Notes from THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Bulletin Notices for Week of November15, 2015 – 33 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time: Change in Mass time on Thanksgiving Day: Mass on Thanksgiving Day will begin at 8:30 A.M. Reflections on Readings for 33 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time: We know that the Lord will not abandon us. Where do we find hope? The heavens tell of the glory of God. We are rapidly coming to the end of another liturgical year. Today’s Gospel asks us to look at the time when we will meet the Lord at the end of our lives or at the end of the world. How happy or satisfied will we be at that moment with the quality of our love and service at the end of our life? We have a second chance now to prepare for that hour. Will we try to make the effort to love and serve as Jesus did? As Christians our lives are rooted in the hopes of a better world and that better days are coming. Do we see God’s love in the mystery of life, in the mystery of pain and tragedy? The second coming of Jesus must be seen as our greatest hope for a remedy to all of the ills and pain and all that is wrong with the world. We know that God will not be outdone in showing His love for us as He leads us home to eternal life with Him. Life on earth is a preparation for eter-nal life. How do we use who we are and what we have to build up the common good of all? How do we see the glory of God in each other? November- Praying for All Deceased: November is traditionally the month we remember our deceased loved ones in a special way. As we pray and remember our loved ones may we pray for those who have no one to pray for them and may we remember those who are alone this coming holiday season. Sometimes a little kindness and encouragement can make a big difference to someone who has lost a loved one. 2nd Collection Next Sunday November 22, 2015: Collection for the retired sisters: This collection provides needed financial support for the religious sisters, now retired, who have served our Archdiocese in many different ways such as education, health care and social services. Please give as generously as you can in thanksgiving for the lifelong efforts of these devoted servants of the Lord.

NOTES FROM BARBARA

The current church year comes to a close next Sunday with the Feast of Christ the King. This feast celebrates the all-embracing authority of Christ as King and Lord of the cosmos. Christ the King is a relatively recent addition to the Church calendar. It was instituted in 1925, a time of increasing distrust of authority, by Pope Pius XI in his encycli-cal Quas Primas. He connected the increasing denial of Christ as king to a rise of secularism. At that time many Chris-tians, including Catholics, began to doubt Christ’s authority, even to the point of denying his very existence, as well as the Church’s authority to continue teaching in the name of Christ. Christ the King was instituted during this time when respect for Christ and the Church was diminishing through out the world. This feast is even more relevant to us in to-day’s world. Individualism has been embraced to such extreme in today’s society that for many the only authority is the individual self and the very idea of Christ as ruler is rejected in such an individualistic environment. As we prepare to celebrate this great feast let us remember the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians (2:10-11.) “That in the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those that are in Heaven, on earth and under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.” Do you know that one of the stained glass windows in our church is a representation of Christ as King? Can you guess which one? (Answer to do you know – The first window on the right as you face the front of the church.) All adult education classes resume next week. ADVENT WREATHS In preparation for Advent, Advent wreaths and candles will be on sale after all the Masses next weekend as well as on the First Sunday in Advent. The wreaths (including candles) are $12. A set of 4 candles is $4.00. NEW ALTAR SERVERS Training for new altar servers will begin on Wednesday at 4:00pm. All children in grade 4 and up are invited. If you would like to be an altar server and Wednesdays don’t work for you please email [email protected] and indicate the times that are better for you and I will work to find a time convenient for you. ALL LECTORS AND EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS The schedule for winter 2016 is ready and has been sent to you by email. If you don’t have email or you did not receive the email printed copies of the schedule are available in the sacristry. Please take note of the new schedule format. I am working on the electronic scheduling program and I will asking for your help. I hope to be able to generate the Spring schedule electronically. Thank you for your cooperation during this project. Thank you to all who attended the women’s retreat last week and thank you for your feedback. A special thank you to Antonia and Danielle for providing the music and to the staff who made the day run so smoothly.

STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE Sharing: Time Talent Treasure DEATH---REMEMBERING Our Church has taught us in Sacred Scripture the practice of prayer for the dead. “Therefore, (Judas Maccabeus) made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.” Section 1032 of the Catechism continues ‘From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also com-mends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead: Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.’ * November is the month set aside in our Church to focus on just these issues. The beauty and distraction of October is gone. The air turns colder and we turn inward for warmth and comfort. It is a good time to remember. While some-times we don’t remember why we came into a room or where our car keys are, those, who are important to us now and those who have gone before us, we don’t forget. We needed them then and they need us now. Whether alone or in one of our Church services, please remember all those you know who need prayers and also pray for those who have no one to pray for them. Stewardship Questions: Kathy Reilly 781-444-0862 email: [email protected] Catechism of the Catholic Church section 1032 If anyone needs a ride to a church service or wishes a home or Communion visit, please contact me.
