Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On this Valentine’s Day weekend, we observe World Marriage Day. Catholic Christian Marriage is a blessed Sacrament which brings grace each day to the husband and wife, to help them be faithful in their responsibilities to God, each other, and their family. We offer a blessing at all our Masses to all married couples, and especially celebrate those which have flourished for 50 years or more. Contact Sue Gangemi at the rectory to register for special (5th, 25th, & 50th) anniversary Masses at the Cathedral later this Spring.

+++

Next weekend Fr. Paul Farin of Cross Catholic Outreach will be visiting our parish to speak at all the Masses on behalf of the poor in developing countries. Cross Catholic Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America.

+++

There are so many ways God is made visible in the world around us. For instance, the Archdiocese promotes several events to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. These include the Men’s and Women’s Commissions, Stewardship Day, in addition to parish-based programs such as Disciples in Mission, Cornerstone, and Why Catholic. These and other means of spreading the Gospel are enabled in part because of YOUR generosity to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Won’t you please take a moment to fill out a pledge form in the church or the rectory? Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

Parishioner Pledges as of February 8, 2014: $72,820.00

Reflection on Today’s Readings

The gospel of Jesus is a gospel of grace. The new law that Jesus gives is not a written code, but is the Holy Spirit who works within us to transform us into God’s children, adopted into God’s family not because of our own merits but rather out of God’s abundant love. This does not mean that the gospel of Jesus places no demands on us. As today’s passage makes clear, if anything, the new law of Christ is more stringent in its demands than the law of Moses. It calls not simply for outward conformity, but rather for an inward transformation in which we are conformed to God’s Spirit, who, as Paul says in the second reading, scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.

We all know that it is much easier to go through the motions and grudgingly obey a rule than it is to truly grasp the reason for the rule and let it become part of the fabric of our lives. A child might simply follow a rule to avoid punishment or to obtain a reward, but with maturity and life experience comes an appreciation for the reason behind the rule. The new law requires the hard work of inner transformation, by which we grow into the wisdom and spiritual maturity of which Paul speaks.

The hard work that the new law of Jesus asks of us does not make it any less a gospel of grace, for what Jesus ultimately asks is that we let his Spirit work with us. Our task is to get out of the way and let the Spirit guide us.

“Holy God, send us the Spirit of wisdom, so that we may grow into a spiritual maturity that will enable us to live the demands of the gospel. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Mt 5:20

The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear—it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner in the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

Catholic education: Does it still make a difference? Information taken from the National Catholic Reporter, Article Details by Mary Gautier Does Catholic schooling make a difference in the way Catholics practice their faith and in their attitudes about the Church? The data from a survey conducted by the National Catholic Reporter shows that at least in terms of the way Catholics practice their faith, attending a Catholic high school makes a difference. When asked about why they attend Mass, Catholic schooling also makes a difference. Attending a Catholic school also makes a difference in some aspects of Catholic Identity. Six in 10 who attended a Catholic elementary school, and seven in 10 of those who attended a Catholic high school, say they would never leave the Church, less than half of those without Catholic schooling said the same. Catholics who attended a Catholic school agree that being Catholic is a very important part of who they are and strongly agree that it is important to them that younger generations of their family grow up Catholic. The survey also found that for minorities there is a strong association between Catholic schooling and socioeconomic success.

Does Catholic Education Make a Difference? We think so. What do you think?
