Beyond that silliness, we learn to put faith and trust in Jesus, who as our teacher and Lord, will grant us the saving presence of God. Today’s music echoes the theme of that trust. The Procession Hymn, “O God Our Help in Ages Past,” was written by Isaac Watts in 1714 at a time in England’s history when there was great chaos and turmoil. The text is taken from Psalm 90 and reminds us that no matter our situation, no matter our struggles and fears, no matter our doubts, we are told to have courage, for the Lord is our God. And, as Isaac Watts writes so powerfully in this hymn, our God is everlasting and will be our help through all of our years. The first stanza gives us every assurance we need: God is our help, our hope, and our home. This does not blithely dismiss our fears and troubles. They are, and always will be, very real. But it does assure us that even if we cannot feel the immediate comfort, or even when all we can do is lament, we have a God that withstands the storms of life and the tests of time, and who protects us and hears our cries. The Hymn at the Offertory, “The Storm Is Strong,” is a newer hymn written by Sylvia Dunstan. The text is an eloquent paraphrase of today’s Gospel reading, thus helping us to further internalize its message through song. THE ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR THE TWELFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME / YEAR B

MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES I love the Sundays in Ordinary Time. We all know what happens in the life of Jesus on Christmas and Easter, but we are able to learn so much more about him during Ordinary Time—his interests, personality, temperament, humor, priorities, etc. Missing a Sunday in Ordinary Time is like taking a bathroom break in the middle of a good movie… you come back and become the kind of person who always asks, “What did I miss, what did I miss?” A lot is revealed to us in today’s readings; on the more humorous and practical side, we learn that Jesus did not have motion sickness and is able to sleep while on a rocky boat! The text is taken from Psalm 90 and reminds us that no matter our situation, no matter our struggles and fears, no matter our doubts, we are told to have courage, for the Lord is our God. is a false identity. ERHALT UNS HERR was published in the sixteenth century in a compilation of sacred German songs.

The original hymn text that was paired with this tune was written by Martin Luther and spoke of obedience to God’s word. For the Communion procession, we will sing, “Be Not Afraid.” The writer, Bob Dufford, is a Jesuit priest and a former member of the Saint Louis Jesuits (a group of Jesuit scholastics from St. Louis who composed popular songs in an easy listening/folk style during the 1970’s). In this song, Fr. Dufford places you, the singer, in a variety of risky and treacherous situations (walking through deserts, sailing on rough waters, walking through fire, etc.), but reminds us, through the voice of God in the refrain, not to be fearful of where life leads us. The third verse is rather unrelated to the prior text and is reminiscent of the Beatitudes… that is for a different Sunday. Finally, our Concluding hymn, “I Sing the Mighty Power of God,” was again written by Isaac Watts, and the text extols the power, wisdom, and goodness of God. By singing this hymn, we recognize that it is God who controls our lives and the beautiful wonders of the world, and that it is He who keeps order through His ever-present care.

I will not be with you today as I am in Pittsburgh for two important events (beyond spending some long overdue time with my family). First, on Saturday, my alma mater, Duquesne University, is dedicating a splendid new pipe organ in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on campus. This installation has been a long time in the waiting and I’m sure that for those of you who were present at our organ installation nearly two years ago, a new pipe organ is a pretty big deal. Secondly, I will be attending the regional convention of the American Guild of Organists, which is also being held in Pittsburgh this year. While not as a large as a national convention (held every other year), the regional conventions are wonderful opportunities for church musicians to gather new ideas and rejuvenate their creativity after a busy musical season in their churches.

SUMMER WEEKDAY MASS SCHEDULE The weekday (Monday through Friday) 11:00 am Mass will be suspended during the months of July and August. Only the 8:00 am Mass will be celebrated July 6 through August 28. The 11:00 am Mass will resume on Monday, August 31. WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS St. Jane de Chantal Parish welcomes those who have recently registered in our parish.

LEAVING MASS EARLY? Leaving Mass before the Concluding Hymn can be a great distraction to your fellow parishioners, as well as to the celebrant and other liturgical ministers. We ask that if you do need to leave Mass early, due to an emergency, please use the main doors of the church. Exiting via the side door is distracting to the congregation and to the music ministers. Leaving Mass early should not become a habit. After receiving communion, you are encouraged to pray and reflect upon the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ, which you have just consumed. In the Gospel of John (13: 21-30), we learn that Judas Iscariot ate and left at

the Last Supper: “So he took the morsel and left at once.” Let us be more like the eleven other Apostles of Christ and faithfully stay by His side for just a few more minutes. We all know what happened to Judas… KEEPING OUR CHURCH CLEAN We have a small and dedicated group of parishioners who go around all of the pews in our church to straighten up the hymnals and throw out any debris. Their silent ministry is performed unnoticed by most of us, but if you see someone cleaning up the pews after Mass, please offer them gratitude for their work. Of special note – please do not put used Kleenex and tissues in the hymnal racks. The hymnal racks are for hymnals only and not for waste. Leaving used tissues can spread disease and also ruin our new hymnals. Thank you for your attention to this matter and for looking out for the health of your fellow parishioners, especially those who volunteer their time to keep our church clean and beautiful.

Because human life is a precious gift of God, we use medical interventions to preserve it. But there is no reason to employ useless measures. We cannot make universal statements that medically-assisted nutrition and hydration always must be given or that all gravely ill persons should not receive medically-assisted nutrition and hydration. Each case and every person are unique, but the presumption always is in favor of providing nutrition and hydration. To learn more, Maryland’s bishops have released a pastoral letter, Comfort and Consolation, on care for the sick and dying. Visit the Maryland Catholic Conference at www.mdcathcon.org/publications to download copies. Also available for download are: A Summary Q&A, that outlines the main points of Comfort and Consolation; and A Legal Guide, that provides practical advices for completing an

advance directive that properly reflects Catholic principles and that also includes the Catholic Declaration on Health Care Decision Making.

St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that Christ died “so that those who live might live no longer for themselves.” What we give to and do for others,

we give to and do for Jesus! (See 2 Corinthians 5:15)

SECOND COLLECTION: PETER’S PENCE The second collection next weekend, June 27/28, will be the annual Peter’s Pence collection. Gifts help the Holy Father support victims of war, oppression, natural disasters, and others most in need of assistance. In his apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, Pope Francis writes, “We incarnate the duty of hearing the cry of the poor when we are deeply moved by the suffering of others. Let us listen to what God’s word teaches us about mercy, and allow that word to resound in the life of the Church.” Our participation in this collection gives us an opportunity to be a witness of Our Lord’s love and mercy for the vulnerable and suffering around the world. Please give generously as you are able. POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, June 27/28, will benefit St. Martin’s Cloak. In the spirit of St. Martin, who tore his military cloak in half to share with a beggar, St. Martin’s Cloak provides financial and other assistance to those in need, particularly those in our parish. Financial assistance is completely confidential. Long term problems are referred to community resources.
