READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: WHAT DOES A FAMILY LOOK LIKE?

Like any family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph had their own complications and fears to deal with, but they were always grounded in the loving faithfulness of their covenant with God and one another. FIRST READING “As long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the LORD” (Sirach 3: 2-6, 12-14). A Greek ideal was to live an ordered life which gives public witness to the values that were the core of one’s belief. Sirach combines this ideal with traditional respect for parents and the family. Together these ideas produce this beautiful appeal for a family life in which one’s parents are treated with great respect. Although this portrait is idealized, it also shows signs of realism. It acknowledges that the situation might arise in which one’s parents are no longer mentally alert. Nevertheless, care for parents is a sacred responsibility. SECOND READING We are children of God when we believe in the name of God’s Son, Jesus Christ (1 John 3:1-2, 21-24). Saint John speaks of the incredible dignity that the Lord has bestowed upon us. We are not slaves or servants, we are children of God. Yahweh treats us with the same respect and honor that He treats Jesus, His only-begotten Son. He calls us to share in His love and His mission here upon the earth, and in His glory in heaven. The promise of heaven is that we will be like the One whom we love. We will not only share in the likeness and image of God, we will truly be one with Him. The way we know we are

God’s children is that we keep His commandments. We must live moral and giving lives. The commandments are not rules that imprison us but guidelines that help us to choose what is right and good, virtue and generosity (especially if we live the greatest law, law of love). GOSPEL Joseph and Mary find the lost Jesus in the temple in the midst of teachers (Luke 2:41-52). The Holy Family are good and observant Jews. They travel to Jerusalem for the Passover. A Jewish boy was considered to be a man when he was around 12 years old. Luke is saying that when Jesus knew what it meant to be a man, He also knew that He was God. That is why this is the first moment that Jesus proclaims God to be His Father. This scene might also be a preparation for Mary, His mother. Jesus was lost for three days when He was about His Father’s business. Later, when Jesus died for our sins and was buried for three days, Mary would have to trust that He was about the Father’s business again. REFLECTION What does a family look like? Single parents, a couple with one or more children, extended family or friends, all of the above? The Holy Family consisted of Jesus, His birth mother and His birth mother’s husband. The Gospel offers one of the few glimpses we have into their life together. The teenage Jesus gives his parents a scare. Their response is typical of any frightened parent: they retrace their steps and, filled with anxiety, scurry to find Him. Mary’s frustration is clear: “Why have You done this to us?” Jesus answers like many teens who wonder why their parents worry. Their family was complicated. He was the Son of God. Jesus is learning to respect His situation. Hannah’s prayers for a child were answered, unlike others who pray and do not conceive. Remember those families today. Such pain paralyzes some. Others find life through adoption, friendship or outreach. Not all family relationships give life. Healing only comes through time. Whatever our experience of human family, we are children of God, called to love one another with a love that makes our belonging to the human family visible. Healing, life-giving, unconditional love takes a lifetime to learn. We too need to advance in wisdom, age, and favor before God and others. What does your family look like? Thank those who make your experience life-giving. Seek healing where family has brought pain. Grow in love, however you can, so others can know the light of hope we are celebrating at Christmas. Dedicated to the Lord by baptism, may we advance in wisdom, age and love.

What does it mean to remain sinless? It means living your life according to the moral principles of the Gospel which the Church sets before you. HOMILY AT CAMAGUEY, CUBA, 1998 Do not be afraid, I say, because great courage is required if we are to open the doors to Christ, if we are to let Christ enter into our hearts so fully that we can say with St .Paul, “The life I live now is not my own; Christ is living in me” (Gal 2:20) . You need courage to follow Christ, especially when you recognize that so much of our dominant culture is a culture of flight from God. ADDRESS AT VESPERS, ST. JOSEPH’S SEMINARY, 1995 Be generous in giving your life to the Lord. Do not be afraid! You have nothing to fear, because God is the Lord of history and of the universe. Let grow in you the desire for great and noble projects. Nourish a sense of solidarity: these are the signs of the Divine action in your hearts. Place at the use of your communities the talents which Providence has lavished on you. The more ready you are to give yourselves to God and to others, the more you will discover the authentic meaning of life. God expects much of you! MESSAGE FOR WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS, 1996

Weekly Gospel/Homily Reflections…

Page Ten — December 27, 2015 Saint Anthony Catholic Church

I n today's Gospel we hear about a situation of anxiety

and even conflict in the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Situations such as these are common in young people's lives. Your desire for independence has the potential to create conflicts between you and your parents. God wants us to respect and honor our parents by obeying them, even when we disagree with their decisions. When we find it difficult to honor and obey our parents, we can remember that Jesus showed His parents honor and respect, and we can ask Jesus to help us do the same.

For Adults: Jesus was obedient to His parents, even though He was the Son of God. Why is obedience so important? Is it something you struggle with?

For Children: Why is it important to obey our parents? Why is it important to obey God?

CATECHIST CORNER To whom does the Fourth Commandment

refer, and what does it require of us? The Fourth Commandment refers in the first place to one's physical parents, but also to the people to whom we owe our life, our well-being, our security, and our faith. What we owe in the first place to our parents namely love, gratitude, and respect should also govern our relations to people who guide us and are there for us. There are many people who represent for us a God-given, natural, and good authority: foster or step-parents, older relatives and ancestors, educators, teachers, employers, superiors. In the spirit of the Fourth Commandment we should do them justice. In the broadest sense, this commandment applies even to our duties as citizens to the State.

What place does the Family have in God's Plan of Creation?

A man and a woman who are married to each other form, together with their children, a family. God wills that the love of the spouses, if possible, should produce children. These children, who are entrusted to the protection and care of their parents, have the same dignity as their parents.
