The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. — Luke 4:18a

THE WORD OF GOD IN OUR LIVES: The word of God is very important and it is recorded in the Bible. In Greek, the word “Bible” means “Book”. The Bible is God’s book. It is the Book of books. This Book has the words of everlasting life. It contains the plan of God to save mankind, from the Old Testament to the New Testament. As one person (I don’t know who) made an acronym of it: Basic Information Before Leaving Ear th. This might be a humorous way, but it contains the truth. The Blessed Virgin Mary in Medjugorje asks us to read the Bible every day, to put it in a visible place and read it to our young children. Mary added that we should put the Bible in a visible place, so that we may not forget it. Sadly we often read to our children or grandchildren stories of Harry Potter, the Lightning Thief… these books may be interesting but they cannot match the Bible stories. The Nativity Story our children play every year is very meaningful and helps to build their/our faith. July 25, 2013: “Dear children! With joy in my heart I call all of you to live your faith and to witness it with your heart and by your example in every way. Decide, little children, to be far from sin and temptation and may there be joy and love for holiness in your hearts. I love you, little children, and accompany you with my intercession before the Most High. Thank you for having responded to my call.” Dear Parishioners, this message from Our Heavenly Mother is simple in the way: no strong words used, no philosophical complications at all. But they are full of great love, deep love, a sympathy that reaches everyone’s heart. Most importantly, they are not contradicting the Bible. Dear children: Jesus calls all of us His brothers and sisters, and then we are all the children of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I call all of you to live your faith and to witness it with your heart and by your example: Practice makes perfect. Actions speak louder than words. We need to live our faith and act on it. We need to feed the hungry, to walk for life, to condemn abortion, and all sinful behavior that are accepted in this country even though they are against God’s law. Never excuse yourself for choosing evil when you know it. Prepare yourself always for the last judgment. Decide to be far from sin and temptation: Never put yourself in harm’s way. You may fall and never recover. The devil is working with high steam, the reason more to be careful. Yes we are all attracted to sin, but we have to avoid it at any cost. It is your decision to make. There is joy and love for holiness in your hearts: true joy and true holiness comes only from getting close to God by doing what is right (His will). “I love you, little children”: “If you knew how much I love you, you would cry for joy” said the Blessed Virgin Mary in Medjugorje. I was blessed to feel this love in Medjugorje in 2011. I wish I could explain it but words are very limited. “I accompany you with my intercession before the Most High”: Mary is not God; day and night she kneels in front of her Son interceding for us. She is very closer to us than we are closer to ourselves. ….continued next column….

….continued….The first reading the Word of God is read to the people who are crying because they are deeply touched. They decided to put God’s words into practice by their Amen. So should we. The second reading reminds us that we are members of the Body of Christ and so we should fulfill our duties and responsibilities in the Church. Please, dear Parishioners, do not hide your talent. In the Gospel, St. Luke, one of the evangelists, wrote accurately about the life of Jesus. Let us strive to know Him and do whatever He asks us to do. God bless, Father Bernardin MUGABO

TIME - The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel, it will be “a year acceptable to the Lord.” And Jesus surely didn’t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the “arrival” of God’s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God’s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, “Today is holy . . . do not be sad, and do not weep.” The “year acceptable to the Lord” is this year. The day that is “holy” is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God’s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God’s word.
