ST. CHARLES BORROMEO CATHOLIC CHURCH FORT WAYNE, INDIANA
The organ music played at all the Masses last weekend other than at 11:00 a.m. was chosen in honor of Msgr. John Suelzer 's 50th Anniversary of his Ordination. For the prelude, "Prelude Fugue and Chaconne" was written by Dietrich Buxtehude, an early Baroque composer who was born in Denmark but eventually served as organist at the Mariankirche in Lubeck, Germany. He was admired by the young J.S. Bach who was known to walk miles and miles to hear Buxtehude play the organ.
The, "Mode de re" from Eight Modal Pieces was written by the French composer, Jean Langlais who lived from 1907 to 1991. Langlais is one of Msgr. Suelzer's favorite composers. Langlais became blind by the age of three but studied organ over the years with some of the greatest French organists. He became organist at the famous Ste. Clotilde Church in Paris in 1945 and remained at that post until 1988.
"Fanfare" by Percy Whitlock, written in 1940 was originally composed for orchestra. It was only recently transcribed for organ. Whitlock lived in England and was a student of the great English composer, Ralph Vaughan-Williams. He only lived to the age of 42 after suffering from tuberculosis, hypertension, and eventually blindness but his contributions to the musical world are significant.
For the postlude, the final movement from "Symphonie I,” nearly 10 minutes in length, was composed by the great French composer, Louis Vierne who lived from 1870-1937. Vierne also became blind during early childhood. He eventually became one of the most well known and respected organists and composers of his time, serving as organist both at the Church of Ste. Sulpice and The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Vierne died on the organ bench while giving his 1750th organ concert at Notre Dame.
I am grateful to my current organ teacher, Dr. Marilyn Keiser, retired faculty member from Indiana University in Bloomington for her coaching in preparing these pieces for Msgr. Suelzer's celebration. Dr. Keiser played a recital here at St. Charles on our Reuter pipe organ in 2012.
