NOTESHAVE YOU HERD?Despite a career performance of 23 points and 15 rebounds by senior center Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.), Marshall dropped its Conference USA opener to league newcomer Western Kentucky, 67-53, on Sunday at Cam Henderson Center. With the loss, the Herd suffered its first home defeat of the year (4-1) and snapped a two-game win streak, while the Lady Toppers extended their win streak to a conference-best nine games.

A HERD WIN WOULD...• Give Marshall its best record since 2011-

12 (9-3)• Tie the series with Old Dominion, 2-2• Bet the Herd’s first over the Lady Monarchs

since Feb. 1, 1974 (W, 41-34, at Radford Tournament)

• Be Marshall’s first against ODU in Norfolk• Be the Herd’s first on the road in conference

play since March 1, 2012 at UCF (W, 69-60)

EZEIGBO TOPS THE NATIONPer the NCAA National Rankings update through games of Sunday, Jan. 4, Marshall’s Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) leads the nation with a 69.7 field goal percentage (62-of-89). She holds a 14.3 percent margin atop Conference USA, with the next highest mark being 55.4 by Alexis Alexander of Charlotte.

CAN’T HOLD US DOWNMarshall is one of two Conference USA teams yet to register a losing streak this season, along with Old Dominion (8-4). The Herd is 3-0 in games following a loss this year.

ROAD WOESThe Herd is looking for its first win on the road in conference play since a March 1, 2012, defeat of UCF in Orlando, Fla. (69-60), as well as its first under coach Matt Daniel.

FROM DOWNTOWNThe Herd leads Conference USA with 6.9 made 3-pointers per game. Marshall has two players ranked in the league’s top-10: AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) tops the conference with 2.5 per game and McKenzie Akers (Princeton, W.Va.) is 10th with 1.8 per game.

SPREADING THE WEALTHFour players have led Marshall in scoring through 12 games this season. Leah Scott (Detroit) paces the team with six games, followed by AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) with three and Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.) and Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) with two games apiece.

GREAT SCOTT!The Herd has found a leader in senior Leah Scott (Detroit), who ranks No. 8 in Conference USA with a .504 field goal percentage. She tops the Herd with 14.7 points per outing. She was this season’s first Conference USA Player of the Week (Nov. 17) and was also named MVP of the URI Tip-Off (Nov. 15) and the Herd’s MVP of the Capital Classic (Dec. 20).

SOUNDING LIKE BROKEN RECORDSOne Conference USA record and three school records were broken in a 127-56 dismantling of Brescia on Dec. 22 at Cam Henderson Center. • 27 points (single-game school record,

previous – 126), Conference USA record, previous – 125)

• 14 threes (single-game school record, previous – 13)

• Seven 3-pointers by AJ Johnson (single-game school record, previous – six)

• Additionally, Johnson tied the single-game school record with 13 attempted threes

PLAYING THE ‘VICTRUM’Junior Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.) had a career performance when she went 5-of-6 (.833) from 3-point range against Maryland Eastern Shore (Nov. 22), matching the No. 2 single-game performance by a Marshall player in program history.

THREE IS A MAGIC NUMBERThe Herd’s three wins to open the 2014-15 campaign mark the first time Marshall has won three consecutive games under coach Matt Daniel. The three-game streak is also a first since the Herd won a five-game stretch from Dec. 28, 2011 through Jan. 11, 2012.

ROAD WARRIORSOf the first nine contests of the 2014-15 campaign, Marshall played seven away from Huntington. The Herd’s three-game road trip which ended on Dec. 6 is the longest since a stretch of six games from Nov. 23 to Dec. 8, 2012. During that stint, Marshall went 3-3 over two neutral site tournaments, the annual Capital Classic against West Virginia, and one true away contest at Southern Illinois. Later this season the Herd be away for a second stretch of three games, at Rice (Feb. 5, 2015), North Texas (Feb. 7) and Western Kentucky (Feb. 14).

SCOTT NAMED C-USA PLAYER OF THE WEEKAfter leading the Herd to a 2-0 start at the URI Tip-Off, Leah Scott (Detroit) was named the season’s first Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday. The honor is the first of her career, and a first for Marshall since Tynikki Crook won on Dec. 6, 2010. Scott, a 6-foot forward, is the eighth Herd player to earn the honor.

HERD LANDS TWO ON ALL-TOURNEY TEAMSeniors Leah Scott (Detroit) and Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) were selected to the URI Tip-Off All-Tournament Team after Marshall’s 2-0 weekend at Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I., on Nov. 15. The Herd was the only team with two or more players selected. Scott was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading Marshall with an 18.5 scoring average over the weekend, and matching her career high of eight made field goals against Fairfield (Nov. 15). Ezeigbo recorded the third double-double of her career against Rhode Island with 12 points and 10 rebounds (Nov. 14), and pulled down a game-high 13 boards against Fairfield.

2014-15 TRENDS

#MRSHvODU@HerdWBB 6

Matt Daniel, who quickly built a successful NCAA Division I women’s basketball program at CentralArkansas, was named head coach at Marshall University in May 2012 and enters his third season with the Thundering Herd.

At UCA, Daniel earned a reputation as a spirited and tireless young coach who displayed an ability to turn around a program. He is 81-71 for his career as a head coach and finished his final three seasons at UCA with a 66-26 record.

“My wife and I are ecstatic to be back in Huntington,” said Daniel. “I was recruited here as a player by coach (Billy) Donovan and I think that his style of play fits my style of play. We will play a style of basketball that is entertaining and fast paced. I think it’s more fun to coach, officiate, watch, and play against. We flipped the program at Central Arkansas into a championship program and a prominent program nationally. We will come and try to do the same at Marshall.”

Daniel, 36, replaces Royce Chadwick, who resigned in 2012 after 11 seasons at Marshall.

During his four years with the Sugar Bears, Daniel took UCA from Division II to the Division I level and guided a program that had two consecutive 20-loss seasons (2007-08 and 2008-09) to its first Division I conference championship (Southland Conference), two postseason tournaments (‘12 WNIT, ‘11 WBI) and three straight 21-win season. His teams had the best overall and conference records in the Southland Conference over the lastthree seasons.

Daniel’s recruiting ability has led to many of Central Arkansas’ recent successes. During the four years at UCA, he produced two Southland Players of the Year, a Southland Defensive Player of the Year and a Southland Freshman of the Year. Daniel also coached eight All-Conference selections, along with three first-team selections and three All-Academic honorees.

He was the 2010 and 2012 Southland Coach of the Year.

Under Daniel’s direction, women’s basketball attendances increased significantly at UCA. Eight of the top 10 crowds in UCA history came in the last five years. UCA led the Southland in attendance, while developing an intimidating home-court advantage that included a 21-3 home conference record in the last three years.

The Jonesboro, Ark. native has other coaching experience at the University of Missouri, the University of Colorado, and Texas-Arlington, where he was an assistant coach at each institution.

Daniel started coaching as a graduate assistant for men’s basketball at Arizona State and played collegiate basketball at Colorado and Harding (Ark.) University.

He is a 1998 graduate of Harding University and was Mr. Basketball in Arkansas in 1994. He was named MVP of the state tournament after taking Jonesboro High School to a state title in Arkansas’ highest classification.Daniel comes from a coaching family. His father, David, is a highly respected figure in Arkansas after having spent more than 30 years coaching both in the high school ranks and at Arkansas State University.

Daniel inherited a 2012 Marshall team that recorded its best overall record since 2008. The program returned a lot of experience, bringing back six of its top nine scorers and only lost three seniors to graduation. Ten of the 12 returners averaged seven minutes or more on the court each game. After having the best start to a season since 1986-87, the Herd ended the season with a 16-14 (7-9 Conference USA) record in 2011-12.

He and his wife, Dr. Jennifer Daniel, welcomed their firstborn daugther, Steele, in October 2012, and their second daughter, Bhrett, in July 2014.
