Free Adult coloring book for Macsby Charlie

I downloaded this one just for fun to try it. Lot’s of folks are into this new hobby. This free edition comes with 5 different coloring pages. The download offers many additional page sets with far more advanced images for a small fee. I spent a little time with the owl to learn the how to’s. Look’s to be A-OK. I don’t have a lot of time to spend on this hobby, but you may want to give it a try.It works ok with my Magic Mouse, but found it easier with my Wacom pad and pencil.

Wacom Intous CTH480 Pad and Pen

I’ve used a Wacom pad like this for many years in conjuction with my Photoshop activities and found it indispensable. It just plugs into a USB port (you can also order a wireless adaptor direct from Wacom).

from Charlie

For those of you heavily involved with your Mac, as I am, to learn all about your favorite computer and its capabilities, the missing manual is a must in your library. This one contains 877 pages of very informative, well written and easy to understand, Illustrated step-by-step how-to’s on any subject or procedure in using your Mac.

There’s a separate manual available for every version of OS X, all written by David Pogue, that you may be using, and my strong suggestion to those of you using older versions of OS X from Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite you can upgrade free to El Capitan, and I’d strongly urge you to do so to reap all the benifits and features this new OS X version can offer.

As a point of interest the missing manual published an article advising all the features available in the new Photos program. The manual itself now delves into all these new features in detail with easy to understand step by step procedures in utilizing them. The following URL opens the Photos publication in Safari as advised above for your review. Once opened this article can be saved as a PDF file for future reference by going to your Safari toolbar > File > Save as PDF...

Q: I use my 2009 Macbook Pro everyday. I've dropped it a couple times and the corners are dented. Been through 3 power supplies and need the 4th. Screen was replaced under warranty. Had the bottom replaced by a local company and about 1/2 of the screws fell out and disappeared. Card reader won't write. Still works though, so I'll keep it until it doesn't.

A: Sounds like my old Boy Scouts of America hatchet I got as a kid. I've replaced the handle three times & the head twice, but it's still my Boy Scout hatchet.

OS X Hidden Treasures: Quick Look

OS X is full of useful little features that are easy to miss or forget about. An easily overlooked feature in OS X is Quick Look. It offers a fast preview of what’s inside a file with many common file types, such as text files, images, audio, video, PDFs, Microsoft Office files etc.

To invoke Quick Look in the Finder, just select a File (to highlight the title) and press the Space bar. Want to focus on an image or document without the distraction of your desktop? Select a file and press Option-Spacebar to open the Quick Look view in full-screen view. in Quick Look you can easily ## # #forward the item by selecting# # # Various forwarding options ☛the Share button in the upper RH corner ➚

To close Quick Look, press the Space bar or press Escape, or click the window’s close button in the upper left.

Open any folder containing multiple images or documents and go to your Finder toolbar > Edit > Select All to highlight all the titles, then select the Quick Look icon in the toolbar. The first item in your folder will open - Or hold down the Option and Spacebar to see full screen size. If you select multiple files before invoking Quick Look, you can use the Left and Right arrow keys to cycle through your selectionsWith Quick Look open, you can click Folder > File > Open with to open the file in its default app. You can also click the Share button in the upper right to send the file to another app or service without fully opening it. If the file you’re previewing with Quick Look has multiple pages, you’ll see thumbnails on the right that you can scroll through using your mouse or trackpad, or by using the Page Up/Page Down keys (on a laptop, use Fn-Up Arrow and Fn-Down Arrow). Although Quick Look windows generally open to a useful size, you can resize the window by dragging any edge. If you select multiple files before invoking Quick Look, you can use the Left and Right arrow keys to cycle through your selections; there are also forward and back buttons that appear in the top left of the Quick Look window. Next to those buttons is a thumbnail button that displays the selected files in a grid of thumbnails. Click any thumbnail to focus on just that item. You can continue to interact with the Finder while using Quick Look, which means you can delete an unwanted file by pressing Command-Delete while previewing it. One interesting use of this capability is that you can use Quick Look to examine files in the Trash, which can’t otherwise be opened while they remain in the Trash. So if you want to recover a particular image among a bunch that you’ve trashed, Quick Look is a fast way to figure out which one to pull out.Quick Look is easy to master, and once you get in the habit of using it, you’ll be all the more productive on your Mac.

The New Mac Accessoriesby Charlie

Three new accessories, the Magic Keyboard and optional Magic Track Pad or Magic Mouse were recently introduced and now included with the new iMacs. They are lower and slimmer and newly powered with internal rechargeable batteries.

My new iMac came with the Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse. My Magic Mouse battery charge lasted 2 months, with long days (and sometimes nights) use, and I leave my iMac on 24-7. The battery recharged in one hour. The new Magic Keyboard is very lightweight and lies low on the desktop, and the new keys are a pleasure to type on... I love em both!

Apple Advises....Each Apple accessory automatically pairs with built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to provide a reliable, secure connection up to 30 feet away. Each accessory is smart enough to know when it’s not being used and manages power efficiently to extend battery life. A built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery removes the need for AA batteries, or any removable batteries for that matter. Simply connect the included Lightning to USB cable to your Apple accessory’s Lightning port. A full charge is completed thru the USB connected cable in about 2 hours, and provides enough power for about a month or more of usage.

See and read about all the new features...click below:

Apple Stores Installing Belkin iPhone Screen ProtectorMore info~Click on live link above

Although iPhone screens are generally quite durable, particularly if guarded by a case, some people like to add a screen protector too. But installing a screen protector can be a finicky and error-prone process that suffers from problems with alignment, air bubbles, and trapped dust. Apple and Belkin are trying to address these frustrations in Apple retail stores, where Apple employees will install screen protectors using Belkin’s proprietary ScreenCare+ Application System — a machine designed to perform perfect installations. The system works with the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, and 6s Plus, and offers two screen protector options: InvisiGlass and Anti-Glare.

Camera Info

This one’s for the folks that use cameras and similiar devices

Q: My question is for my new Christmas camera, but is probably applicable to my cell phone also. My camera will take up to a 64GB micro memory card. It can use either, SD or SDHC (high capacity). all specs being equal, does the SDHC card hold more than the regular SD card, since it is high capacity?

A: All SD cards can hold up to 2GB. The SDHC and SDXC can hold various capacities, and each card will have its maximum capicity printed on the card.

SD cards are 2GB max capacity.SDHC cards are up to 32GB max capacity.SDXC cards are SD type cards that have capacities larger than 32GB.SDXC Micro Cards are oversize and require an adaptor (furnished with the card) to plug in.

Google Passwords

Q A friend has a mid-2011 Mac Mini running OS X 10.7.5 with 2 GB RAM. She recently opened a Gmail account and I tried to set up her Apple Mail to access it. Went through all the usual steps but Mail keeps claiming her username and password do not match. We know they do because she can access Gmail via Safari using the same information. We tried clearing the Gmail information out of Mail, quitting Mail, rebooting the Mini, and starting afresh. Got the same result. Is there a chance that the older version of Mail (and OS X) could be the culprit? If so, would an upgrade to Mavericks or Yosemite solve the problem? I’m afraid El Capitan would not run satisfactorily with only 2 GB of RAM.

A As part of updated security, you must go into your Google account and create an application-specific password that you will use just forApple Mail accessing Gmail. (Newer versions of OS X build this new authentication model into Mail; your version is too old to know about that change.)

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=enhttps://support.google.com/a/answer/1032419?hl=en

There is a button somewhere in Google security settings that says “Use less secure passwords” or something like that but you shouldn’t use it.

How To Stop Autofilling URL AddressesI know what I’m searching for - Don’t try to outguess me!

by Charlie

I use Google as my Search tool and it drove me nutz autofilling my typed search address before I had a chance to type in what I wanted. Example: I wanted to type in the game Fantasy 5, I typed in Fa and it automatically finished it for me and typed in Facebook... Autofill was a constant aggravating behavior.

Safari toolbar > Preferences ... note that my Search engine is Google

1. Select this Google URL > https://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en and go to the lower right hand corner of the window and select Settings > Search settings. (Wiggle your cursor around until the title Search settings is underlined and then click it to open the Google Instant predictions window below).

2. If you’re having the autofill problem your selection will read:

3. Now select: •Never show Instant results...then go to bottom of screen and click Save

Autofill is no more!!!

APPLE SAUCE Remove Totiteck from Safari browser

by Charlie

My iMac was recently invaded by an unwanted adware (software app) named “Totiteck” that mysteriously and suddenly installed in my Applications folder.

When I clicked on the application it suddenly opened a window marked with Apple’sSystem Preferences icon and then asked to click on the Open tab to install further info. This smelled fishy to me so I clicked on the other tab in the app window“Uninstall Totiteck”, my Mac then sent a tab that advised, “Unable to uninstall this software app”. It was then I realized I had a unwanted software problem.I was able to do a web search and found the method to remove all traces of this nagging software, as it kept opening a window insisting I fill my information to complete the installation.

Manually delete all files dropped by the Totiteck adware

1. Navigate the Finder Menu bar and click on “Go“. Then, select “Go to Folder“2. Copy and paste, or type the following line in the field and press Enter on your keyboard:

/Library/LaunchAgents3. LaunchAgents folder should open at this point. Look for items with the following file name:• Totiteck.update.plist• Totiteck.AppRemoval.plist• Totiteck.download.plist• Totiteck.ltvbit.plist• .com. Totiteck.agent.plist• .com.SoftwareUpdater.agent.plist

4. Move each file to the Trash. 5. Go to a different folder again using procedure from Step 1 and copy and paste or type the following line:

~/Library/LaunchAgents6. Do the same process as in Step 3 and move each file to the Trash.7. 7. Next, we need to look at Application Support folder. Using the same method as above. Go to this

location:~/Library/Application Support

8. Find the same files as in Step 3 and drag them to the Trash.9. Go back to Apple Menu and then select Applications from the drop-down list.10. Delete the Totiteck Application (just in case it does still exist).

Now Restart your Computer

We're not talking about the spelling checker, and we're not talking about text substitution. We're talking, you start typing a word and the Mac finishes it for you. It's ideal when you're in a hurry, when you're not sure how to finish a word (is it “independance" or "independence"?), or when you're trying to solve a crossword puzzle. It works in all the standard Mac programs (TextEdit, Mail,Safari, Pages, and so on).

Once you've begun typing a word, press either F5 or Option-Escto produce the list of possible word completions shown here. If the Mac correctly anticipates the rest of the word, great; press Tab, Return, or the space bar to accept the suggestion, and then keep right on typing. If it guesses wrong, you can either select a different word in the list (using the mouse or the arrow keys), or tapEsc to ignore the suggestions and continue typing.

Picture servicesby Charlie Reich

I recently received a request to remove a large photograph from a frame, copy it (on my scanner) and produce a smaller 4” X 6” photo. Upon getting the photo home I soon discovered that my Epson scanner bed was for 8 1/2” X 11” paper and this photo was 11” X 14” and permanently mounted on a thick hard backing.

The following information is not an ad for Staples, just some info on how I got out of a dilemma - and worthy of your consideration if you have a similar need as seen above.

Staples has a large flatbed scanner that can copy and reproduce large posters. I took the 11” X 14” photo in, along with a small flash drive. They scanned this photo onto the flash drive for $1.99. I then asked if they could then this utilize this scanned image in creating a 4” X 6” photo on glossy photo paper, and received a positive response. They reproduced the photo on an 8 1/2” X 11” size of photo paper and were able to fit two copies of the photo on this one sheet of Supreme Gloss photo paper for $1.31.

The total cost for this project, tax and all, was only $3.52, plus the scanned image was on the flash drive from which the client could download into their computer’s Pictures folder, and be sent in an email or just viewed and used later if ever there was a need for another copy in the future.

PS: I also noticed, on a table near the Copy & Print counter, a bucket full of 3 foot Lightning cables ($12.95) used to connect iOS devices to host computers via a USB plug on the other end. They are available in red, blue, green, pink or purple that would stand out in your stash of standard black computer cables.

This space is open if anyone has Apple equipment to sell or give away. This really is your newsletter and we would like you to take advantage of it. Let me know what’s available, your asking price, and how you can be reached. Our ad prices are just right: free.

Dana’s tip for the day: Every time I go to write a tilde as in “mañana” I have to look up how to do it. This time I wrote it in notes, stickies and now in AppleSauce. Will I remember??? Who knows. Actually, it’s easy. Remembering how is the hard part. Hold the option key down and type and n - release the option key and type the n. The tilde appears above it. ñ ñ ñ Magic!!
