ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY ST. ANTHONY CONFERENCE
In the Gospel today we see how Jesus sent His Apostles out two by two. From the beginning of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, members visit in pairs “two by two”, those who are poor and needy in their homes. It is there, in the family setting, that Vincentians listen, offer humble advice, and render assistance.
Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of
St. Vincent de Paul? Leave a message at 815- 469-3750 x114 if you would like to join us!
TO OUR GENEROUS SVDP DONORS: We will now send out donation acknowledgments at the end of the year only, for your tax purposes. We sincerely appreciate your gifts and will use them judiciously to help the poor.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK
LIVING the
WORD
LIVING the
WORD
THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: TRUST IN GOD’S PROVIDENCE
Should we sell the house and beg for a living each day? Some people are called to do that heroic form of witness, but not all. It is prudent to plan for the future, yet we have to be careful not to let our possessions possess us. We have to use our blessings to help the poor and recognize that all that we have comes from God. Each of us are called to bear witness to our trust in God’s providence, but in our own way. FIRST READING The Lord took me from following the flock, and said to me, “Go prophesy to my people” (Amos 7:12-15). The 8th Century (BC) prophet Amos had no intention of becoming a prophet, as he announces in today’s reading. He was a shepherd and a tender of sycamore trees. He rejects the title of prophet (nabi in Hebrew), which referred to a professional class of seers or diviners who worked for the royal court. “Nabi” were prophets for hire who earned “their bread” by announcing a favorable word. Amos is an outlier, not a trained “seer”. Though he lives in the south kingdom of Judah, he announces devastating oracles against the north kingdom of Judah. SECOND READING
The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Eph 1:3-14). This reading weaves together images drawn from early Christian hymns and serves to remind believers of the blessings they have received by virtue of their baptism: the call to holiness, divine adoption, freedom from sin through Christ’s blood, revelation of God’s plan of
salvation, and faith in Christ bestowed on both Jewish believers and Gentiles. The Holy Spirit stands as the first installment of the inheritance of believers.
GOSPEL Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two (Mark 6:7-13). Like Amos, the Twelve whom Jesus sends on mission were busy about other careers before Jesus called them. They were set apart and received the authority to preach and expel demons. And sharing in Jesus’ authority, they were called to follow His example: “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as ransom for many.” Now Jesus sends them to preach repentance, giving them authority over unclean spirits. He then details what they are to bring or not to bring: no food, no sack, no money, only sandals and one tunic. The lack of supplies serves to illustrate that the kingdom of God is at hand: therefore, no provisions are necessary. REFLECTION Jesus sends out the Twelve “unarmed,” with no food, sack, or money. All they have is the authority over “unclean spirits” — the forces of sin, sickness, and death — that Jesus confers upon them. Their mission depends entirely on this, and it proves to be far more valuable than any material provisions. Likewise in the First Reading, we hear not only to Amos’ hostile reception by the priest Amaziah, but also of how unprepared he was for his mission as a prophet — though he had no prior prophetic experience, God sends him to deliver a very unwelcome message. Both readings seem to stress that prophets must rely entirely on God. So too, in our own lives, we sometimes find ourselves in the midst of tasks for which we feel completely unprepared. We can feel overwhelmed or in over our heads. But if we believe that these are tasks to which God has called us and for which God has sent us, then we ought also to believe that God has equipped us with what we need to accomplish them. Faith is the only provision that we need. Of course, faith is not as easily attained as food or a sack or money. You can’t buy it in a store or borrow it from a friend, but must receive it as a gift from God. God calls us and sends us out to do His will. We must have confidence that He will provide us with what we need to accomplish that will. This is given to us in our baptism and we can rely on it fully. When we feel we are in “over our heads”, we can cultivate the virtue of faith and take actions to rely on God for help.

Sipping On Grace BENEFIT TO SUPPORT WOMEN

Please check out Julie Carrick online and on You-Tube. She has a fabulous voice and is very inspirational. The evening should be a wonderful program for you, your family and friends. Mark you calendars and try to attend.
What is prayer? It is commonly held to be a conversation. In a conversation there is always an "I" and a "thou" or a "you." In this case the "Thou" is with a capital T. If at first the "I" seems to be the most important element in prayer, prayer teaches that the situation is actually different. The "Thou" is more important, because our prayer begins with God. CROSSING THE THRESHOLD OF HOPE We begin to pray, believing that it is our own initiative that compels us to do so. Instead, we learn that it is always God's initiative with us… CROSSING THE THRESHOLD OF HOPE It is a beautiful and salutary thought that, wherever people are praying in the world, there the Holy Spirit is, the living breath of prayer. It is a beautiful and salutary thought to recognize that, if prayer is offered throughout the world, in the past, in the present and in the future, equally widespread is the presence and action of the Holy Spirit, who "breathes" prayer in the heart of man in all the endless range of the most varied situations and conditions. — DOMINUM ET VIVIFICANTEM

Weekly Gospel/Homily Reflections…

J esus' instructions to the apostles are very specific. He
repeats the mission that they are sent to preach and to share His authority to heal and to drive out demons. Jesus sends them in pairs, establishing His mission as something to be done as a community. Jesus continues to send us into the world as His disciples. But like the first disciples, we are not sent alone and are given what we need. Jesus has given us the community of the Church, which strengthens our life of discipleship. The Christian message can only really be proclaimed in and through the community of faith that is the Church. In our work with others, we build this community of faith and can invite others to share in it.
QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK:
For Adults: What good news of Jesus can you share with others this week?
For Children: How have you shared what you know of Jesus with others?
