Clergy News

A Hymn Sing for Sunday 5:30 Evening Service,
July 2
The last Hymn Sing was so much fun that we are
doing it again. Erik Apland will lead on piano. He
has some hymns to suggest, but most of the
hymns come from the congregation. Anything in
the 1982 Hymnal is fair game; including the
National Songs (e.g.#716-720 and the Navy hymn
#608). It is July 2nd after all. The Reverend
Joanna White will officiate and offer prayers.
Volunteers Needed
Cooking for the Light House Shelter
St. Anne's and the Men's Huddle provide and serve
the evening meal at the Light House the first
Wednesday of every month. After serving the
dinner we get a plate and sit down with the shelter
guests to eat and converse. Come join us at the
Light House if you would like to help.

Family Cooking at the Light House Shelter
Family cooking at the Light House Shelter is held
the 3rd Monday of each month. We are always
looking for volunteer families to come prepare,
cook, and serve a meal for approximately 60
residents. This is a wonderful opportunity for the
whole family to volunteer together and lovingly
serve our community. Children 11 years old and
over are welcome to participate in family cooking.
Each month we need 2-3 families to prepare a
main course, side dishes, and dessert.
Signing up for St. Anne’s family cooking at the
Light House Shelter is now easier than ever – I’ve
moved to using SignUpGenius to help with
managing and scheduling. The link to sign up is

participating or volunteering please contact Jill

News & Notes A New Full-Time Associate Priest for St. Anne’s
The Rev. Dion Thompson has accepted the call to
become St. Anne's Associate Priest for Pastoral
Care. Rev. Thompson will join our staff sometime
in mid- to late-August and will be a full-time
member of our staff. Dion brings great gifts and
passion for pastoral care as well as experience and
interest in other areas of priestly ministry in the
parish. Please read more about Dion Thompson
below and join me in keeping him and his family
in our prayers as he prepares to join us and as he
brings his ministry in his current parish to a close.
Rev. Thompson currently serves as Interim Rector
of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Darlington,
Maryland. Before travelling up to the banks of the
Susquehanna River, he served for 8½ years as the
Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Holy
Covenant in Baltimore City. The Rev. Thompson is
passionate about studying God's word,
proclaiming the Christian message and caring for
God's people. So, it's no surprise to him that the
Holy Spirit has brought him to serve in the pastoral
ministry of St. Anne's.
Rev. Thompson received his M.Div. from the
General Theological Seminary in New York City in
2007 and was ordained to the diaconate in June
2007. He was ordained to the priesthood on Jan.
26, 2008, the feast day of Timothy and Titus,
companions of St. Paul. Before taking up the
priest's collar, he enjoyed a 20-year career in
journalism, working for The Baltimore Sun, The
Miami Herald and The Hartford Courant. He
started his career in Hartford as a night police
reporter and went on to cover a wide variety of
news beats, including the state prison system in
Connecticut, the neighborhoods of Little Haiti and
Liberty City in Miami, and the state legislature in
Maryland. Born in Los Angeles, California, he holds
a B.A. in English from California State University,
Long Beach, and an M.F.A. in Professional Writing
and Publishing from the University of Southern
California. His novel, Walk Like A Natural Man, was
published in 2003. During the past year he has
written several articles for the Episcopal News
Service and the Episcopal Journal. He and his wife,
Jean, also a former journalist, have been blessed
with 31 years of marriage and have one son,
Tevin. Hobbies include playing guitar, bike riding,
losing himself in the Greek New Testament and
listening to music, everything from Blind Willie
Johnson to Mozart and John Coltrane. Having been
baptized in the waters of the U.S.C. Trojans and
the Los Angeles Lakers, he asks that you refrain
from extolling the alleged virtues of the Notre
Dame Fighting Irish and the Boston Celtics.
William Bell’s Retirement
At the end of July, William Bell will retire as one of
St. Anne's clergy. Senior Warden Josiah Dykstra is
collecting donations from anyone wishing to
contribute to a cash purse for William in honor of
William's faithful service. Checks may be made
payable to Josiah Dykstra and mailed to P.O. Box
142, Severn, MD, 21144, or electronically by
PayPal to [email protected]

Partners in Mission in Guatemala
The Partners in Mission in Guatemala are so
pleased to report that our Stove Campaign is
complete after a nine-year period of providing
materials, transportation and training to our
brothers and sisters in Guatemala. Thanks to the
tremendous generosity of St. Anne's parishioners
and friends, our stove campaign will provide 90
stoves to the Guatemalan communities in 2017,
which is sufficient to complete the stove program.
We will move toward providing latrines in years
ahead as our next major health initiative.
A mission team is headed to Guatemala in mid-
July and would be very pleased to take any used
laptops that you are willing to donate. We are also
interested in taking basketballs to the local
elementary school, as they have recently begun a
sports curriculum using basketball as an organized
activity. As always, your tremendous support is
greatly appreciated!
A Year of Getting to Know God through the Bible
Join us for our 5:30 PM service on Sunday and in
thirty minutes a week you can get to know God
and the Bible better. In the course of a year, you
will come away with an understanding of who God
is, what the Bible really says, and why the Bible is
so important to us as a source for understanding
who we are too. We also have a webpage that
contains additional resources for deeper
exploration and understanding:

bible/.

If you are considering a role in Stephen Ministry,
now is the time to act! We train new Stephen

a confidential, safe, and loving manner, grounded
in Christ's love for us. We form a community of
dedicated, skilled, trustworthy and faithful leaders
and ministers who work to support each other in a
structured, prayerful environment. After 50 hours
of training, Stephen Ministers have the skills,
knowledge and confidence to care for people who
are suffering. If you would like to be considered
for this vital ministry, please contact Rev. William
