FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! Congratulations to all who are being confirmed this weekend by Bishop Callahan! I’m especially grateful to Dan Kitzhaber and Deb Mlsna for all their hard work in preparing these students so that they can both receive and share the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Please pray that our students become even more visible in our parishes and our community. Sadly, some will treat Confirmation as the end of their religious training – we must pray for them most of all, so that our disappointment will never turn into judgment. And speaking of judgment, the most volatile of all the moral issues these days is without a doubt same-sex attraction. Recently I attended a meeting that featured the chaplain of Courage, which is a Catholic group for men and women with same-sex attraction who want to live according to God’s way of love (you can learn more about Courage at couragerc.org). It was a very inspiring and enlightening event, and one of the best components was watching a new video titled “Desire of the Everlasting Hills”. Sometime I would like to show this movie in the Columbia room because it does an amazing job of helping us to love the humanity of those who experience same-sex attraction. Moreover, it shows a better way to respond to the situation than secular culture’s “do whatever you want – it’s your life”. Given that we’re entering a political season, the debate about so-called same-sex marriage will only become more volatile. Rather than allowing it to cause us angst, I hope every time the topic comes up we will say a prayer for those who have same-sex attraction. My prayer for each person is that he/she realizes that we are all children of God and that we are so much more than just our sexual orientation. Okay, now to some of the questions I found recently in our trusty question box... first up is a question about Medjugorje. Since 1981 the Blessed Virgin Mary ostensibly has been communicating through apparitions and locutions to six people in Medjugorje. I visited that little town in Bosnia and found it to be a powerful and beautiful spiritual experience. However, the Vatican has made no pronouncement on its authenticity because the apparitions have not yet ended. I understand that the Vatican has been studying the case and will make a determination when the time is right (I suspect this will be in my lifetime, but it may not be anytime soon). In the meantime, a person is free to visit Medjugorje and many who have return again and again because of the beautiful graces they receive. The bottom line is that the Church will make the right judgment when the time is right – if the Church determines that the devil has been up to his tricks and thereby condemns the apparition, we will stay away. However, if the Church finds that it is of God, it will quickly become a Marian apparition site as popular as Lourdes and Fatima. Another question asked about the Catholic Church’s teaching about a person’s ashes after cremation. They should always be interred in the ground, preferably with a priest or deacon present to say the committal prayers and bless the ground with Holy Water. If you know someone who still has their loved one’s ashes in their home, encourage them to lay their loved one to rest – it’s best for both the deceased and the living. Someone asked about why priests no longer wear what would appear to be a wedding ring (symbolizing their marriage to the Church). Some still do, but it’s always been a matter of personal piety and preference. There is one more question but it will have to wait until next week. Please pray for our farmers this week, as Rural Life Day is being celebrated by Bishop Callahan in Loyal. May God stir up the zeal of the Holy Spirit in each of us, that we may bring His purifying fire to all people! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

Estate & Nursing Home Planning: Free seminar presented by Attorney David Eckert on Sept. 25th at the Central City Credit Union. This informative program is beneficial to all regardless of age or assets.

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN Donor fatigue: I’ll be writing a bulletin column about this phenomenon soon. What should we do when it feels like we’re being asked too often to give, even when the cause is a commendable one? I realize we have a lot of things going on in our parishes and it has been rightly pointed out to me that it may be too much at times. Please tune in the weekend of Oct. 18th-19th for my longer response to what we can do about what many have termed “donor fatigue”. Baptism Class for those requesting the baptism of their children will take place Tuesday, October 7th, 5:30-8:00pm in the Columbia Room. Pre-registration is required and you can do so by calling 715-384-9565 ext 2. For those not registered in the parish, information will be given on how to do so. This class is for all parents of their first child and/or those who have not yet taken Father Martin’s Baptismal class. Holy Land Pilgrimage Update: One of the most effective ways to better know a person is to visit his home. Would you like to visit Jesus' earthly home? As St. John Paul II famously said, "The future starts today, not tomorrow." I will not be leading another trip to the Holy Land during my time in Marshfield and Spencer - and though the trip is already over half full, there are about 20 spots remaining. I am confident that God will protect us (statistics show that you're safer as an American in the Holy Land than you are in Chicago) and that the graces we will receive will be a gift to all who cannot travel. Please pray and ask God if He would like you to visit the home of His Only-Begotten Son. Then sign up soon - the trip closes at the end of Sept. Questions? Please call me at 715-650-7893.

Holy Smokes! The 2nd Annual Pig Roast and Gun Raffle is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21st at 5:00pm at the KC Hall. Cost is $10/ticket or $40/family within the same household. Please join us for a fun evening that includes bucket raffles, 50/50 raffles and card raffles throughout the night. Pig Roast Silent Auction: Once again we will have a silent auction as well as bucket raffles. We will be in need of items of a $50.00 or more value for the silent auction and smaller items for the bucket raffles. If you would like to donate to the silent auction, please contact Jill Hiller at 715-305-6068. Thank you! Rural Life Day On Wed. Sept. 24th, the Diocese will hold the 34th annual Rural Life Day by St. Anthony’s parish in Loyal. The event will be held on the farm of Allan and Connie Walter. Pro-Life Minute Fact: Patients have been know to recover after a diagnosis of “brain death” and the “persistent vegetative state.” When a loved one is seriously incapacitated by injury or illness, it can be challenging. But the dignity of all human life requires that we never cause the death of a living person.
