Third Sunday of Advent • December 16, 2018
Gospel Reading of the Week
3rd Sunday of Advent
In the same sentence where he reminds his listeners that he has cured the
blind, the lame, the deaf, the sick and even raised the dead, Jesus concludes
by adding, "The poor have the good news proclaimed to them." How did
that make the list of supernatural cures? What's so miraculous about good
news? The poor are not just those in physical poverty, but those whose sins
have impoverished their souls. This of course applies to us. The poverty of
our own sinfulness can be overcome by the forgiveness offered to us in
Christ. Because of this, we have cause to rejoice!
On this Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, we are encouraged to
rejoice. Gaudete Sunday derives its name from the opening prayer of the
Mass for this day, where we pray, "Gaudete in Domino semper" ("Rejoice
in the Lord always"). So in the midst of Advent fasting and devotions, we rejoice because the time we have been
preparing for is almost at hand. We pause in this season of anticipation to remember that, in truth, our hopes have
already been fulfilled. He is among us, saving us even now!
WHY I S T H E T H I R D
S U ND A Y O F A D V EN T
P I N K ? ( WHY I S T H E
T H I R D C A ND L E I N T H E
A D V EN T WRE A T H
P I N K ? ) by Jared Dees, Catholic Author
• Purple is a penitential color of
fasting while pink (rose) is the
color of joy.
• The 3rd Sunday in Advent is
Gaudete Sunday (from the
Latin meaning “rejoice”) which
is taken from Philippians 4:4-5,
the Entrance Antiphon of the
day.
• Long ago the Pope would
honor a citizen with a pink rose
(or a rose rose?) Priests then
would wear pink vestments as a
reminder of this coming joy.
Rose is also used during Laetare
Sunday (the Fourth Sunday of
Lent) to symbolize a similar
expectation of the coming joy of
Christ’s coming in Easter.
We hear in the Gospel today:
* The word "Christ" comes from the Greek translation of the
Hebrew Messiah, which means "anointed".
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 436)
John the Baptist told the people that one mightier is coming…
indicating that he was not the Christ. What essential Old
Testament prophesies did the Messiah, the Christ,
need to fulfill?
● Born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2, Matt 2:1; Luke 2:4-7)
● Born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14) as a descendant of Abraham
(Genesis 12:1-3; 22:18)
● Born of the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10, Mic. 5:2)
● From the line of David (2 Sam 7:12-16; Ps 132:11; Jer. 23:5)
Only one person fulfilled these prophesies…
Jesus Christ.
“Now the people were filled with expectation,
and all were asking in their hearts whether
John might be the Christ. *
John answered them all, saying,
‘I am baptizing you with water, but one
mightier than I is coming.
I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of His
sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy
Spirit and fire’.” Luke 3:15-16

baked by the generous parishioners along with the
Hospitality Ministry.
It was a great opportunity to come together for such
an uplifting and spirit-filled event! A big thank you to
everyone who helped to make this program a success and
put us in the Christmas spirit!

Spiritual Adoption Program─Happy Birthday!
Your spiritually adopted baby will be born this month—
nine months after being conceived by his/her mother.
The only change at birth is a change in the external life
support system of the baby. The baby is no different
now than before birth except that he/she breathes and
eats differently. The baby is truly a miracle. The baby
began as a 46-chromosome cell and has developed over
the past nine months into this unique human baby we
now can see. Never before in history, nor ever again, will
anyone exist who is exactly like your spiritually adopted
baby. Your prayers saved the baby’s life. Thank you on
behalf of all of the little babies and their mothers for
your loving prayers that helped to bring them to birth
“so that they might have life and have it to the full!”
Martha & Mary Ministry will meet on Tuesday,
December 18 at 7:00 PM in the home of Jean Marshall.
Call Jean at 412-881-2351 for directions to her home.

Blessed Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.
OUR PARISH’S ANNUAL GIVING TREE, organized by our
Ladies of Charity, has been another HUGE success! In another
wonderful show of generosity, the people of St. Thomas A’
Becket contributed literally hundreds of gifts — which means
that hundreds of poor, sick, elderly, and infants of our community
will experience the joy this Christmas of not only receiving much
needed and wanted items, but also the joy of knowing that
someone cares! THANK YOU to all those who contributed to
our “Giving Tree” and all those who organized it and made
sure all those gifts got where they needed to be!
The “5th Annual St. Thomas A’ Becket Parish COOKIE
WALK” was another wonderful event in our
parish AND a wonderful example of
generous people contributing their time and
talents! We had 77 bakers, each of whom
contributed 10 dozen cookies! Between the
event itself and making assortment boxes
available after the weekend Mass, everything
was sold. The event raised $4,016! MANY
THANKS go out to the volunteers who
organized, decorated, set-up, cleaned-up and
staffed the entire event! Everyone did a
fantastic job! But it obviously couldn’t have
happened without all those generous bakers
who carefully crafted ALL THOSE
COOKIES!! TO ALL WHO DONATED
COOKIES, THANK YOU!! Your skills and generosity
are VERY MUCH appreciated!!!
Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards renovating
the old church into a fun-filled gym/activity center.
LESSONS & CAROLS
Wednesday, December 19 at 7 PM
St. Thomas a’ Becket Church
This service of magnificent songs and
Holy Scripture readings is a spiritual
oasis in the midst of the holiday
hubbub, offering time for reflection,
meditation, and peace. The choir members of our parish
grouping will lead this service. We welcome all!
END OF YEAR GIVINGOur Parish Share goal for 2018 has been
$136,998.00. We always have a good response, but somemes the
response is “last minute.” We are almost at the end of this year’s
campaign and sll haven’t quite met our goal. We sll owe
approximately $27,000. There will be a 2nd collecon at all
Christmas Masses for the “Christmas Charies for Children and
Youth” which supports some of the various Diocesan programs
that benefit children. Monies from this 2nd collecon will also be
credited toward our Parish Share goal. As always, any amount we
collect for Parish Share OVER our goal; that money stays in our
parish funds and that overage amount is not viewed as “regular”
offertory, so it does NOT figure into our assessment for the next
year. THANK YOU for all your generosity and for the support you
give to our parish throughout the year!
2019 CHILDREN’S CHURCH ENVELOPES
Church envelopes are now being prepared for children who have
requested them. If you are interested but haven’t requested them
yet please call the Preschool Office at 4126534322. The children
are encouraged to use and donate each week any amount they
wish. This endeavor will help the children realize they belong to and
are part of our parish family.

The Advent Wreath
THE SHEPHERD CANDLE - JOY

The Third Week of Advent
Over the last two weeks, we have been lighting the
candles on our wreath. What is increasingly evident in
the Advent candles readily demonstrate the strong
contrast between darkness and light. Scripturally,
Christ is referred to as the “Light of the World”,
contrasted with the darkness of sin. Human history
spanned many years before the Incarnation. Our
prophesied Savior, Emmanuel would come to save, to
fulfill God’s promise to make all things new through
Him.
As His Advent, or “coming” draws nearer, the
third candle is lit, with each candle dispelling the
darkness a little more. Thus, the Advent wreath helps
us to spiritually contemplate the great drama of
salvation history that surrounds the birth of God
Incarnate who comes to redeem the human race.
Gaudete Sunday or the Third Sunday of Advent,
symbolizes Joy reminding us of the Joy the world
experienced at the coming of the birth of Jesus.
“…and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped
him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there
was no room for them in the inn. And there were
SHEPHERDS, in the fields nearby, keeping watch over
their flocks. An angel of the Lord appeared to them and
the glory of the Lord appeared to them and they were
terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.
I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the
people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been
born to you; He is Christ the Lord.” Suddenly a great
company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising
God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace to men on whom his favor rest, (Luke 2:7)

Third Sunday of Advent • December 16, 2018
In Our Diocese
Rejoice in the Lord Always – The Third Sunday of Advent is a bit different than the
others. While violet has been the color we are used to the past few weeks, this week the
candle and the vestments are a rose color. These changes signify an increased joy in our
hearts on this Sunday which we call Gaudete, which means “rejoice!” Our joy is
increased because we know that our Savior is near, Emmanuel, God is with us. And, yet,
a bit of anxiety may also creep in. We may be asking ourselves, “are we ready?” “What
must we still do?” This is what those in today’s Gospel were asking John the Baptist. His response? Be
generous. Be honest. Don’t cheat others. As Christmas draws ever nearer, there may be lots of things that
distract us from what the Lord truly desires of us this time of year. God wants us to rejoice today, and all days,
in freedom of heart so that we may share our gifts and proclaim the good news of God dwelling among us and
in us. These lessons can also serve us well as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! and recognize
God at work in the hearts of sisters and brothers in faith. Rejoice! The Lord is near! Let the peace of God
guide your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS by Susan Vogt
“Rejoice in the Lord always…The Lord is
near.” (Philippians 4:4-5) Sometimes pressure preparing for
Christmas can blind us to what’s really important. Start
by remembering that Christ lives in your beloved. Pause.
Take time to rejoice in each other today.
PARENTING POINTERS by Susan Vogt
Last Sunday we heard the apostle, John say “Prepare the
way of the Lord.” (Luke 3:4) There are usually many
preparations to make for Christmas. Help your child
focus on preparing and waiting for the celebration.
(Exception: school celebrations that we don’t have
control over.)
FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar
Today’s Gospel tells us to SHARE! This Christmas, resist
the pressure to give token gifts. Instead, use those funds
to give necessities to the poor. If our impoverished
brothers and sisters are not on our gift list, we’ve missed
the point of Christmas.
There will be a Protecting God’s Children Workshop on
Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 9AM to Noon at St. Paul
Cathedral Parish (108 North Dithridge Street, Oakland).
All adult parishioners (18 and over) who wish to serve in a
Liturgical Role (Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Adult Altar
Servers, Catechists, Volunteers, etc.) must attend a
Protecting God’s Children Workshop. For questions or
more information, call Mary Ann at 412-807-1611.
Candlelight Mass -- Join your friends and
neighbors for the monthly Candlelight Mass at
Saint Stanislaus Church in the Strip District.
The next Mass will be Friday, January 4, 2019
at 8PM. Confessions and music start at 7PM
and fellowship follows the Mass. For more
info, visit facebook.com/beholdpittsburgh.
O God, help us to be in touch with the goodness of the
world and the joyfulness of life. Let us rejoice and be glad
for all the great and small pleasures that come to us from
you through creation. —Richard Rohr, OFM & Joseph Martos
