Dear Parishioners, We live in troubling times! The ancient Jewish people knew what it was to be in trouble and need God's help. The early Christians knew what it was to be in trouble and need God's help. And so do we. But's God's help comes on God's schedule, not simply on command. The prophet Isaiah spoke at a time when the Jewish leaders had been carried away from their homes into exile after disobeying God. But Isaiah told them that they had learned the necessary lesson from their exile, and now God was coming to lead them home as a shepherd leads a beloved flock. The Christians of Saint Peter's time suffered persecu-tion, including being thrown to the lions, so they were impatient for Christ's return. So Peter assured them: God is coming, but be patient; God will come on his own time as unexpectedly as a thief, but with the pow-er of a mighty roar, greater than any lion in the Roman Coliseum. For us the trouble often comes from within, from our own decisions. In the New Year, I invite you to look at how we can change the injustices of our world. Please reflect on your own daily lives and then atone for your past mis-takes. Sometimes we grow impatient with ourselves and with the problems that seem so unresolvable. We pray for God's grace, which is freely given to the wor-thy and unworthy – an efficient grace that helps us persevere and not lose hope amidst the troubles we face each day. Happy New Year! Father Mike Meany

Drodzy Parafianie, Żyjemy w trudnych czasach! Starożytni Żydzi wiedzieli, co to znaczy mieć kłopoty i potrzebowali Bożej pomocy. Pierwsi chrześcijanie wiedzieli, co to znaczy mieć kłopoty i potrzebowali pomocy Boga. My też.

The feast day of Sto. Niño in Tondo is celebrated in the third Sunday of January. The fiesta in Tondo has the biggest participation in Manila, in the Philippines, not only because Tondo is the most populous district in the city and poorest but perhaps because of the many tales con-nected with the Sto. Niño of Tondo. According to Philippine Historical Commission, the peo-ples of Tondo celebrated the feast day with a procession that “attracted thousands of visitors.” The parish in Tondo houses the image that was brought to the country by Augustinian priests from Acapulco, Mexico, in the late 1570s.

SJB Children’s Liturgy of the Word

All parents, please encourage your children to join when the clergy invites them to come for-ward to hear the good news of the Lord. We welcome all of our children ages 6-10 to participate!

Starting on the weekend of January 4-5, we are again asking our parishioners to participate in this special fund-raiser to help women in crisis pregnancies by supporting the pro-life work of the Catholic-run Women's Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Baby bottles will be found in main entrances of the church for you to take home and fill with spare change. Any checks should be made out directly to The Women's Centers. Over the prior 14 years our parish has already raised over $254,000 which helped to save 250 babies, who are now living out their lives amongst us. Many of them in turn will have chil-dren of their own. Continuing in the spirit of Christmas, let our parishioners of all ages, in-cluding the children, work together to save even more little lives. Please return the bottles before any of the masses on the weekend of February 1-2. Please take one bottle per family. Extras will be available in the back of the church the next couple of weekends if you fill up your first one. Thank you for participating in this worthy cause.

Holy Mary’s Jewels

Klejnoty Matki Najświętszej. St. Queen Jadwiga Society’s members and Ladies

from Our Parish’s Rosary Group celebrated Immaculate Conception.

All attended Holy Mass on Dec. 2nd. at 8:30 a.m. and stayed for the rosary service in the church

chapel. Afterwards, they had a delicious breakfast.

Wish you were there!

Children’s Bulletins

Don’t forget to pick up a bulletin for your children before mass, they can be found in the back of the church. Children, feel free to use the bulletin to color during mass and take home with you. We hope your family experiences Jesus!

Sister Agnes Walsh, a Daughter of Charity, is remembered for her heroism in France during World War II. In 1943, when France was occupied by German Nazis, the search for Jews be-gan. In the face of grave peril, Sister Agnes convinced her mother superior to open their convent and offer refuge to a Jewish fami-ly. The sisters did the right, but very challenging, thing when many would have told them to take the easy way out.

Most of us won’t face the extreme circumstances these women faced, but we all have our own challenges. What do I do if my boss gives me a task I believe is wrong? How do I make ethical decisions about medical treatment in times of serious illness?

In the life of following Jesus Christ, both great heroes and ordi-nary saints alike need the same thing: a well-formed conscience. What is conscience?

God creates us with a capacity to know and love him, and we have a natural desire to seek the truth about him. Fortunately, we don’t search for God unaided; indeed, he calls us to himself and writes his law on our hearts to help us draw closer to him.

Conscience helps us hear the voice of God; it helps us recog-nize the truth about God and the truth about how we ought to live. Conscience is “a judgment of reason” by which we deter-mine whether an action is right or wrong.

Jesus told the apostles, “If you love me, you will keep my com-mandments” (John 14:15). We deepen our relationship with God by following him, and in doing so, we become more fully our-selves.

Importance of a Well-Formed Conscience

Have you ever made a decision that turned out badly, but if you had more information beforehand, you would have made a better decision? Sometimes, we may have the best of intentions to do good, but choose an action that is, in itself, wrong.

For example, think of learning a new language. We can only speak with the language we have, and if we have not received good education in vocabulary and grammar, we will communi-cate poorly, and others will not understand us. It is similar with conscience.

If our conscience isn’t well-formed, we aren’t well-equipped to determine right from wrong. All of us have the personal responsi-bility to align our consciences with the truth so that, when we are faced with the challenges of daily life, our consciences can help guide us well.

How to Form Our Consciences Wherever we are on our journey with Christ, we can grow

deeper with him by continuing the work of forming our con-sciences well, so that we may follow him ever more closely. Alt-hough not a complete list, these suggestions can help us as we seek to inform and strengthen our consciences with God’s truth.

Pray Through prayer and participation in the sacraments, especially Confession and the Eucharist, we encounter the living God. Spending time with the Lord, such as in silent adoration, opens our hearts to him. In drawing closer to the Lord, we allow God’s grace to conform our minds and hearts to Christ, so that we might better discern in every moment how we ought to act.

Learn Without a foundational, practical formation, it is difficult for

our consciences to guide us well in concrete situations. As Catho-lics, we have the immense gift of the teaching authority of the Catholic Church and can turn to it for help forming our con-sciences. For example, learning about Christian moral principles, reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church, or researching what the Church says about a challenging teaching will help us grow in knowledge of the truth. In turn, this helps us understand a little more how to live in a way that leads to our true happiness.

Reflect We are formed by the stories we hear and tell. We may be uncer-tain how we ought to respond to various challenges as followers of Jesus, but there are many saints who have faced similar ques-tions throughout the ages. Immersing ourselves in the stories of holy women and men can encourage us and help us develop hab-its of mind that allow us to grow. Stories help us hone our in-stincts.

Nurture friendships A life of following Jesus is exceedingly difficult without help from a community. When we devote energy to holy friendships with people who are also trying to know, love, and serve the Lord, we gain partners who can lighten the load. Conversation with other Christians about how to respond to challenges in the life of discipleship are vital. Two Challenges

A couple challenges we may face in following our consciences are worth noting.

Indifference

When we are bombarded with news, images, stories, and sound bites, it’s easy to become numb to other people and the world around us. Conscience requires us to be attentive. We must listen to God, who speaks to us. Having a well-formed conscience doesn’t mean we have all the answers to the complex problems in the world, but it does mean that we are sensitive to the needs and struggles of other people. Coercion

Increasingly, we are seeing that certain groups use the power of the media and even of the state to coerce people to violate their consciences. We can see how unjust these types of actions are that insist that popular opinion, rather than conscience, should be our primary guide for action. Our Response

Inspired by the example of Sister Agnes Walsh and her mother superior, let us devote ourselves anew to following wherever the Lord leads. Let us take courage from their example of faith and, when facing our own trials, remember what Jesus promised his apostles before ascending into heaven: “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Be not afraid; God is with us. Reprinted [Excerpted] from Respect Life Program, copyright © 2017, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, D.C. All rights reserved.
