hasn’t even been able to compete in every event he has wanted to over the summer, as they often conflict. He said that football comes first, which isn’t surprising given his family background. His father Larry Jackson, played football for Michigan State and was an assistant coach at St. Joseph under Elliot Uzelac for the past three seasons before becoming head coach at Benton Harbor. “It helps a lot,” Jackson sais. “Coach Uzelac also knows a lot. It’s basically just double time. Coming home, you get that much extra from the home support.” Jackson also did office work with his mother Rhonda, at KMG Prestige, a property management company, through Michigan Works. He said the work was an enjoyable change of pace from all the sports.

Battle Creek Enquirer –8/9/09 Marshall looking forward to season Bill Broderick – The Enquirer Walking on the field on a visit to the Marshall football team, an assistant coach walks past me and instead of your normal greeting of ‘Hi’ or ‘How’s it going?’, instead I heard this. “We’re going to be darn good this year.” Now, he wasn’t making a prediction that Marshall would go undefeated, win a state title, or even beat its rivals Harper Creek or Lakeview. He was just saying, what seems to be the obvious around Marshall this year – expectations are high. Marshall coach Rich Hulkow, a veteran of more than 25 years, would never say, we’re going to be darn good, at least not to the sports editor with a notebook in his hand. But he does know a good team when he sees one. And when a team come to the realization, some time during training camp, that they have a real chance to be good – there is a different atmosphere on the field. “I don’t like to lie to the kids and build false hope, so I won’t tell them they are going to be good when they aren’t, but we expect to be good this year,” Hulkow said. “But I don’t think this is a surprise in our league. You can look at all the scouting reports from the other teams, you can see Marshall has a lot of kids back after a pretty successful season. So we want the kids to know that people think that we’re going to be good and they’re going to be gunning for us.” And you have to think, that kind of attitude is worth a few points on the scoreboard every Friday night. If a team is expected to be good and has a solid base of facts to back that up, then they enter every game they play with a certain swagger. Marshall’s base comes from a playoff season a year ago that had the Red Hawks advance to the third round, only to lose to eventual state finalist Detroit Country Day. Add the fact that they have seven or eight starters back on each side of the ball, and you can’t blame Marshall for showing some confidence as they plow through the remaining practices in the preseason training camp. “I like it when expectations are high. We went far last year and we have a lot coming back so we are a confident team,” Marshall’s James Wimberly said. “You don’t ever want to be too confident, but at the same time you want to show some confidence on the field.” Some coaches will never say they have a good team. Maybe it’s superstition, or maybe they don’t want to see bulletin board material used against them. But, a lot of coaches would rather have that problem, then look out on the field in the preseason and wonder where any wins will come from. “We have a lot of tried and true veterans so that always makes a head coach feel comfortable,” Hulkow said. “At least we aren’t looking at our team and going, ‘uh, oh’ – so that’s always a good thing.”

Herald Palladium – 8/26/09 Offensive line a concern at St. Joseph Bears coming off back-to-back undefeated regular seasons By AL AREND - H-P Sports Correspondent St. Joseph’s football team has enjoyed two straight undefeated regular seasons under coach Elliot Uzelac, but he returns just two offensive linemen that helped propel the past couple of campaigns. “Once we get healthy we feel we have the talent at the skill positions to produce another winner,” said Uzelac, 28-7 in his three years at the Bears’ helm. “But our offensive line is very inexperienced. How fast it develops is the key to our season.” Uzelac returns nine starters including four on offense and five on defense from last fall’s 10-1 squad which split two games with neighborhood rival Lakeshore, losing to the Lancers in the district champion ship. Starters back on offense include quarter back Sean Guinane (6-5, 217), tailback Ja maal Jackson (5-10, 192), tackle Derek Worley (6-4, 244) and tight end J Michael Carter (6-2, 212). All are seniors. Starters back on defense are senior cor nerback Devonte Jones (5-11, 148), senior safety Chrys Killebrew (6-0, 163), junior outside linebacker Tyler Curtis (6-1, 237), plus senior tackles Jason Gambrell (6-0, 195) and Andrew Keppler (6-1, 197). “We were making progress until we got a bunch of kids sick or hurt,” said Uzelac. “We held five starters out of our scrimmage last Friday,” including quarterback Guinane. Guinane is trying to recover from a viral infection, according to Uzelac. “If he can’t go Friday night, then junior Jeremy Rush (who guided the Bears’ junior varsity to a 7-2 record last fall) will start.” Starting at tailback in the Bears’ I-for mation is senior Jamaal Jackson (5-10, 192), who led St. Joe rushers last fall with over 1,000 yards. Killebrew is the backup. Junior Cory Erny was penciled in as the starting fullback, but was lost for the sea son due to a knee injury during a 7-on 7 camp at Notre Dame earlier this month. Curtis and junior Josh Akins will now split time at the position. The Bears have a bevy of talented wide receivers, according to Uzelac. They in clude Jones, senior Nick Piggee, juniors Joel

Bergman and Bobby Symonds and se nior Andrew Wheeler. Uzelac added Jones will only play about 50 percent of the time on offense. Besides returning starters tight end Cart er and tackle Worley, newcomers to the Bears offensive line include senior center Mike Siemans (195 pounds), guards junior Logan Moser (201) and senior Andrew Brown (193). Junior Kevin Millward (209) and Sam Kodis (262) are battling for the other tackle spot. Worley is currently nurs ing a badly sprained ankle. Defensively the Bears will remain in their 4-3 alignment. Down linemen include ends junior Adam Lalley (212) and Kepler, with seniors Valentino McCoy-Garcia (256), Gambrell or Jae Ellegood (151) at tackles. The secondary includes Jones and se nior Micah Schoeplein (143) at the corners with Rush and Killebrew at safeties. Schoeplein is also currently injured, but Killebrew can also play corner. If he does, senior Michael Case (171) will play safety. Carter, Jackson and junior Carter Nimtz (179) will rotate at two of the linebacker spots, and Curtis returns at the other. Uzelac said his other concern is the Bears’ inexperienced secondary as only the talented Jones returns. Curtis will handle punting duties with Josh Akins handling the place kicking. “Both are doing very well,” noted Uzelac. Uzelac feels Lakeshore is the team to beat in the expanded Southwestern Michi gan Athletic Conference West Division, but his Bears, Portage Central and Portage Northern could all vie for the title. “We need to win early while we’re im proving, like the ‘07 team did,” Uzelac said. “We have a tough opening assignment at Marshall which returns eight starters on offense and seven on defense (from an 8 4 team). We have to go in there and beat them. The first game is a huge test for us.” St. Joseph’s numbers remain solid as 55 are on the varsity roster.

2009 St. Joseph Bears Football St. Joseph at Marshall – 8/28/09 Page 21 of 22

Battle Creek Enquirer – 8/27/09 One thing is different and one things stays the same in the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference. In 2009, the SMAC will realign from three divisions to two eight-team divisions - giving the league a new look. But what remains the same, at least for the teams that used to be in the SMAC East, Jackson Lumen Christi still hasn't lost a game in division play since joining the league in 2006. So until someone can knock off the reigning champs, Lumen Christi has to be considered the team to beat. With the new alignment, the teams that will be trying to do that in the East Division, will be the five squads already in that group before the change - Marshall, Harper Creek, Lakeview, Coldwater and Sturgis - along with the schools that have shifted out of the Central - Battle Creek Central and Kalamazoo Central. "I like the new divisions - I think it makes more sense to have the two divisions," BCC coach Doug Bess said. "It won't be a big change, because we've played all these teams before. We just didn't play them all, every year, and now we will." The new format will have each team playing the seven other teams in the division, plus two cross-over games. MARSHALL Head coach: Rich Hulkow (26th year) Record in 2008: 8-4 Top returners: Jamar Wimberly (sr., RB/DB), James Wimberly (sr., WR/DE), Anthony Kramer (sr., WR/DB), Alex Greenwood (sr., WR/DB), Garrett Woods (sr., RB/T/DL) Cody Boughton (sr., RB/LB), Taylor Friend (sr., OL/LB), Dave Giese (sr., OL/DE), Brandon Myers (sr., OL/DE), Dan Giese (sr., OL/DL), Austin Zapata (sr., OL/DL) Outlook: Expectations are high at Marshall this season as the Redhawks are coming off an 8-4 season that saw them advance to the third round of the playoffs. Marshall has a lot of experience coming back from that team - starting with two brother combinations - Jamar and James Wimberly and Dan and Dave Giese. "Our expectations don't change. We expect to be good and we expect our kids to play at a high level. We have a lot of kids back from last year and a lot of starters. So we hope our high hopes are rewarded by good play," Hulkow said. Both Wimberly brothers have already been offered scholarships at Western Michigan University, so Marshall expects a big season out of them. The Giese brothers each start on both sides of the ball and made a big impact last year after transferring from Harper Creek a season ago. Beyond them, Marshall also returns its entire offensive line with Austin Zapata and Garrett Woods along with center Brandon Myers and tight ends Jake Herman and Kyle Waidelich. On defense, both Wimberly brothers return as starters as do the Giese brothers along with Cody Boughton, Woods, Taylor Friend and Andrew Feasel. "We feel good. We have a lot of tried and true veterans, a lot of skill, some added speed and with a lot of good players beyond those starters, we have good depth," Hulkow said.

POLLS/PREDICTIONS… Battle Creek Enquirer – 8/27/09 Marshall Redhawks are No. 1 Team begins season atop the E-10 rankings Everybody back. And twins. No this isn't some cheesy commercial with twin blondes, it's the cheesy E-10 rankings, where the Enquirer sports staff ranks the top prep football teams in the area regardless of size. And with not just one set of twins, but having twin twins (that was the cheesy part) is a good enough reason to make Marshall our No. 1 team in the preseason E-10 rankings for 2009. Marshall's roster is highlighted by the Wimberly twins -- Jamar and James -- and the Giese twins -- Dave and Dan. All four will start on both sides of the ball and the Wimberly twins are each getting recruited by Western Michigan University. The quartet of seniors (hey, where the did the twins go?), are part of core group of returners who all went to the third round of the playoffs last year. That experience left Marshall with high expectations for themselves, even before they found out what the Enquirer says. Marshall does have a tough schedule which opens this week with a St. Joseph team that went undefeated last year, and then there's perennial power Jackson Lumen Christi. So an undefeated record, which is the least we expect from our preseason E-10 No. 1 teams, will be a challenge. But we also rank these squads based on which teams would win if we lined them all up on opening day. And by that measure, we see Marshall as the top squad in the area. Herald Palladium – 8/27/09 Big Al's picks: 2 divisions of 8 - 'It's about time' By Al Arend / H-P columnist Finally, my favorite time of the year has arrived - opening night of the area high school football season. It's that time of the year when expectations of area players, coaches and fans are at their peak. You see, every team is undefeated right now. After Friday night that won't be the case. As most of you know by now, the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference (Big 16) has switched to two, eight-team divisions for football. As Lakeshore coach Denny Dock told me recently: "It's about time."

I highly concur. So which team is going to win the expanded West Division? It will come down to the triangle of games between St. Joseph, Lakeshore and Portage Central. Naturally, when asked, both Lakeshore's Dock and the St. Joseph coach Elliot Uzelac tabbed their "favorite" neighborhood rival as the division favorite. Those two wouldn't pick their own team to win it if they returned every starter from a 9-0 squad. But it's great that it's a real rivalry again. All I know is the Bears have tailback Jamaal Jackson, and the Lancers don't. But St. Joe could be without returning quarterback Sean Guinane for a couple weeks as he recovers from mononucleosis. Look for Benton Harbor to win some games this season after back-to-back 0-9 campaigns. Rumor has it first-year coach Larry Jackson's squad looked very respectable in its scrimmages last week. And, he has already weeded out those who don't want to work. Here are my picks for area conference champions and contenders. SMAC West Champion - St. Joseph; Runner-up - Lakeshore; Contender - Portage Central. On with the forecast: B.C. Central 20, Benton Harbor 14 St. Joseph 19, Marshall 13 Lakeshore 42, Sturgis 0 Niles 21, Coldwater 20 Al Arend is a sports correspondent for The Herald-Palladium. His football predictions appear weekly throughout the high school and collegiate seasons. Detroit Free Press – 8/23/09 21st - St. Joseph In 2008: 10-1. State playoff record: 12-12. Strength: defense. Top players: WR/CB Devonte Jones; RB Jamaal Jackson; QB Sean Guinane; TE Michael Carter; DL Jason Gambrell, junior LB Tyler Curtis. Outlook: There is not much experience back on offense, but in 2007, the Bears faced the same dilemma and advanced to the Division 3 state semifinals. If the line develops, St. Joe could have a truly balanced offense to go with a dynamite defense.
