Pentecost Happy Birthday to the Catholic Church! Happy birth-

day to you, who are the body of the Church!

We’re all familiar with our own birthdays, and we cele-brate them because they mark the day of the year which we entered into this life. But did you know you have a second birthday? Because you are part of the body of the Church. Pentecost is the Church’s birthday, and yours as well. And like any birthday, it’s a cause for celebration. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means “50th day.” Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to celebrate the end of Passover. Jews celebrate the gift of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we, as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church. At Pente-cost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to under-stand one another. Others who were not so blessed, ac-cused those speaking in tongues of being drunk, but Pe-ter arose and addressed the crowd, explaining that it was only 9 o’clock, and that this phenomenon was not intoxi-cation, but rather this was the work of the Holy Spirit, prophesized in the scripture. Peter then called all those present to be baptized and about three thousand people were baptized that day. These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Parishioners are also invited to wear red on this day. Red decorations as well as celebrations re appropri-ate, similar to any other birthday, Special prayers are often said just for Pentecost.

Happy Birthday Church Family! Today is the great feast of Pentecost, which was the day the Apostles were so moved by God the Holy Spirit that they went out and preached the Good News of Je-sus to everyone - and 3,000 were baptized that day, so marking the beginning of our awesome Church Family. I see God the Holy Spirit powerfully working in you, our St. Anthony Family, through God’s Gifts of:

✞ Your deep devotion and love of our Lord;

✞ Your continual care and concern for one another;

✞ And your ongoing outreach, hospitality and evangeli-

zation to all of God’s children, no matter their back-ground or their needs.

Each person of our St. Anthony Family is a beautiful gift from God with so many gifts and experiences to share as we all grow together. Let’s affirm and empower each other as we continue the mission of Jesus here in High Ridge.

✞ How is God the Holy Spirit moving me and our parish

to minister today, this week, this year, maybe in a new way?

✞ To whom can I spread the Good News of Jesus and

our St. Anthony Family?

✞ What gifts have I/we been given to serve others and

grow our Church, the Body of Christ?

The Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-25

The Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kind-ness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus, have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

My Fruit - Full Prayers

Love so I may love. Joy to share a smile.

Peace to calm my fear. Patience to last a while. Kindness for all I meet. Goodness in all I do.

Gentleness and self-control And faithfulness to yo. Spirit, may these gifts

Grow ripe each day in me So that I can be a fruit-full branch

For Christ, the Living Tree.

Saint of the Week Servant of God Dorothy Day

Cofounder of the Catholic Worker (1897-1980)

Dorothy Day, who died on November 29, 1980, was widely regarded as the radical conscience of the American Catholic Church. She had spent her youth as an activist and journalist engaged in the great struggle for social justice. Following her con-version to Catholicism in 1927 - an experience prompted by the birth of a daughter - she struggled to find some way to combine her faith with her com-mitment to the cause of the poor. She found that path in 1932, following her meet-ing with a Frenchman, Peter Maurin. He encour-aged her to launch a newspaper, The Catholic Worker, to promote the social message of the Gos-pel. This gave birth to a lay movement based in “houses of hospitality,” combining voluntary poverty with the works of mercy - feeding the hungry, shel-tering the homeless. Day combined her charitable work with a radical critique of the social structures that give rise to so much poverty. Her deep belief in the sacredness of life caused her to oppose all war and violence, and she was regularly arrested for acts of civil disobedience. All the while her activism was rooted in a disciplined life of prayer and sacra-ment. Her cause for canonization was initiated in 2000, and she was named a Servant of God. In his speech before Congress in 2015, Pope Francis, cit-ing her among four “great Americans” who “offer us a way of seeing and interpreting reality,” praised her Commitment to justice and the cause of the op-pressed. “The greatest challenge of the day is: how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us.” — Dorothy Day

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His St. Anthony Family. A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus,

Prayer of the Week Pentecost Prayer

Open your hearts to the breath of God, His life is grafted to the souls that he touches; May a new people Rise from the waters Over which hovers the Spirit of your baptism! —Let us open our hearts to the breath of God For he breathes in our mouths More than we do ourselves! — Days of the Lord

Joke of the Week

“WHERE is my SUNDAY paper?!” The irate customer calling the newspaper office, loudly demanded to know where her Sunday edition was. “Madam,” said the newspaper employee, “today is Saturday. The Sunday paper is not delivered until tomorrow, on SUNDAY.” There was quite a long pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a ray of recognition as she was heard to mutter… “Well that explains why no one was at church either.”

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday Mass. This pro-gram is designed for children ages three through eight (third grade). Children’s Liturgy of the Word brings the Gospel to the children at their level of understanding. Through appropri-ately adapted Scripture texts, music, prayer, and activities that reinforce the Gospel mes-sage, the children have an opportunity to cele-brate their faith in a way that is joyful and rele-vant to their own young lives. The children are escorted out of mass by the program catechists after the Opening Prayer and return to mass at Offertory. For more information, contact Kathy Joslin at [email protected] or call 636-677-4868 ext. 118 or 636-677-1567.

Children Celebrating

Faith

The Missouri Senate passed a bill last night which includes cuts to the top individual income tax rate but does not include a state earned income tax credit (EITC) to benefit low- to moderate-income work-ers. Without this credit, many Missouri families will not share in these new tax cuts. Please contact your state senator and representative and let them know that you want to see a Missouri EITC to ensure that working families are not left behind in our state! As many as 500,000 Missouri families (including 600,000 children) are eligible for the federal EITC and would be likewise eligible for a state-based EITC. Policy experts on both sides of the political aisle agree that the EITC incentivizes work, stimulates economies, and can lift families from poverty. Due to the success of the federal EITC, twenty-six states and the District of Columbia have created state EITCs. Please ask your legislators to see that a state EITC is passed in these final days of the Missouri legisla-tive session.
