Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi in Latin). It is a special time to thank God for the gift of His Son Jesus in the Eucharist. Our parish is blessed to have Eucharistic Holy Hours each month in English and in Spanish, and overnight Eucharistic Adoration every First Friday of the year. Thousands of you receive Holy Communion each week at our Masses. Whether receiving the Sacred Host on the tongue or in the hand, and also receiving the Consecrated Wine, we fully share in the Sacramental Body and Blood of Christ. We respond “Amen” with reverence, and hopefully we dress appropriately for this Sacred Banquet.

A few months ago, a number of parishioners promised to contribute to the support of the Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary by offering to make donations of dollars per mile or one time gifts toward Fr. Manuel’s running in the New Jersey Marathon. We are pleased to announce that he finished 26 out of 2,000 runners, amazingly completing the marathon in just under 3 hours! If you would like to see some photos of the race, go to www.thenewjerseymarathon.com and search for Manuel Dueñas Bid #917.

Fr. Manuel and some of the seminarians will be outside church next weekend to receive your promised gifts. If you will not be here next weekend, you may mail a check payable to “Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary” and send it to:

Fr. Manuel Dueñas, Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary, 672 Passaic Ave., Kearny, NJ 07032

Thank you to all those who continue to make their pledges to our “We Are Living Stones” Capital Campaign. We are now at 70% of our goal of $1,066,452, with pledges totalling $704,186.00. Payments on pledges already total $163,901.34.

Based on the payments to date, we now have $35,950.67 coming back to us in October. This will help us to cover the costs of replacing the two heating/cooling units for Conlon Hall and the Church boiler, each project estimated at over $50,000.00. So, if you have not made a pledge, payable over four years, please consider doing so now. Pledges may be dropped off at the rectory, placed in the collection basket, or sent directly to the Archdiocese. I count on each family to make some contribution to our parish and our Archdiocese through this Campaign.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

In 2011, the English translation of the Mass changed, so that in Jesus’ words at the Last Supper he no longer said that his blood was poured out “for you and for all,” but rather “for you and for many.” Some people worried that we might no longer believe that Jesus shed his blood for all people, but only for a limited number. It is clear in today’s Gospel reading that the translation “for many” is more accurate. Nonetheless, it remains the teaching of the Church that Christ’s blood was shed for all. Indeed, we believe that the intention of Jesus’ words at the Last Supper was to show that God’s saving love was expansive, not limited.

In the reading from Exodus we see the source of Jesus’ language about the blood of the covenant: it refers to the blood of the sacrificed bulls that was sprinkled on the altar and on the people of Israel to seal their covenant with God. The Israelites were a small minority of the peoples of the world, yet God’s covenant was with them alone. When Jesus speaks at the Last Supper of his own blood as the blood of the covenant, he is expanding that covenant: no longer for the few who are Abraham’s descendants, it is now for the many whom he calls to be his disciples. This opening up of the covenant to the many through the blood of Jesus is so radical that the Letter to the Hebrews declares it a “new covenant.” So rather than restricting God’s love to a small group, Jesus’ words and actions show that that love is being offered to all. “Many” does not mean “not all,” but rather, “not only a few.”

“Lord Jesus Christ, through your Body and Blood you give to us the gift of your boundless love. Help us who have received this gift to share it with others. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Then he took a cup gave thanks, and gave it to them and they all drank from it.” Mark 14:23

Jesus, the perfect steward, gave thanks, just before He gave Himself to us completely for our salvation. He offers us the chance to drink from His cup. In the Eucharist, we meet Christ personally and, if we listen, we know what drinking from His cup means for each of us. Often, it means our own sacrifice—giving up some of our time, talent, and treasure to do His work on earth.

Grand Prize Awarded to Yashaan Hafizka 7th Grader takes honors at BergenSciChallenge

Yashann Hafizka, a 7th grade Transfiguration student was awarded one of five Grand Prizes for his Science Project at the Bergen “SciChallenge”, sponsored by Bergen County Academies. Approximately 70 Middle School students competed in the Science Fair. Yashaan’s project was an expanded version of the project he developed for the Transfiguration Science Fair held earlier in the month and involved alternative energy. Specifically, he converted Mud into enough energy to power an LED light. By being one of the Grand Prize winners, he is now eligible to apply for the BroadCom MASTERS competition in which 30 students are chosen to present their research projects and compete in hands-on challenges to demonstrate their critical thinking and communications skills. Transfiguration still holds an annual Science Fair and developed an engineering and technology curriculum which we consider to be an integral part of our STEM initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and which serves to develop such skills in all our students. We congratulate Yashaan and his Transfiguration teachers. Sal Tralongo, Pricipal
