From the Pastor's Desk:
Dear Parishioners of St. Florian,
Thank you for your generosity and for all you do for St.Florian. At this time, when the heating season is approach-ing, we are trying to meet the demands that this means.
As you know, our heating bills are high every year. Our
old Church boiler is not only old, it is not sufficient for
our needs. Once it is turned on our gas bills skyrocket
because the controls on the boiler are not precise. We
are still waiting for the TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS
campaign to give us money to install a new boiler, but
we need to wait until the campaign is over before we
receive any money, so there is still a couple of years
ahead of us. Meanwhile we have to face high heating
bills. We are still paying on last winter's bills and the
new heating season will begin in about 2 months. To
prevent the accumulation of all the heating bills I would
like to ask you to increase your donation in the ENERGY
ENVELOPE. I hope that the heating season will be mild
for all of us, but once the Church boiler is turned on
we are still paying for the usage.
I will keep you in my prayers, please keep me in yours.
Yours in Christ
Fr. Robert

Mass IntentionsAny Catholic may offer up the Mass in which he orshe participates for any good intention. Certainly, graces will accrue in accordance with the intensityof that person's participation and sincerity. However, the custom of requesting a priest to offer the Massfor a specific intention, even when one cannot bephysically present at the Mass, is a longstandingtradition in the Church. This is because the Churchconsiders the Mass as the greatest possible prayer ofintercession insofar as it is the perfect offering ofChrist to the Father by making present the paschalmystery of his death and resurrection. The faithfulgenerally make an offering, called a stipend, to thepriest in order to apply the Mass to a specific in-tention. By making this offering, the faithful, byparting with something that is their own, associatethemselves more intimately with Christ who offershimself in the sacred Host, and obtain thereby moreabundant fruits Thus, in normal circumstances, apriest may only accept one stipend for any one Masseven though he may offer up the Mass for severalintentions.

What is a Mary Garden?A Mary Garden is a devotional garden planned arounda shrine to the Virgin Mary. This style of devotionalgarden is most closely associated with Catholic tradition, although people of other Christian denominations mayalso construct Mary Gardens. The concept of the MaryGarden is closely linked with the medieval hortus con-clusus, or “closed garden.” Mary Gardens can be foundin private homes and around Catholic churches, com-munity halls, and other gathering places.
The practice of making Mary Gardens appears to dateback to the medieval period, when monks and nunsconstructed closed garden shrines to Our Lady. By tra-dition, a Mary Garden is in an enclosed area, referencingher purity, although when enclosed space is limited,it is certainly possible to put a Mary Garden in anopen area, and sometimes boundaries by low fencesor walls are used to create a partially enclosed feel.
In a Mary Garden, people plant a variety of flowers, trees, and shrubs associated with the Virgin Mary.Zinnias, snapdragons, Sweet Alyssum, cornflowers,Impatiens, larkspur, marigolds, forget-me-nots, poppies, morning glories, petunias, and sweet scabious are allassociated with the Virgin Mary. Other plants one mightsee in a Mary Garden include laurel trees, mayweed, maidenhair ferns, strawberries, ladyslipper orchids, lilyof the valley, trefoil, columbine, ribbongrass, peonies, foxgloves, bachelor's buttons, Amaryllis, begonias, bellflowers, bluets, buttercups, violets, irises, and roses.
A statue of the Virgin is common in a Mary Garden. Some Mary Gardens have a Madonna and Child, whileothers simply show the Virgin Mary alone, and otherreligious figures may be included. Commonly, a benchor patio is included so that people can sit in contem-plation in the Mary Garden, and gardeners may use awater feature to muffle outside noise, or a birdbath toencourage birds to visit. There may be a space to lightcandles while saying prayers.
The layout of a Mary Garden can vary considerably. Some people set a Mary Garden up in the shape of across, while others make patterns with raised beds.Catholics attach specific meanings to various flowers. The Mary Garden may also be laid out with a windingpath which allows people to contemplate various as-pects of the Virgin Mary. Overall, the design is meantto be peaceful and pleasant, with the goal of promotingdeep thought and providing a space for prayers.
Mary at Massby Paul Turner
Devotion to Mary remains a hallmark of the Catholicfaith. Some people unfamiliar with our religion assumethat prayer to Mary forms the backbone of the Mass.Wrong! Prayer to Mary is certainly the backbone of therosary, but there isn't a single prayer addressed to Maryin the entire Mass, front to back, on any day of theliturgical year. When it comes to prayer, we acknowledgeHebrews 7:25, which says Christ lives for ever to makeintercession for us. So we direct our prayers to Godthrough Christ. However, because ofMary's central rolein salvation history, she makes several appearancesin the Mass texts every Mass, every day of the liturgicalyear. Most important, Mary's name is pronounced rightin the heart of Mass in the eucharistic prayer. She iscalled by two titles made mystic by their juxtaposition:virgin and mother. In the second eucharistic prayerfor children, she is also called "Mother of God andour mother." Mary also appears in the Creed, as thevirgin who gave birth to the Word made flesh. Attimes we celebrate a Mass in her honor, under a titlelike Mary, Mother of the Church, or to commemoratean event in her life, like the Visitation. A preface oftenprayed on these days echoes her song of praise, theMagnificat. But most frequently she is rememberedas the Virgin Mother. By connecting these two titlesof Mary, the church invites us to reflect on her son.Mary's special role as the Virgin Mother reminds usthat the miraculous birth of Jesus introduced the worldto an extraordinary child whose miracles would nevercease. At first, the title "Mother ofGod" sounds wrong.God is the uncreated creator of all. How could Godhave a mother? That puzzling question draws us intoa deeper meditation on the identity of Jesus. BecauseJesus is both fully God and fully human, Mary mustbe called Mother of God. In the liturgy Mary's rolealways bows to her son. She gives birth to him not onlyin time but in the liturgy and in our hearts. During themonth of May, many will address devotions to Mary, and rightly so. But she will direct them to Christ.
