Year of Mercy Pilgrimage to National Shrine
Have you heard the story of the Little Red Hen. In
case you didn‘t: One day the Little Red Hen found
some grains of wheat and asked the duck, the cat
and the dog if they would help her plant them, but
they weren‘t interested, so she did it.
When the resulting wheat was ripe she asked
who would help her harvest it. No one would, so she
did it.
She then needed help taking the wheat to the
mill to be ground into flour, but once again no one
was willing to help
so she did it.
Next she
asked who would
make and bake
some bread with
the flour, but no
one would so she
did it.
When she
asked if anyone
would like some of
the fresh baked
bread to eat, they
all said YES, but
she said NO and
ate it herself.
P a r i s h e s
everywhere suffer from ―Little Red Hen
Syndrome‖. It‘s all to do with involvement or,
rather, a lack of it. That‘s why today and next
Sunday we invite all ministers and volunteers to a
morning of affirmation and reflection. We begin
with Mass at 10:15AM in the Holy Family Chapel
and then break into discussion to discern if we
carrying out our ministry and service as
enthusiastically and as readily as we can.
The Catechism defines what a parish is as
follows: ‗A parish is a definite community of the
Christian faithful established on a stable basis
within a particular church; the pastoral care of the
parish is entrusted to a pastor as its own shepherd
under the authority of the diocesan bishop. It is the
place where all the faithful can be gathered together
for the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. The
parish initiates the Christian people into the ordinary
expression of the liturgical life: it
gathers them together in this
celebration; it teaches Christ's saving
doctrine; it practices the charity of the Lord in good
works and brotherly love: You cannot pray at home
as at church, where there is a great multitude, where
exclamations are cried out to God as from one great
heart, and where there is something more: the union
of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity,
the prayers of the priests.‘ (Catechism of the
Catholic Church,
para. 2179)
We really do
have to think about
our parish not just as
a community, but as
a family. We were
baptized into the
wider faith family of
the Church at our
baptism, but both
sp i r i tua l ly and
physically we are
part of this smaller
unit within the
Church and the
diocese that we call
St. Barnabas.
This is where many of you will have grown
up; this is where you have your faith roots; this has
been, and continues to be, your faith family — just
as it is for everyone in the parish regardless of how
long we have lived here. We are family because we
were all reborn into it through the sacrament of
baptism.
We are family because we are spiritually
related - we are brothers and sisters of Christ. As
every family should we gather together to share a
family meal - the Eucharist. Our parish church is our
parish family home. And all of this has implications
for us in terms of our involvement in, and the
support we offer to this, our family.
The life of the Church depends on us and our
involvement. It will be what we make of it and
much of that will depend on the degree to which we
build up our ministries and volunteers.

#2. What Makes Me Happy
The purpose of tonight is to consider
the possibility that everything we need
in life is ultimately found in God.
Happiness, love, peace, purpose, and
security are all qualities that are found
in the lives of those who live
according to the ‗master plan.‘
As young Catholic men and
women, Confirmation candidates are
on a quest for identity and personal
significance. As the influence of their
peers increases, they continue to look
to the example of their parents to guide
them. However, this group is
extremely sensitive to any perceived
hypocrisy or inconsistency. Therefore,
finding and holding up authentic
models of faith (and acknowledging
the consequences of following the
wrong role models) is of paramount
importance.
Conversation After Class Who is the happiest person you
know? Why do you think he or she
is so happy?
Do you think it is possible to know
God personally?
Have you ever felt close to God?
Tell me about it.

O Lord our God, in your mercy and kindness, no thought of ours is left unnoticed,
no desire or concern ignored. You have proven that blessings abound
when we fall on our knees in prayer, and so we turn to you in our hour of need.
Surrounded by violence and cries for justice, we hear your voice telling us what is required . . .
“Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Mi 6:8). Fill us with your mercy so that we, in turn,
may be merciful to others. Strip away pride, suspicion, and racism so that we may seek peace and justice
in our communities. Strengthen our hearts so that they beat only
to the rhythm of your holy will. Flood our path with your light
as we walk humbly toward a future filled with encounter and unity.
Be with us, O Lord, in our efforts, for only by the prompting of your grace
can we progress toward virtue. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
