Gospel Reading of the Week
4th Sunday of Advent
Here we are, mere days from Christmas and we hear a Gospel anticipating the birth of another child.
Mary has received word that her cousin Elizabeth is with child. Pregnant as she is, Mary "set out and
traveled to the hill country in haste." She has recently received the greatest news of her life - that she
is to be mother to the Messiah by the power of the Holy Spirit - but her concern is for her cousin in
need. Through God's grace, Elizabeth turns it into an opportunity to honor the coming Christ.
"Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb." Yet Mary's example of selflessness should inspire us.
As Christmas draws near, there is plenty of goodness to anticipate for many of us. We'll reunite with family and friends,
uphold time-honored traditions, swap stories old and new, exchange gifts and welcome Jesus at the Christmas liturgy. These
are wonderful things! Of course, they probably all come with their own to-do list. Shop for last-minute gifts, pick up recipe
ingredients, ready the guest room, or pack your own bags. Mary probably had things to do as well. She had a lot to consider,
for one thing. How do you plan to tell your parents you're pregnant, but no man was involved? When Joseph finds out, who
will care for the practical needs of you and your child? Into what may have been a chaos of questions, Mary receives news that
someone is in need. She goes immediately.
In these final days before Christmas, stay watchful and awake! You never know when God might invite you to welcome
hospitality and compassion. It might be tempting to reject the opportunity for your own needs. Follow the example of Mary!
If God is providing you an opportunity to love, He will provide the means to accomplish all your other tasks. This Christmas
season, may you too hear, "Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

Dear People of God of St. Clare of Assisi, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Holy Spirit and St. Thomas a’ Becket,
The Savior of the World has come down from heaven. Let us rejoice! This proclamation filled with deep
rejoicing, echoed in the night at Bethlehem. Today, the Church renews it with unchanged joy—the Savior is born
for us! A wave of tenderness and hope fills our hearts, together with an overpowering need for closeness and
peace. In the crib we contemplate the One, who stripped himself of divine glory in order to become poor, driven
by love for mankind! Beside the crib, the Christmas tree with its twinkling lights, reminds us that with the birth of
Jesus, the tree of life has blossomed anew in the desert of humanity. The crib and tree: precious symbols which
hand down in time the true meaning of Christmas!
In the heavens echoes the proclamation of the angels: “To you is born a Savior in the City of David, who
is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11) What a wonder! By being born in Bethlehem, the Eternal Son of God has entered
into the history of each person living on the face of the earth. He is now present in the world as the one Savior of
Humanity. For this reason we pray to him—Savior of the world, save us!
Lord, save us from the wars and armed conflicts, which lay to waste entire regions
of the world, from the scourge of terrorism and from the many forms of violence, which
assail the weak and the vulnerable.
Save us from discouragement as we face the paths to peace, difficult paths indeed,
yet possible and therefore necessary paths, which are always and everywhere urgent,
especially in the Land where You were born, Prince of Peace.
And you, Mary, the Virgin of expectation and fulfillment, who holds the secret of
Christmas, make us able to recognize in the Child, whom you hold in your arms, the
heralded Savior, who brings hope and peace to all.
With you, we worship Him and trustingly say: we need You, Redeemer of man. You,
who know the hopes and fears of our hearts, come and stay with us. Lord, may the joy
of your Nativity reach to the farthest ends of the universe!

In Our Parish Communities
The Patriarchs and
Prophets prayed for the
coming of Christ in
Bethlehem, and this first
coming did not silence
the groaning of creation. For, according to the words of
the Apostle, while man waited for the birth of Jesus in
Judea, the rest of the universe still waits for the revelation
of Christ in His Church. The mystery of Christmas,
therefore, lays upon all a debt and an obligation to the rest
of men and to the whole created universe. We who have
seen the light of Christ are obliged, by the greatness of
grace that has been given to us, to make known the
presence of the Savior to the ends of the earth. This we
will do not only by preaching the glad tidings of His
coming, but above all, by revealing Him in our lives.
Christ is born to us today. This one day is the day of
His birth, but every day of our mortal lives must be His
manifestation, His divine Epiphany, in the world which
He has created and redeemed.
—Thomas Merton, Seasons of Celebration

the Bible, making the complex simple. Uncover the story

First time parents or those who have never
taken a pre-Baptism class, are required to
do so before their child’s Baptism. The
next class will be on January 22 at 7PM at
St. Thomas a’ Becket in the Pre-school,
first floor.
Parents who have already had a child
baptized, consider being a mentor for parents seeking to
have their child baptized. As a practicing Catholic raising
your children in the faith, you can offer unique insight,
guidance and support to parents beginning this exciting
time in their lives. In the role of mentor, you would assist
at monthly Pre-Baptism classes. A monthly commitment is
not required, as parents can rotate every few months.
To register for the January 22 class or to inquire about
being a mentor, call Deacon Gerry Como at 412-655-2885,
or Amy LaMartina at (412) 882-8744.

towards our PSP assessment goal of
$40,000.
We have received a Thank You for the donation that was
made to the World Mission Sunday Collection. Our
community joined with Catholics throughout the world to
support the work and witness of the Mission Church,
through which the poor receive practical help and
experience God’s love and mercy. Your spirit of prayer and
sacrifice helps those who are the change-makers on the
front lines of the Missions.
St. Clare of Assisi Parish Office will be closed
for the Christmas Holidays ...
next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Every month, we have a $5 FAB FIVE Ticket fundraiser.
Each ticket has 5 numbers listed on them. A $500 Winner is
determined by the 7PM Daily Lottery on the last day of the
month. These 5 numbers change monthly. Since only 200
tickets are sold each month, we usually have the same
buyers. If a ‘customer’ chooses to give up their ticket(s),
they would become available for others. If you would like to
be placed on our “waiting list to receive a future Fab Five
Ticket, please call our Parish Office. Due to the bulletin

Holy Spirit • Parish News
One of the obvious themes of Christmas is
the Nativity Scene, with Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
and the three Wise Men. What fascinates
at times is their unerring resolve to follow
a star, to see a newborn king. They would
bring gifts of Gold, Frankincense and
Myrrh, but in the scheme of things, the
biggest gift was their homage to the Savior.
In one fashion or another, you were led to
attend Holy Mass. It may be you are a
parishioner coming to weekly Mass. It might
be children coming home to visit family, who
come to Church to worship as a family. Some
of you may be the ones who come a few
times a year. Some may be from the area and
are just visiting. Some may be from other
Faith Traditions and are here to worship with
friends or family.
No matter what the reason may be for your
attending Mass this year, be welcome to
worship. We offer an open invitation for all
of our visitors to come again and visit with
us during the year. Never feel that you are
unwanted or not welcomed. Alone, without
the Lord, we can do nothing. Together,
with the Lord, anything could
happen. Like the Three Wise Men,
there will be other “stars” leading
us to Christ. Let us all go out to
meet him and welcome Him into
our hearts.

HOLY SPIRIT PARISH OFFICE will close
for the holidays on Monday, December
24 and reopen on Wednesday, January 2.
Remember in your prayers all those who have died,
especially Helen Schmidt, sister of Albert Placzek.
May she enjoy eternal life in heaven.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK is the
sacrament that helps unite those who are
suffering with Jesus’ saving and healing
power. Through this sacrament people receive
forgiveness for their sins and comfort in their
suffering; they are restored in spirit; and
sometimes they even experience the return of
physical health. Calling for a priest does not
mean someone is going to die. Please do not
wait until it is too late. Priests have many
responsibilities. If you wait until the last
moment to call─a priest may not be
available.
PLEASE NOTE If you are attending Mass at
another parish, please use your “Holy Spirit”
envelope. Parishes throughout the Diocese of
Pittsburgh will forward the envelope AND the
donation to Holy Spirit.
MASS INTENTION REQUESTS Request Forms
are available in the back of the Church and can be
returned via the collection basket, dropped off at the
Parish Office or mailed. We are accepting requests
through March of 2019 for both weekend and
weekday Masses. No requests will be taken over the
phone!
ATTENTION MINISTERS: If you are unable to
serve on your scheduled date, you are asked to find a
replacement for yourself. One can’t assume that
there will always be an extra Eucharistic Minister,
Lector or Altar Server at Mass to take your place.
We hope that more parishioners may be interested in
joining our Ministries. Please give it some thought
and prayer this Advent Season.
Much help will be needed
to bring in trees, string
lights, etc. We hope you
can stay for awhile to
lend a hand! Many hands
will get the job done a lot
quicker.
Today, December 23
after the 11AM Mass
CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP will meet on
Saturday, January 12 from 9-10AM in the Spirit Room.
In Signposts we will focus on lesson 44, “Christians and
Civil Authority.” All men in the parish are invited to
attend.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS We will be taking some
time off for the holidays. Our next Super Bingo will be
held on Sunday, February 10. Doors and kitchen open at
Noon. Early Bird games begin at 1PM with regular games
to follow. Tickets, which are $25, are available at the door.
Hope to see you there!

Heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of
George Mieze and Tom Orpikowski of our parish.
May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed be
embraced by the Heavenly Father unto everlasting life.
May George & Tom rest in the peace of the Lord.
December 29 (Saturday)
is the feast day of
the patron saint of our parish

ST. THOMAS A’ BECKET

Thomas Becket was born in London
in 1118. A cleric of the diocese of
Canterbury, he first became
chancellor to the king and then in
1162 was chosen bishop. His tireless
defense of the rights of the Church
against Henry II prompted the king to
exile Becket to France for six years. After returning
to his homeland, he endured many trials and on
December 29, 1170, he was murdered in the
cathedral by agents of the king.

PRAYER
Almighty God, you granted the martyr Thomas the
grace to give his life for the cause of justice. By his prayers
make us willing to renounce for Christ our life in this
world so that we may find it in heaven. Amen
May God bless you and may the light of Christ shine
brightly on you and your family, friends and loved ones
this Christmas season and throughout the New Year!
For those volunteers who help out regularly before, during
& after our liturgies there is a small token of
appreciation for you in the “Work Room” off of the
narthex. This would include Extra-ordinary Ministers of
the Eucharist, Lectors, Ushers, Adult & Funeral Choirs,
“Dust Busters”, Money Counters & Wedding
Coordinators. For our great group of Altar Servers, there
is a “thank you” gift for you as well, that can be found in
the Altar Server Sacristy. As you take one of the gifts,
please cross your name off the list that is there. (If your
name was accidentally omitted from the list, please write it
on the sheet.) THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!!
There will be a 2nd collection at all Christmas Masses
for the “Christmas Charities for Children and Youth”
which supports some of the various Diocesan programs that
benefit children (for example, the great work done by the
McGuire Home, among others). Because this collection is
already going to the aid of these important programs,
whatever we collect is also credited toward our Parish Share
goal. Your contributions to this collection then, have a three
fold impact: they benefit numerous children; benefit our
parish; AND benefit you (spiritually as a work of charity,
and worldly, as they are of course tax deductible)!
END OF YEAR GIVING—Our Parish Share goal for
2018 has been $136,998.00. We always have a good
response, but sometimes the response is “last minute.” We
are almost at the end of this year’s campaign and still
haven’t quite met our goal. We still owe approximately
$24,000. Any amount we collect OVER our goal, remains
in our parish funds and that overage amount is not viewed
as “regular” offertory, so it does NOT figure into our
assessment for the next year. THANK YOU for all your
generosity and for the support you give to our parish
throughout the year!

The Candle of Love
The angels announced the Good news of a
Savior. God sent His only Son to earth to
save us, because He loved us!
“For God so loved the world that he
gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not
perish, but have eternal life. For God
did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but to save the
world through him.” (John 3:16-17)
Classes resume in January – Reminders will be
emailed to families and will be listed in
upcoming bulletins.

5th CANDLE – (white)
“CHRIST CANDLE”
On Christmas Eve, have your family replace
all four candles with white candles and place a
large white pillar candle in the middle of the
wreath for a total of five candles (the five
wounds of Christ). The white candle reminds us
that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to
wash away our sins! His birth was for his death,
his death was for our birth! “The next day John
saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look,
the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the
world!‘” (John 1:29)
“Now there was a man of the Pharisees
named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish
ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and
said, ‘Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who
has come from God. For no one could perform
the miraculous signs you are doing if God were
not with him.’ In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell
you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of
God unless he is born again.’ ‘How can a man
be born when he is old?’ Nicodemus asked.
‘Surely he cannot enter a second time into his
mother’s womb to be born!’ Jesus answered, ‘I
tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom
of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives
birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at
my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind
blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound,
but you cannot tell where it comes from or
where it is going. So it is with everyone born of
the Spirit.” (John 3:1-8)
