  • REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 JANUARY 19, 2020

    Brothers and Sisters,

Today on this Second Sunday in Ordinary Time it may seem that our church is a bit bare a er all the beau ful images and finery of the Christmas season are now gone. Well I beg to differ. This is no ordinary stretch of Ordinary Time for we know that following Jesus’ bap sm in the Jordan by John the Bap st, Jesus began his public ministry and so this Sunday serves as a reminder that our own bap sm calls us into ministry as well. The rich color of dark green returns to our church during the winter peri-od of Ordinary Time accented by white, the color of snow. Winter flowers once again grace our altars and the liturgy in winter Ordinary Time is filled with images of and about gladsome light.

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,” proclaims John the Bap st in today’s gospel as Jesus comes to him to be bap zed. These are the same words we hear proclaimed again each Sunday when we are invited to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. What a blessing it is if we take that announcement as a reminder that we too are called to be like John the Bap st to other people.

In our readings today, Isaiah, Paul and John the Bap st were each called by God for a special purpose. Isaiah tells us of being called to reach out first to the exiled people of Israel and then to all na ons. Paul tells the Corinthians that he was called to be an apostle. John was called to make Jesus known by bap zing with water.

At the me Isaiah wrote the words in today’s first reading the Chosen People, Israel, had suffered a crushing loss to King Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian Empire. The temple was destroyed, Jerusalem was in ruins, and the people were sca ered. However, Isaiah says that Yahweh would liberate them and send them the long-expected Messiah, as he promised to Abraham. He was to be “as a light to the na ons” that the Lord’s “salva on may reach to the end of the earth.” Scholars debate who Isaiah is referring to when he repeatedly writes of a servant of the Lord. Chris ans see Jesus as the fulfillment of these prophecies, formed from the womb (Is. 49:5) to bring salva on to all people (Is. 49:6) and thereby revealing the glory of God (Is. 49:35).

In our second reading Paul reminds us that being Chris an means we are called to be saints in heaven when our years on earth are over. Living a truly Chris an life means that we carry out faithfully and honestly our daily tasks. Our weekdays are as important as our Sundays. Paul s ll prays for us and wishes for us that grace and peace which he wished for the Corinthians. We need God’s grace, and his divine help, to live in peace and union with him and our fellow men. In to-day’s gospel from John (not the Bap st) we are shown how John the Bap st himself acknowledged that Jesus ranked before him, because as he put it, “he existed before me”. We, who have been bap zed in the Spirit are called to point towards Jesus not simply by word of mouth but above all, by our daily lives.

Some final notes. On Monday, the 20th we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr. who lived his life in the sprit and on Wednesday, the 22nd the church celebrates a Day of Prayer for the legal protec on of unborn children. Faithful

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
