Weekend at Birney’s Feast of the Holy Family
Christmas is a me for family. Whether
we are spending the holidays with our bio-
logical families, religious communies and
parish families, or “chosen” families of
friends, Christmas is a season when we come
together with those whom we love to cele-
brate love, especially God’s love enfleshed
in the gi" of his Son.
The Feast of the Holy Family, celebrated on the Sunday
within the Octave of Christmas, is an invitaon to reflect on
the lives and relaonships of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary,
and Joseph, and on how God’s grace is at work within our
own families.
It was during his historic trip to the Holy Land in 1964 that
St. Pope Paul VI reflected, “Nazareth is a kind of school
where we may begin to discover what Christ’s life was like
and even to understand the Gospel. Here we can observe
and ponder the simple appeal of the way God’s Son came to
be known, profound yet full of hidden meaning. And gradu-
ally we may even learn to imitate him”.
The Church has consistently understood that, through
Jesus’ hidden life with Mary and Joseph in Nazareth, God
blessed the family- transforming “family” into a symbol of
God’s Reign of peace, joy, and love.
And so, this feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and
Joseph is much more than a child’s celebraon of Christmas
card senmentality. As Pope Francis has reflected, “In the
loving obedience of this woman, Mary, and this man, Jo-
seph, we have a family into which God comes. God always
knocks on the doors of our hearts. He likes to do that. He
goes out from within. But do you know what he likes best of
all? To knock on the doors of families. And to see families
which are united, families which love, families which bring
up their children, educang them and helping them to grow,
families which build a society of goodness, truth and
beauty.”
Family life takes work, as the Le:er to the Colossians re-
minds us: “Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved,
hear<elt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and
paence, bearing with one another and forgiving one anoth-
er … over all these put on love, that is, the bond of per-
fect” (3:12-13a, 14).
The Feast of the Holy Family challenges us to consider our
own families, both the ones in which we grew up and the
ones of which we are now a part—“It raises quesons in us
about the harmony of the home we’re in now—and what
part we play in both its peace and its disturbance … We
must ask ourselves if we are learning from one another, car-
ing for one another, becoming more spiritual together as we
go. And if not, why not? And what do we intend to do about
it, as Jesus did, for the sake of the rest of the world?” (Joan
ChiDster, O.S.B., The Liturgical Year).
Amid today’s important and ongoing debate about the
definion and nature of marriage and family, both within
the Church and in broader society, this Feast reminds us of
the true vocaon of the family: to foster the faith of each of
its members and to support them in their search for God
and God’s will for them. Mary and Joseph inslled in Jesus a
love for the tradions and laws of God’s Chosen People;
families, parishes, and even religious communies, are
called to nurture the same values.
How do you see yourself as a part of the “Family” of the
Church?
How can you share the virtues of the Holy Family of Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph in your own family and parish?
Who in your family—both in your home and in the broader
human family—is alone or on the margins? How can you be
a sign of God’s love for them? (Br. Silas Henderson, SDS)
Pope Quote
“Pray o.en for the help of the Virgin Mary, and Saint Jo-
seph, that they may teach you to receive God’s love as they
did. Your voca1on is not easy to live, especially today, but
the voca1on to love is a wonderful thing—it is the only force
that can truly transform the cosmos, the world.”
—Pope Benedict XVI

Holy Family
Today is the feast of the Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary and Joseph. We hear the
words: “The child grew and became
strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was
upon him.”. During this New Year may we also grow in
wisdom and have the favor of God upon us by remem-
bering to take care of our suffering brothers and
sisters.
In the month of December, through your gi:s, the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought the spirit of
Christmas to many neighbors in need within our
community.
Solemnity of Mary, Holy Mother of God
Holy Day of Obligaon
Tuesday, Dec. 31, 4 p.m. Vigil
Wednesday, Jan. 1, 10 a.m.
Long before there was any queson about the polical correctness of wishing others a “Merry Christ-
mas,” there was a friend of mine who made a yearly effort of explaining why he preferred to wish every-
one a “Happy Christmas.” He would point out that we never wish anyone a “Merry Easter” and would
queson whether this adjecve for Christmas, dang back to the 17th century, was the best one for us to
use today.
The first printed Christmas card is dated from 1843 wished recipients a “Merry Christmas” but at the
end of A Visit From St. Nicholas (‘Twas the night before...), Clement Moore wishes his readers a “Happy Christmas.” The
history, then, is mixed. “Merry” seems rather light and even “Happy” might fail to bear the weight of this day’s wishes.
What kind of Christmas do we hope and pray our family and friends will have?
My prayer is that you will have a Joyful Christmas: a Christmas rooted in the inner serenity that deep faith provides,
strong enough to survive the disappointments and sorrows life delivers to our doorstep and exuberant enough to cele-
brate life’s happiest mes. May the birthday of our King, Jesus, touch you with deep joy...
I pray, too, that you will have a Peaceful Christmas: the peace the world so clearly is unable to give itself; the peace that
broken hearts long for; the peace that is ours to share with one another in forgiveness, kindness and charity. May the
birthday of Christ sow seeds of peace in your heart...
Finally, I pray that you have a Hopeful Christmas. So much in the world around us interferes with our capacity to hope:
a spirit to truly long for life to come instead making this place our home. This lack of hope robs us of awe and reverence
before the mystery of life, the love of God, and the plan for our lives. May the birthday of Jesus renew hope in your heart...
I wish you a Joyful, Peaceful, Hopeful Christmas and should your Christmas be Merry and Happy, too—all the be:er!
I cannot believe it has nearly been a full year since I’ve arrived here at St. Frances Cabrini. My me has been so blessed.
I am so grateful to leave during this joyous me of Christmas. As you gather with your families this week to celebrate the
Birth of God in our midst know that I will be praying for you. Please do the same for me.
In the Heart of Jesus and Mary,
Fr. Steve

Reflec"ng with great joy in my heart on your awesome
generosity
Christmas blessings to my fellow parishioners of St. Frances
Cabrini Church!
As I flip through my 2019 calendar and review what we
accomplished together through Chrisan Service, my heart
is again filled with joy. I connue to be amazed at your
generous spirit, not just in this so-called “season of giving,”
but all the way back to January.
Let’s start with the Giving Trees! More than 1,800 tags
were hung, and taken, from the seven trees in the Narthex.
For three consecuve weekends, gi"s piled up underneath
each one. What a beauful site! One of the trees was des-
ignated for the families we adopt as a parish. This year, we
helped more than 40 families who called for holiday assis-
tance; twelve of those families were added to the trees and
the rest we shopped for with the generous cash and gi"
card donaons.
The rest of the year was filled with so many wonderful
ministries that we just couldn’t support without your help:
monthly food collecons going to stock the pantries of St.
Chrisne, All Saints, Our Lady of the Angels, St Pius, and
Blessed Hope - sharing the Eucharist and our faith with
those who can’t join us at Sunday and weekday liturgies -
providing food and decorang bags for the Sr. Judie Out-
reach program - making dresses, sani-pads and britches for
young African boys and girls – cuDng and rolling plarn for
the crocheted mats for the homeless – Blood Drives - serv-
ing lunch at All Saints, St. Leo, St. Chrisne and Manna
Meal as well as for our families a"er funerals - supporng
the efforts of St. Vincent DePaul - - filling Trick or Treat hy-
giene blessing bags – filling Candy Grams for college stu-
dents – welcoming guests through ChristNet, and cooking,
baking and doing laundry for them - serving coffee and do-
nuts a"er mass - parcipang in family service Saturdays
each month – comforng the grieving – supporng youth
sponsored events like the pancake breakfasts, Pumpkin
Patch, bo:le drives and the Internaonal Food Tasng –
sharing your day with the Tuesday Travelers.
Through you, God is truly in our midst, and our parish is
abundantly blessed with your presence. I connue to pray
that God remains a light in your life, showering you with
many blessings in the coming year.
Christmas peace to you,
Therese Tardiff

God’s blessings upon Fr. Steve
Almost a year to the day, Fr. Steve Mateja joined our parish as he transioned
back to parish ministry. During his me with us, he has shared his many gi"s, bro-
