Reflection on the Gospel

By Fr. Mark Escobar, C.S.

Appearance to the Disciples in Jerusalem

The two disciples recounted what had taken place on

the road to Emmaus and how Jesus was made known

to them in the breaking of the bread.

As our nation continues to diversify in great propor-tions, some scholars reflect varied demographic impli-cations, particularly in the large cities . And among those challenges which they highlighted was the huge number of ‘illegal immigrants’ living in the city. Like in every nation and culture across the world, their sto-ries are diverse and their journeys seem to battle for greener pastures and a vision for the future that will make a difference in their lives.

It is in this context that the Emmaus story in today’s gospel allows us to reflect the kind of blueprint for the future. If the American dream is the magnet to mil-lions all over the world, Jerusalem at that time of Jesus was the priority of his ministry; the end point of his journey and the central focus for Luke’s resurrection appearances. In fact, Jesus keeps reminding his disci-ples about it.

Emmaus story is a journey of discovery; a kind of mission for the future addressed to the whole human race. Likewise, it is the new Exodus journey that evokes the future significance of being commissioned to interpret Jesus’ words and continue keeping his memory alive especially in the breaking of the bread.

If we trace back the location of Emmaus, which is seven miles from Jerusalem, it says that there is no certainty about it.. However, history tells us that this town had been the site of the battle won by Judas Maccabaeus in 165 BC against the forces of King An-tiochus IV. Jewish people continued to resist foreign domination like the Romans. Jesus had failed and the only thing left was militancy. A growing number of Jews joined the resistance movement until it broke out in open revolt in 66 AD. The Romans conquered them and proclaimed victors in war.

While on their journey, the two disheartened disci-ples are approached by the Stranger. The two disciples on the journey may well have been husband and wife, Cleopas and Mary (see Jn 109:25; Clopas there and Cleopas here, are the only times this very rare name is found in existent ancient sources. Christ walks beside them as they engage in deep discussion about the hor-ror of the arrest and execution of Jesus, their Master. Arriving in their destination, the two disciples invite the Stranger to be their guest.
