The aim of the project was for the students to learn more about Australia's military history. In completing their entry a team of 14 Yr.6 students each researched a significant battle of either WWI or WWII and their information was presented in a scrapbook. Students were encouraged to reflect upon their learning by contributing to a blog. As part of the project the team of students co-ordinated the creation of two reflective gardens. These gardens were dedicated as a memorial to the fallen and were opened by a serving member of the navy and a member of the RSL. Yesterday I had the pleasure of travelling to St. Francis of Assisi Primary School at Glendenning to listen to the Voice of Youth Cluster Final speeches. Mrs Moseley and Mrs Sultana also accompanied the Year 6 students to the event. Saige Horn won the final with her speech ’More Than anything...I want to be an Author’ and Tiya Boueiri won the Social Justice award with her speech ‘Just One Puff’. Both Saige and Tiya spoke very confidently in front of an audience of approximately 400 comprised of students, parents and teachers. Saige and Tiya can both be very proud of their efforts. Saige now progresses to the Regional Final at Seven Hills in September. Congratulations to our Year 6 students who were a wonderful audience for each of the eight speakers. Thank you to Mrs Moseley and Miss Kaempff for their preparation of the Year 6 students for this major event.

Penrith Eisteddfod Tomorrow the Junior and Senior Eisteddfod Choirs will compete in the Penrith Eisteddfod at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith. Both choirs have been beautifully prepared by Mrs Thoms and this was evident when the choirs performed at our last merit assembly. We wish both choirs good luck and we know the students will love singing to a large audience in a prestigious competition. Enjoy the experience!

New Seating New aluminium benches have been purchased for the multi-purpose room courtyard. The infants students will eat their lunch on these benches in damp weather. Of course, other grades will be welcome to use these benches for an outdoor learning activity and they will provide great seating for special assembly morning teas. I am hoping for delivery of the benches before the Fathers’ Day assembly and cuppa.

CHILD PROTECTION LEGISLATION REQUIREMENTS Child protection law require all volunteers and other visitors who may have direct unsupervised contact with children while completing tasks in or for Parramatta Catholic systemic schools to complete an online training module. After successfully completing the module, an email notification will be sent automatically to the volunteer’s email address and to the school email address. This email is a confirmation that the training has been successfully completed by the volunteer. Child protection for volunteers may be accessed through the following web address http://ceo-web.parra.catholic.edu.au/asp/ volunteerscpmodule/index.asp

COMMUNICATION ~ Staff value communica-tion with parents and welcome the opportunity to meet. If you wish to meet with a staff member please make an appointment through the office for a mutually convenient time.

SUPERVISION ~ Morning supervision from 8.30 am. I ask you to ensure that your child is not at school before 8.30 am as there is NO supervi-sion before this time. School finishes at 3.00pm and children should be picked up promptly. After-noon supervision in the amphitheatre finishes at 3.30pm.

MOBILE TELEPHONES ~ We request that no mobile phones be brought to school. If your child needs it for safety reasons e.g. walks home alone, please send a note to the classroom teacher. In such circumstances the phone will be handed to the teacher in the morning and returned at 3.00pm.

ANAPHYLAXIS

A LIFE THREATENING ALLERGY Throughout our school we have several children with life threatening allergies to various forms of food. This is a serious issue the school must address and we have implemented various management strategies to cater for these children.

In order for our school to continue to be allergy aware we ask that you con-sider not including nuts, eggs, yoghurt or foods cooked in peanut oil as part of your child’s recess or lunch. Thank you for considering the special health needs of these children.

PARENTS & FRIENDS NEWS

Chocolate Drive The annual Chocolate Drive is our major fundraising event for the year. Mr. Patchell supports our expectation that all families will participate in some way. The chocolates were sent home with the eldest child of the family in Week 3. The chocolates cost $1.00 each. There are 50 chocolates in each box = $50.00 to return as payment. For each box of chocolates sold, families will enter a draw to win a $50.00 Rebel Sports voucher. This also includes those families who opted to make a donation – 34 families donated to our fundraising, including a $30.00 donation from one generous family – thank you! Please return all money from chocolate sales NO LATER than Thursday 23rd August. If you are unable to sell all of your chocolates, please return the box to school, with payment and left over chocolates. If you sell out quickly, we have many extra boxes to sell, so please enquire at the school office.

If you do not return any unsold chocolates to school, we can only assume that you have sold the box and MUST RETURN a payment of $50.00. Thank you in advance for your support.

Fathers’ Day Stall – Friday August 31st The P & F will be hosting the annual Fathers’ Day Stall after recess on Friday 31st August. The committee have been busy packaging the gifts in preparation for the stall. This year we will be offering a range of packs with a mixed variety of goodies for dads! Some examples include:

Bottle opener + playing cards + dad magnet + pen

First aid kit + cd holder + air freshener + tyre gauge

Engraved torch + wet weather poncho + chocolates

Tool box + tape measure

Mugs + pen + chocolates

Clock pen caddy + key cover light

We also have a supply of gifts for Grandfathers this year.

There are many more items in the range. We have tried to group items thematically, depending on dad’s interests. We hope that the children will really enjoy choosing something special for dad, and that fathers will appreciate these small token gifts – all for just $7.00!

Thank you to the P & F committee who have spent days shopping, collating and packaging 400 gift bags. It’s a mammoth task for very little profit – the goal is to help dad have a fabulous Fathers’ Day. We would love to have a team of helpers to sell the gifts at the stall. Come to the Fathers’ Day Assembly, grab a cuppa in the break and head on up to the Shed to spend an hour at the stall! Any time you can spare will be much appreciated, from 11:30am.

Oscar & Samantha Transition Playgroup for Kindy 2013 – CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS! Thank you to a number of parents who heeded the call for volunteers for the Transition Playgroup Program. We could still make great use of more volunteers, as a number of parents helping with the program also have a child preparing for Kindergarten, so they are limited in their availability. We are looking for a team of volunteers to help with the program due to commence in Term 4. This year we will run the program on FRIDAYS from 9am – 11am. We are all busy; no one with a family to manage is ever idle during the day – but if you can squeeze a worthwhile cause into your Friday morning, we would love some extra helpers!

You don’t need experience; you won’t be required to create something from scratch – just assist with the tasks already designed. There are so many ways to enhance the program, but this can only be managed by the number of volunteers to lead small groups.

Please leave your expression of interest to help on our Facebook page or contact Linda Hogan 0430 511 373.

School Banking with CBA Banking will continue every Thursday. Don’t forget to fill out your deposit slip and enclose the money in the yellow plastic cover inside the velcro pockets.

It’s not too late to join – simply pop into your nearest CBA branch, complete with your child’s birth certificate and some photo I.D for yourself – and it is quick and easy to set up an account! For every new account that is established, the school earns $5.00; with weekly banking, the CBA will pay the school an additional 5% of each child’s bank deposit (up to the value of $10 per deposit). It’s a great scheme to help encourage our children to save and the school makes a little profit along the way.

Kiss & Drop Zone Mr Patchell wrote to Blacktown Council on 14/05 requesting assistance to change the parking restrictions along a section of Cameron Street to a Kiss and Drop Zone in the morning. This space will be between the staff driveway to their car park and the section of parking up to the Bus Zone on the school side of the street. It is intended to be a “No Parking” zone in the morning, which means people can stay with their car and let passengers out of the vehicle, but they cannot leave their car or stand idle for more than 2 minutes. It is hoped that this will keep traffic flowing efficiently in the morning and provide safe passage for the students to enter the school grounds.

A Council representative met with Mr Patchell at the end of last term to view the site. The application is now with council to be discussed in the coming week. We will keep you posted.

The Entertainment Book There are still a few Entertainment Books available for purchase until Friday August 31st. You can pick up your copy directly from the office with your $65.00 payment – or order online and the book will be forwarded to you.

Why not hop online to check out the value to be had by a small investment? www.entertainmentbook.com.au

Diary Date – Wednesday November 14: Ryan’s Toy Warehouse Shopping Event Please note in your diary that we will be selling tickets to attend a shopping night at Ryan’s Toy Warehouse for Wednesday 14th November. More information will follow in Term 4.

Staying In Touch We realise that it is difficult for many parents to attend P & F meetings and events due to their work commitments, inside and outside the home.

Now you can stay in touch with news and events, contribute your ideas and helpful contacts through our new “SJV Parents & Friends” page on Facebook!

If there are any last minute changes to the school calendar, you will find this information on our FB page. Mr Patchell will notify the P&F on Thursday afternoons to confirm Merit Assemblies or any special presentations to be made at the Friday assembly so that parents will know which year groups will be involved in any ad hoc assembly events. We hope our FB page will continue to grow in membership and be a useful direct means of communication with parents. If you have your own FB page, click on ours and “Like” us!

Next P & F Meeting: Friday September 7th at 2pm: Maths Workshop The P & F have asked Mr Patchell if the school could provide a “refresher” course for parents on the latest maths strategies used in classrooms. No doubt we have all heard of “number busting” and “maths kebabs”- but what does this really mean? Do we need a Uni Degree in Pure Mathematics to help our kids at home? Apparently not!

Please join us for this afternoon of maths support. Thanks in anticipation to Mr Patchell and Mrs Moseley for indulging our request for a Maths Workshop.

Check out the notice board in the “breezeway” next to the office for the latest P&F news!
