Dear Parishioners, You are good people. You are people of faith who are once again facing the news of more abuse and the unconsciona-ble manner in which the abuse was handled. Undoubtedly, the revelations of past misconduct will continued to be brought into the light over the future months and perhaps years. The Catholic Church carries a heavy burden of guilt and betrayal due to the failures of individuals and the systemat-ic cover ups by its leaders. Many of you are filled with feel-ings of shame and horror as each week we learn of more horrible acts by priests and their superiors. In times like these we must be careful not to over spiritual-ize or compartmentalize these despicable events. Even well-intentioned spirituality cannot remove us from heart-wrenching tragedy that is before us. However, even with this in mind, we need to remain hope-ful. It is only with hope that we can bring about renewal and systematic transformation. Hope breaks through the darkness and leads us to discover the presence of Christ in a broken world. In this context, I present to you this past year’s Annual Re-port for Fiscal Year 2017-2018, found on page 9. These continuing unfolding events in the church, coupled with the uncertainty that we face in the present political and cultural climate, weigh us down to new lows. We can't escape these realities which make people pause or outright reject the parish and its mission. When people turn away from the church and their faith, which is very understandable, the parish as a body becomes stagnant and even falls behind our desired goals. At St. John Brebeuf Parish we are not trying to minimize or run from these realities. Instead, we try each day to deepen our belief that the mystery of God's love is active and alive in so many ways in this local community. Sin and evil are real but so, too, are love and mercy which many of you exemplify each day as you go about your ministry here in the parish and in your daily lives. Please review the annual report. The time, talents, and treasures that you continue to provide bring hope and new life to so many. You are each messengers of God's risen life. Let's continue to journey together, building community, serving and praying for one another, transforming our bro-ken world and church. May God Bless you and all your loved ones. Father Mike Meany

Drodzy Parafianie, Jesteście dobrymi ludźmi. Jesteście ludźmi wiary, którzy ponownie stają w obliczu wieści o większej skali nadużyć i niewłaściwym sposobie traktowania nieletnich. Niewątpliwie przeszłe wykroczenia, które wyszły na jaw będą nadal ujawni-ane w nadchodzących miesiącach i latach. Kościół katolicki dźwiga ciężkie poczucie winy i zdrady z powodu niepowodzeń jednostek i systematycznego ukrywania ich przez liderów. Wielu z was jest napełnionych poczuciem wstydu i horroru, ponieważ każdego tygodnia dowiadujemy się o bardziej przerażających działaniach księży i ich przełożonych. W takich czasach musimy uważać, aby nie uduchawiać ani nie segregować tych nikczemnych wydarzeń. Nawet duchowość o dobrej intencji nie może usunąć nas z tragedii, która jest przed nami. Jednak nawet mając to na uwadze, musimy pozostać pełni nad-ziei. Tylko z nadzieją możemy doprowadzić do odnowienia i systematycznej transformacji. Nadzieja przerywa ciemność i prowadzi nas do odkrycia obecności Chrystusa w zepsutym świecie. W tym kontekście przedstawiam Wam roczny raport za rok budżetowy 2017-2018. Te nieprzerwane wydarzenia w Kościele połączone z niepewnością, z którą mamy do czynienia w obec-nym klimacie politycznym i kulturowym, są dla nas nowym ciężarem. Nie możemy uciec od tych rzeczywistości, które powodują, że ludzie wstrzymują lub wprost odrzucają parafię i jej misję. Kiedy ludzie odwracają się od Kościoła i swojej wiary, co jest bardzo zrozumiałe, parafia jako ciało popada w stagnację, niejako nie radzi sobie z wyznaczonymi celami. W parafii św. Jana Brebeuf nie próbujemy minimalizować ani uciekać od tych rzeczywistości. Zamiast tego każdego dnia staramy się pogłębić przekonanie, że tajemnica Bożej miłości jest aktywna i żywa na tak wiele sposobów w tej lokalnej społeczności. Grzech i zło są prawdziwe, ale także i miłość i miłosierdzie, którego Wy jestescie przykładem każdego dnia w waszej posłudze w parafii i w waszym codziennym życiu. Przejrzyj roczny raport. Czas, talenty i skarby, które nadal dostarczacie, dają nadzieję i nowe życie dla tak wielu. Wy jest-eście posłańcami Bożego zmartwychwstałego życia. Our “My Stewardship Story” series continues. Thanks to Bob & Joan Czerlanis for sharing their story. We hope it will inspire you to consider your own stewardship activities!

Our Stewardship Story by Joan and Bob Czerlanis

We have been members of St. John Brebeuf for 51 years, since 1967. Our 3 children received their sacraments here and attended SJB School. We attended weekly Mass, prayerful and inspiring Christmas and Easter litur-gies, and participated in opportunities for adoration and rosary devotions. Sunday Mass fulfilled our duty to give thanks to God and to worship Him. The invitation to join various ministries gave us the opportunity to serve others and meet new people. We give our time and strengths to help build the body of Christ -- our Church. We support its needs for financial aid as a duty and privilege, knowing that God can never be outdone in generosity. We made many baby steps as we increased our faith through participation in the parish’s ministries: Joy in Jesus, Catholic Women's Club, GLADD, Ministry of Care, Weekly Marian Prayer Group, Adoration Chapel, and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Working with "Uncle Pete" Zonsius through the St. Vincent de Paul Society was a particularly moving experi-ence for us. He nourished his soul with daily Mass and lived the words of the Gospel by feeding, clothing, and assisting those in need. He even invited us to join SVdP. What a gift he was to us. Our encouragement to others is that it all begins with faith and prayer. We are all like tiny mustard seeds. Be humble. We need encouragement and ways to grow as a child of God. St. John Brebeuf Parish offers the sac-raments and many ministries inviting us to join and serve others. The rewards are personal and spiritual and can help transform us to be the saints that we are called to be.

The Annual Report for the Fiscal Year 2017-2018

Fr. Meany’s overview: Thank you for your sacrificial support of St John Brebeuf Parish. This Annual Report for the fiscal year 2017 gives us a “snapshot,” a “glimpse,” of what we have accom-plished together through the grace of God. Looking to the future, last February 2017, we embarked on establishing six priorities – Welcoming, Liturgy, Reli-gious Education, Service, Stewardship, and Technology. Look at the details in this bulletin for a follow up on these pastoral priorities. The SJB school faculty and staff is constantly looking to enhance its approach to ensure each child grows not only academically but also spiritually and emotionally as dis-ciples of Christ. Our SJB Religious Education Program for students in the public school has made gains in deep-ening its religious instruction. Both of these endeavors are our number one priorities and are central to our mis-sion. The Annual Financial Statement of the fiscal year July 1, 2017- June 30, 2018 is included in today’s report. The Sunday and Holy Day offertory income primarily financ-es our day-to-day operations. Our level of giving has fall-en 4.3% or $52,858.13, which is something to be con-cerned about. We have tried to reduce expenditures even though costs continue to rise, 2.4%, or $40,000.00, pri-marily cost of living expenses for staffing. We are very concerned about the fact that our cash on hand was very low this past spring due to low cash reserves. The other financial issue that we must address is that we do not have a sufficient budget for capital repairs and ongoing maintenance of our aging facilities. Our school last year increased tuition collection and re-duced costs due in part to staff retirements for a $59,776.75 savings, which brings the parish support from $282,618.28 in financial year 2017 to $222,841.28 this past year. Unfortunately, this reduction will be short lived as this year our enrollment numbers are projected to be lower than expected. The bottom line is that we are fortunate to be holding our own but need to reach out to new families, focus on our six priorities and raise revenue for present and future cost of living increases. Dziękuję za ofiarne wsparcie parafii św. Jana Brebeuf. Ten raport roczny za rok podatkowy 2017 daje nam "migawkę", "spojrzenie" tego, co razem osiągnęliśmy dzięki łasce Bo-ga. Patrząc w przyszłość, w lutym 2017 r., Rozpoczęliśmy us-talanie sześciu priorytetów: Powitanie, Liturgia, Edukacja religijna, Służba, Szafarstwo i Technologia. Przyjrzyj się szczegółom w tym biuletynie, aby dowiedzieć się więcej o tych duszpasterskich priorytetach. Jest-eśmy bardzo zaniepokojeni faktem, że nasza gotówka w kasie była bardzo niska na wiosnę z powodu niskich rezerw gotówkowych. Inną kwestią finansową, którą musimy rozwiązać, jest to, że nie dysponujemy wystarczającym budżetem na naprawy kapitałowe i bieżące utrzymanie naszych starzejących się obiektów. Nasza szkoła w ubiegłym roku zwiększyła czesne i ob-niżyła koszty, częściowo z powodu wieku emerytalnego pracowników z oszczędności w wysokości 59.776,75 USD, co daje wsparcie parafii z 286.618,28 USD w roku fi-nansowym 2017 do 222.841,28 USD w ubiegłym roku. Niestety, ta redukcja będzie krótkotrwała, ponieważ w tym roku nasze liczby rejestracji są niższe niż oczekiwano. Annual Report Knights of Columbus The St. John Brebeuf Knights of Columbus council has provided financial support for the SJB GLADD pro-gram, financial support for seminarians, donations of win-ter coats for kids to the Niles Food Pantry, Free Throw Contest for Boys and Girls ages 9-14, and fundraising to support various charitable endeavors like the Wheelchair Foundation through special events like our Pig Roast, Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day parties. Parish Pastoral Council In 2017 to 2018 the PPC updated the Parish Mission State-ment and began laying the groundwork for the Blanket project. Society of St. Vincent de Paul The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) sponsors the Annual Christmas Gift Program to distribute over 700 gifts to our local families and to various Catholic Parishes and organizations. Each month they provide 250 bag lunches for the Fraternite Notre Dame Sisters' soup kitchen. Addi-tionally, when they have enough help they provide a hot meal for the Sisters' soup kitchen serving about 200 meals. SVDP also sends out Easter and Christmas cards, and de-livers plants to those who have lost a spouse during the past year. They have 2 clothing drives each year (May and October). Music Ministry This year, the Music Ministry prepared for the Polish Lan-guage Children’s Choir to begin in Fall 2018. This new choir was added to an already vibrant music program: the adult choirs, the Cantate Deo Women’s Ensemble, Lifeteen Choir, and three other children’s choirs the Glo-ria Choir for grades 3-4, the Laudate Choir for grades 5-8, and the Religious Education choir for all grades. In addi-tion, the music ministry continues to work with cantors and with instrumentalists as part of the liturgy. Holy Name Men’s Club Holy Name Men’s Club continues to be a central force in both service and social life of the parish. The annual St. John Brebeuf Carnival in July provided a midway of carni-val rides, stage full of musical performances, raffle, and the always successful Pancake Breakfast. The club also hosts regular bingo throughout the year, and offers parish-ioners opportunities to get together for sports events, the annual golf outing, Lenten fish fry, and many other activi-ties during the year.


Religious Education The parish Religious Education program continues to pro-vide quality faith instruction and sacramental preparation to children of our parish under the direction of Pastoral Asso-ciate Maciek Karaban. During the 2017-2018 school year, 237 students participated in the program with an additional group in Joy in Jesus Sunday program for preschoolers. Thanks to the efforts of the Religious Education staff, our parish saw 92 First Eucharists among youth and 55 Confir-mations of youth. The Totus Tuus program returned during the summer, providing a one-week Summer Catechetical program. The sessions were a daycamp for students in grades 1-6 and an evening program for students in grades 7-12. The program was very well received, and was made available at a reason-able cost so that families could afford to enroll multiple children. St. John Brebeuf School In FY 2017, the school welcomed Dr. Mary Maloney as new principal. The 261 students and 18 staff have thrived under her leadership, with multiple new initiatives in areas such as curriculum, technology, and assessment. Test scores continue to be well above the national average as compared to all students and at or above the levels of stu-dents in other Catholic schools. The school implemented a model of Response to Intervention (RtI) where we have increased the use of data to guide and monitor our instructional program. Students and their families also continue in faith develop-ment with weekly Mass for all students, monthly Family Mass for all families, and a rigorous program of religious education. The school’s major fundraiser, the Gala, was successful in 2017. The Sheila Harrington Award at Gala was given to long-time parishioner and athletic director Dan Kosiba. The school’s inaugural Apostle Award was given to teacher Sandie Beierwaltes, and the inaugural parish Apostle Award was given to Religious Education teacher Jill Schmidt. Funds were raised toward a playground for the school, and in fall 2018 the plans were approved by the Archdiocese of Chicago and we await details about installa-tion. Plans for the 25th Annual Gala on November 3, 2018, are well underway. The Sheila Harrington Award in 2018 will be given to Mel and Shirley Koenigs, the Parish Apostle Award to Religious Education teacher Bettie Sevcik, and the School Apostle Award to Rebecca Giannelli. The school also led several other fundraisers.


Youth Ministry Our Youth Ministry program surveyed teens and sought to implement changes. The Notre Dame Litur-gical Ensemble played at the Life Teen Mass in Janu-ary, “Alive In You” summer camp musician Steven Joubert performed a concert in February, and partici-pants enjoyed the Overnight Lenten Retreat in March. In June, Fr. Przemek celebrated a special youth-only Mass in Flanagan Hall. The program continues to reach out to teens and their parents, with a regular schedule of Open Rooms and Life Teen Masses. Youth Minister Pam Perez retired at the end of Sep-tember, 2018, and an energetic group of parent volun-teers and youth participants are joining Fr. Przemek and Seminarian Mitchell Dietrich in guiding the pro-gram until a new Youth Minister is hired. Scouts Cub/Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are active within SJB Parish, with troops representing parish children from early grades through junior high. As always, our troops underwent changes in leadership this year, with new parents taking up the reins as older boys and girls moved on to other experiences. Whether learning through camping and trips, or through the experiences of raising money and helping others, our parish is positively impacted by the Scouts programs. Our par-ish supports the Scout program in many ways, includ-ing during regular, monthly Scout Masses during the school year. Parish Safety and Emergency Plans In December, our parish shared detailed information about the parish’s safety and emergency plans. Fr. Meany personally met with the Niles Police Chief, and a detailed emergency plan is on file with authori-ties and in the school and parish offices. In addition, in August 2018 members of the parish staff met with a representative from the Niles Police Department to discuss future collaboration. Details and reminders about the safety and emergency plan are included in the bulletin to maintain awareness throughout the year. Catholic Women’s Club (CWC) The CWC of SJB welcomes women of all generations to participate in the CWC, which has 141 members. Our mission is spiritual renewal, fundraising for the parish, and social events throughout the year. The women’s club has had many events, such as Interna-tional Night, St. Joseph Table, Christmas Dinner Shows, Catholic Woman of the year. We meet on the second Tuesday of the Month. The Catholic Women’s Club donated $3,000 to our parish.

GLADD Giving Love Apostolate of the Developmentally Disabled (GLADD) prepared for its 49th year in fall 2018. New this year was a commissioning celebration for all catechists and leaders, held in September 2018. The program has 91 active volunteer catechists, and hosts sessions on Saturdays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The program serves approximately 100 children and young people with developmental disabilities, and it pro-vides one-on-one guidance and support so that participants can experience the joy of the Eucharist as well as other Sacramen-tal instruction. The parish hosts a monthly GLADD Mass, which is specially adapted to the needs of the participants and their families. Our parish is also blessed to have several active altar servers who have participated in the GLADD program. Parish Physical Improvements The concrete in front of the church and the school, Flanagan Hall, was replaced, and special structures were installed to in-crease the security in front of the school. A portion of the school roof was replaced. Painting, landscaping, and repairs of our structures continue to take place as needed, thanks to the diligent work of our parish maintenance staff. Structural analysis has been done of parish facilities, with two major areas of concern: the church tower and the parish park-ing lots. The structure of the church tower is deteriorating, partly due to age. The parking lots are also showing signs of deterioration, due to constant use and inclement weather. In June, Fr. Meany and Deacon Andy Beierwaltes met with pa-rishioners to share these concerns and ask for financial support to make these needed repairs. The efforts to raise the funds are ongoing. In addition, the parish continues to explore ways to fund other improvements, including increased lighting and ac-cess to the school’s south entrance which is used by multiple programs. VIRTUS Program St. John Brebeuf parish and school maintain rigorous commit-ment toward creating a safe environment for children and vul-nerable adults on the SJB campus. Parish volunteers, leaders, parents, and staff are all required to participate in the VIRTUS program, including background checks, trainings, online train-ing bulletins, acknowledgement of the Code of Conduct, and DCFS CANTS screenings. Our parish and school staff work in close communication with the Archdiocese of Chicago Office of Protection of Children and Youth in an effort to maintain the highest possible compliance with VIRTUS guidelines. Online Giving In April 2018, our parish signed a 15-month agreement with GiveCentral to enhance our online giving program. We are working diligently with their staff to increase the number of parishioners enrolled in online giving.
