St John’s College Warden’s Report to Assembly

January 20, 2015

Since the October Assembly meeting was cancelled, this report covers all of the activities during the Fall Term. My impression was that I had an extremely busy Fall but much of that comes from three trips: a) to the University of West Texas in Lubbock, Texas to give a lecture on Inuit Art, October 2 to 4, b) to the Inuit Studies Conference in Quebec City on October 29 to 31, and c) to Durham, England for the Collegiate Way Conference November 17 to 26. The Fall Term also included our annual Convocation at the College. We awarded honorary degrees to the Venerable Douglas Fenton and Justice Thomas Berger. Unfortunately Justice Berger fell ill just before Convocation and was unable to attend. Many thank to our staff for managing the last minute change of plans. I was pleased with the significant turnout of students at our Convocation although we do need to work on attendance by the Fellows. As the College supported the University application to locate the National Research Centre for Truth and Reconciliation here, we are de facto a “Founding Partner”. I have been representing the College at the monthly partner meetings. I am also a member of the “Allies Group” for Indigenous Achievement. Thanks to the initiative of our Chaplain, Allison Chubb, we restarted the “Bible and Breakfast” series in collaboration with St Peter’s Church. Dr. Lisa Wray Beal gave our two fall programs. About 20 people attended the two events. I was present at both and led Morning Prayer. Other activities include:

1) Participating in a number of Homecoming events including: the Indigenous Achievement Luncheon, the Native Studies Department 40th anniversary, the Isbister Luncheon, Arts Celebrating Arts, Homecoming Dinner

2) Presided over College Matriculation 3) Attended the Saul Kanee lunch and lecture (by Justice Murray Sinclair) at St

Pauls’ College 4) Met with the planning groups for Visionary (Re)generation and the

landscaping of the North Precinct 5) Participated in the Scion interviews concerning residence needs 6) Attended Diocesan Synod 7) Represented the College at the University Fall Convocation where Chantal

Hebert received an honorary degree 8) Sat on a Faculty of Arts Promotion Committee 9) Attended the Blessing of the new facility for the National Research Centre for

Truth and Reconciliation 10) Chaired a doctoral defence

11) Attended the Bishop’s dinner 12) Met with the Multi-faith Chaplaincy advisor 13) Attended the Athena Leadership Awards presentation with Acqueline 14) Presided over the SJC Family Christmas Party 15) Attended the residence Christmas Banquet 16) Attended the Senior Executive Retreat 17) Led a workshop on Inuit perceptions of climate change at Fort Whyte I continue to represent the College at Senate, Arts Faculty Council, Provost’s Council, Diocesan Council, External Relations Deans’ Meetings, and the Instructional Space Management Advisory Committee. For my sins I am the acting Chair of the University of Manitoba Press Board.

Chaplain’s January Report to Council and Assembly, 2015

• Bible & Breakfast continues this month with John Stafford on the 31st and Jane Barter Moulaison (U of W) coming in mid March

• I hosted an alcohol awareness event for student leaders on Jan 9 with the Addictions Foundation of MB. It was poorly attended and poorly presented. I hosted a mental health movie night and discussion with our counselling intern and no one showed.

• I have ordered a portable canvas labyrinth through a special donation to chaplaincy programming. It will be used for a presentation with the Grad Students Association on Spiritual Wellness as well as in facilitation of meditation and aiding in exam stress. We may also be able to rent it out.

• Weekly meditation starts again next week. An occasional student attends. • Our counselling intern continues to meet a few students a week. • I will host student council this week for • I’m planning a volunteer day at Agape Table for Louis Riel day, along with the Social Chair on

student counsel • Eucharist continues the second Wednesday of the month, with midday prayer on all other

Wednesdays • Lessons & Carols was a lovely service in December, with about 50 in attendance, including

the choir • We did not host international students in Canadian homes over the break this Christmas

because no one was interested; there were fewer international students in residence than last year

• A couple of new initiatives are being attempted this semester in order to build community beyond my office: connecting with the children of clergy (we have about ten) and building relationships with our large Nigerian community of students

• I continue to work with Justin to provide programming and mentoring in the residence • I have begun working with Chris Trott to address the future of chaplaincy in the university as

a whole, working with some of the changes coming into effect

Bursar’s report to Assembly Jan 20, 2015

A brief report:

I have met with audio visual and classroom services, who have informed me that two more of our classrooms will be receiving technology upgrades in their next round of projects. These upgrades dramatically improve the ability to deliver course materials to students and we’re pleased this will be going ahead.

The replacement of the cloister roof is nearly complete. There is some flashing and finishing work that needs to still be done, but the majority of the work is done, and was presentable in time for convocation.

The Warden and I met with physical plant regarding the landscape architectural drawings for the college campus. Phase one will be the shared space between us and St Paul’s, with the rest to follow. Obviously subject to funding through the university.

Plans to replace the flooring in the galleria are underway, with the hope that the work will be done over the February reading week.

After a busy summer in food services and the residence, the 2014-15 budget is progressing and on track. Our residence is full, and food services has been busy and meeting budgeted targets. However, one thing we will need to be mindful of is a projected cut by the university next year. Adjustments and planning have already started with myself and the Warden. Spending will need to be curbed, and other items currently expensed through the university will need to be shifted to the college budget.

Dean of Residence Report to Assembly Residence Projects At the moment we have no major projects in the residence right now. We recently switched around a few of the common areas to utilize the space better and replaced the pool table. We also turned a common room that wasn’t used into a dons office so they have more privacy as well as it gives them a safe space to meet with students.

Regular Semester We are currently at capacity with a small waitlist of mostly ICM students. We had 4 students leave us in the fall due to dropping out of school or moving to different living accommodations. We have since filled the rooms with new applicants. IEP has 23 rooms contracted with us and we are starting to make plans for the summer session.

Residence Activity With the decrease in IEP numbers we have more students who are here for the full 8 month school year. This has led to a stronger community and our events have had larger turnouts. I’m hoping that this will have a positive impact on our recruiting efforts for September 2015. We are working closely with the residence student council to streamline our programming efforts.
