ANNUAL ARCHDIOCESAN CATHOLIC APPEAL
While many aspects of our life have come to a stands ll, the work of our diocesan and parish ministries con nues as we strive to meet the needs of those who are relying on our guidance and assistance. The sick and home-bound con nue to receive spiritual support and informa on over the phone from the Archdiocese’s Faith Community Nurses and Chaplains program. Our Pregnancy Help Centers con nue to provide resources for women facing crisis pregnancies. Those suffering from addic on s ll need support and guidance and many have greater need for counseling and spiritual support during this me of heightened anxiety.
Many thanks to those of you who have already supported it. As of June 19th, St. Bartholomew has pledged $76,620 towards our assessment of $32,320 and our goal of $103,526. The success of the Appeal is vital in funding the 51 central ministries that provide assistance to our parishes, schools, and communi es in a variety of ways. Every gi , regardless of the size, is meaningful and can make an impact. To learn more about the Catholic Appeal, or to make your gi online, please visit the new Appeal website at bostoncatholicap-peal.org, where you can also view the 2020 Catholic Appeal video.
FACE MASKS AVAILABLE - Are you a senior in need of a fabric mask?
Be Kind Needham is a 100% volunteer based organiza on dedicated to distribu ng masks to Needham’s most vulnerable popula on. If you are a senior or know of a senior ci zen in need of a mask please contact us at [email protected]. Quan es are limited. Please note that these are not medical grade masks but they can provide a level of protec on if you need to leave your home. All we ask in return is that you smile under your mask!
LIVE-STREAMED MASS - With the resump on of public Masses, we will plan to con nue to live-stream Mass each Sunday on our Facebook page here, as well as on our website. We will plan on streaming the 9:45 AM Mass on Sundays. The Mass will also be available a erwards for replay on both sites. Remember that you can also watch the Sunday or weekday Mass on Catholic TV online at www.catholictv.org, or on Comcast at 268 or Verizon at 296, or any me on demand at www.watchthemass.com.
A NOTE FROM FR. DEREK
Last weekend at all the Masses, I made an announcement at the end about signing up for Masses and its usefulness for contac ng people. In a couple of parishes in the Archdiocese in the last few weeks, there have been incidents of someone having been to a Mass who later tested posi ve for COVID-19. When you sign up for Mass online it does two things:
1. It helps us know how many people to expect. There are some people coming from other parishes that have either not started celebra ng Masses or are celebra ng outdoor Masses. I know I much prefer the air condi oning! By signing up we are able to get a sense of how big of a crowd to expect so we can know how many people we can let in who haven’t signed up.
2. If ever it should occur that we find out someone who had been at one of our Masses had tested posi ve, it helps us to contact people to let them know since we ask for your email address. Even if you haven’t signed up for a Mass, you can give us contact informa on when you come (or call the office on Monday), though that is never a requirement for coming to Mass. If we should discover that someone who has been here has tested posi ve, we would also put men on of that on our website (without any names), so you are encouraged to check back from
me to me.
I would take this opportunity to remind you also:
The dispensa on from the Sunday obliga on given by Cardinal Sean is s ll in effect, so nobody should feel as if they must return to Mass at this me.
Even if you have signed up, if you are not feeling well the day of the Mass you had intended to come to, especially if you have a fever, you should not come. It is important that we take the health and welfare of others into considera on.
Thank you to all of you for helping to ensure that our worship of God is safe, healthy, reverent and holy.

STAFFING AT THE RECTORY - Members of the staff come to the office for about two days each, so that there are not too many people in the building, yet there is someone there each day. During this me, however, I would ask you to conduct any business that you need by way of the phone or mail when possible in order to limit the number of people in the building. As you know, many business are doing “curbside pickup” right now. This seems the best way to func on at this me, for everyone’s well being. If you want to schedule a Mass inten on or need a Mass card, please call the rectory instead of stopping by. Mass cards can be mailed to you or can be brought out to your car at a convenient me. S pend payments can be mailed in or dropped through the mail slot in the front door. Thank you for your coopera on with this.
MONTROSE SCHOOL: ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2020 - At Montrose, we believe that girls are called to greatness. Our agile faculty pivoted to synchronous remote learning when schools had to close, and our community stayed connected as we reinvented tradi ons while protec ng the health and safety of every member. One benefit of our size? We are well equipped to welcome the whole community back to school, in person, in September. Check out the Montrose difference at montroseschool.org, or set up a virtual tour with Director of Admission Kelly Melley at [email protected]. Inspired by the teachings of the Catholic Church, Montrose is an independent day school for girls in grades 6-12.
WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER - "Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord." The Lord’s goodness dwells in our marriage. Open up the secret of His goodness by a ending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekends are Sep 12-13, 2020 in
Medway, MA and Oct 16-18, 2020 in TBD, NH. For more informa on, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at 800-710-9963 or visit them at h ps://wwmema.org/.
CONFESSION - For the me being, while we are s ll adjus ng to the new norms for going to Mass, the Sacrament of Confession will be offered in the crying room on Saturdays from 2:30 to 3:15. As always, you can also set up an appointment with Fr. Derek for the sacrament.
2020-2021 RELIGIOUS ED. REGISTRATION - Although the structure of the Religious Ed. program may be different due to the pandemic, we are
planning on providing religious educa on for all grades star ng in the fall and are developing flexible op ons that can be adjusted according to guidelines from the state and archdiocese. In March, we were planning to implement a new online registra on program (the one we used last year has some significant issues). Due to the office closures, that project has been delayed. We have both a printed and an online registra on form available, however all payments will need to be either mailed to or dropped off at the parish office. We appreciate your understanding with this inconvenience. We understand that at this me many are in financially uncertain circumstances. Please feel free to register now, and pay later (or contact us in the fall if financial assistance is needed).
h p://stbartholomew-needham.org/re-registra on/
ELDERS & THOSE MOST AT RISK - Once again, please remember to check in on the elders of our
community and those who might have underly-ing condi ons that make them most at risk for this coronavirus. If you know of someone who needs something, or you, yourself, are in need, please call the parish office.
OFFERTORY - Thank you so much to those of you who have been dropping off or mail-ing in your dona ons, and to those of you who have con nued, or are new to, dona ng online. Your support of the parish community is greatly appreciated. If you wish to donate online, you can do that by going to the parish website and clicking the “Donate!” icon or simply clicking here. I Know with the way the stock market is going, and with the pandemic, that these are uncertain mes, but every li le bit will help. Thank you.
LECTIO DIVINA - Lec o Divina, meaning "Divine Reading", is a special form of prayer that involves praying with scripture. Using a combina on of scripture, medita on and prayer, the Lec o Divina is a powerful way to increase the frui ulness of one's prayer, get more out of scripture and grow closer to God. Origina ng in early monas c communi es, the monks came to understand the spiritual benefits of spending me in quiet reflec on with scripture and we can experience the same blessings. Join us on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am via Zoom to learn more about the Lec o Divina and reflect on the upcoming Sunday Gospel. Please email Mike Dickson at [email protected] to reserve your spot.

THE HOBBIT: DISCOVERING GRACE AND PROVIDENCE IN BILBO’S ADVENTURES While we are all spending more me at home, we thought it would be fun to explore the faith through JRR Tolkien’s the Hobbit! Considering the role of grace and providence in the Hobbit will allow us to also discover God’s grace and providence in our own lives, even in, or perhaps especially in, these uncertain mes. This program, from Catholic Courses, is structured with a half hour video lecture and a half hour of discussion, both on Zoom. Class will be offered at 10am on Thursday and 7:30pm on Wednesday evening. Although it is not necessary to read the Hobbit (or watch the movies, rated PG-13), doing so may give greater insight in the course.
Please register here, so we can share the Zoom informa on with you!
