Thank You Mrs. Schippers

As you may have already heard, Mrs. Pat Schippers is retiring after working forty-two years as school

secretary. Forty-two years is an incredible amount of time! On behalf of the school and parish, I want to thank Mrs. Schippers for her dedication and faith. What a blessing she has been to our school.

Many successful adults comment that it was a teacher in their grade school that really inspired them to do their best in life. Good teachers are instrumental during the formative years of a child. The seed of excellence starts at a young age. It is often an inspirational teacher who helps a child reach his or her full potential. However, teachers need support in order to teach well. Mrs. Schippers has been a support for all the teachers in the school. Her support of the teachers, and her efforts in helping the school run well, has benefitted many students who have passed through the doors of St. Eugene School. It is a real blessing to have people who work behind the scenes to make sure everything is running smoothly.

On behalf of St. Eugene Parish, I want to wish Mrs. Schippers all the best in her well-earned retirement. May God bless her as she begins a new chapter in her life! Yours in Christ,

SAVED BY THE ONE WHO WAS REJECTED Some city teenagers often scorn and reject farm kids. Yet it's no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world's crops and livestock. This week's scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday's reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John's letter we hear that we have become God's beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who "lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God's beloved flock? ADORATION of the

BLESSED SACRAMENT Mondays in church

12:00 NOON - 8:00 pm with Benediction at 7:45 pm

By His Eucharistic presence,

Christ dwells in our mist. Out of love He has enriched

the Church with His unceasing presence. As God in former days dwelt in the temple of Jerusalem,

He now lives in our churches and chapels. He invites us to remain in close contact with Him. Through Eucharist Adoration we concentrate

our attention on Him as we yield to the fascination of His invisible gaze.

Opening our hearts, we entrust all our petitions to Him.

Jean Galot, S.J.

PLEASE COME — VISIT JESUS

PEOPLE OF THE CROSS UNITED We are all members of the Body of Christ. If one member suffers, all members suffer.

(1 COR: 12:26) Please pray for our brothers and sisters who suffer persecution in many countries throughout the world because of their Christian faith.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

5TH SUNDAY ROSARY Next Sunday, April 29 Church Our nation and the world are experiencing a growing moral breakdown that causes assaults on our core rights, restrictions on our religious beliefs, disdain for life, elimination of GOD from our society, and threatens the collapse of world order. We pray the rosary to Our Lady as she requested, to heal our nation, to ask for peace, to turn our people back to GOD and to offer reparation and penance for our sins. The Knights of Columbus invite all parishioners and their families to pray the rosary with us every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month. The 5th Sunday Rosary service will be conducted on April 29th, immediately following the 11:30 AM Mass. Please join us to pray for peace and guidance.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Most languages take the name for this fifty-day season from the Lord's Passover: Pasqua in Italian, Pâques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King's chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit--an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn't take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name for Christmas, too: Yule. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SILENCE

Silence is a gift of God, to let us speak more intimately with God.

—St. Vincent Pallotti

Why call me a sheep? Why are Christ's people called sheep? Sheep love to be together; as Christ has called us to unity. Sheep are little creatures, just as Christ's people are little in the eyes of the world, and should be even less in their own eyes. Sheep are looked upon to be the most harmless, quiet creatures just as we should do no harm to God’s children here on earth. And the meekness of sheep reminds us of our dear Lord, who said: `Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.' Sadly too, sheep, out of all creatures in the world, are the most apt to stray and be lost. Turn out a horse, or a dog, and they will find their way home, but a sheep wanders about; he bleats here and there, waiting to be found by the faithful shepherd.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
