Hello spring, hello sun.Tomorrow is the first day of

spring, and a new festival in St. Albert is welcoming the changing season by urging you to stretch your mind along with your body.

Shine Lifestyle and Yoga Festival runs this weekend at the Enjoy Centre, offering plenty of yoga sessions, from gentle to moderate to intense, not to mention classes mixing yoga with spinning or high-intensity interval training.

But it’s about mental, spiritual and environmental health as well as physical health, organizers say, as they bring in speakers to discuss everything from self-empowerment to stress management to improving family relationships. Other talks include creating ethical businesses, protecting the planet and enriching the life of your pet.

Organizer Caroline Stewart is a yoga instructor and former owner of Wellness Within, a yoga studio and spa at the Enjoy Centre. She was

involved in putting on another event, the Edmonton Yoga Festival, last fall.

“I loved the festival but I really wanted to move away from just yoga,” Stewart says. “It’s a great catch-phrase but there’s so much more. Sometimes the philosophy and the self-development gets missed.” So Stewart, along with her business partner, Tyler Dianocky, started planning Shine.

Sitting on stools at a tall table at the Enjoy Centre’s café earlier this week, the sun beaming in through the high glass walls and ceiling, the St. Albert partners took turns talking, picking up where the other left off.

Dianocky says his favourite part is “having people who are really passionate about what they’re doing

and giving a place where people can come and experience their community.”

“And community was our central tenant,” adds Stewart. “How do we connect community, not just grabbing people from far away who are really well known in the yoga

community or in self-help or personal development?” Stewart says they’re aiming to provide a place “where you can actually see and physically touch and talk to somebody who’s local.” Speakers, instructors and vendors are coming from in

and around St. Albert. The fest kicks off on Friday,

and one opening event can only be described as intense: 108 sun salutations to welcome spring. A sun salutation is a sequence of yoga

moves. It may sound light and airy—what can be more pleasant than greeting the sun?!—but don’t be fooled: it involves standing, reaching high, bending low, lunging and lowering yourself into a plank. Now hold that plank. Then do it again, 108 times. Stewart says it’s a traditional way for yogi to recognize the changing seasons, but it’s also a real challenge.

It may not be the only challenge this weekend. It’s a new festival, and the organizers aren’t afraid to ask for patience. They’ve even posted a warning on their website that everything might not go off perfectly.

Dianocky laughs, saying they want to be genuine. “That’s normal for anything, everything. Nothing always goes as planned.”

Any problems can count as lessons learned for the next time; they’re already planning a follow-up festival for November, with ambitions for later expansion to other communities.

BARRY BAILEYSt. Albert Leader

There is a new vibe in downtown St. Albert. It’s subtle, but it’s there and growing. On a sunny Saturday morning, young families are out and about with their strollers; couples are checking out new restaurants and shops or visiting old favourites; and even the teenagers are on hand, headed for the scooter store. When the Farmers’ Market, Art Walk, Snowflake Festival or Rock’n August is on, downtown explodes with activities and visitors.

Back in the 1980s, council of the day enabled a Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan bylaw… yes, DARP. It’s undergone various iterations and variations since then and continues to be revised today with plans for street alignments, new buildings, condos and a different “angle” on street parking. The basic premise is that a vibrant and growing downtown is a good thing for business and citizens alike. A litany of studies will tell you that a dynamic downtown core is critical and even transformative for a healthy city. It’s complicated. Or is it?

What seems to be driving the change in downtown are the imaginative and committed entrepreneurs opening their businesses on and around Perron Street, supported by Economic Development, the Chamber of Commerce and, perhaps most importantly, the idea of “shopping local.”

“The Chamber of Commerce would do

anything to help the downtown grow and prosper,” states Chamber President and CEO Lynda Moffat. “We’ve committed a lot of time and resources towards the promotion of downtown; we have the perfect opportunity here. We’re not giving up. The Perron District is just too important to our city.”

Wheelz Skoots & Apparel at 15 Perron Street opened just three weeks ago. Owners Sean and Silvia Danchuck, along with trusted advisors/sons Seth and Sawyer, recognized a business opportunity in the burgeoning recreational and competitive world of scooters. Without a truly dedicated scooter shop in the Edmonton Capital Region, St. Albert-raised Danchuck found Perron Street, not Edmonton, to be the easy answer to the question “Where do I open shop?”

“The Perron District is growing and looking for fresh blood and ideas, and I love the buzz down here,” says Danchuck.

“It’s phenomenal, young and growing. There’s no better place to bring a new business like ours built around a young demographic.”

The recent opening of several new professional services and retail businesses downtown would support Danchuck’s assertion of growth in the area. Eateries such as the Vinyl Rock Café and Blue

Rare Steak & Bar; esthetic services Refined Massage Therapy, Shear Static and Tracy Marie Beauty Inc.; and boutique clothing store, Posh & Bonny, all contribute to the eclectic mix of relatively new faces in the downtown business district. With a grand opening

planned for Saturday, March 21, Danchuck hopes to take advantage of the city’s pop-up patio program, designed to assist Perron District merchants, and hold a small Scooter Jam demo to go with the free hot dogs and pop.

“We all have to be on the same page in order for downtown to become a

destination,” says Joan Barber, manager of business retention and expansion for the city, “and to attract a critical mass of people. We can help, the Chamber can help, but a grass-roots effort led by the businesses themselves is the key to further success.”

Shopping local is obviously a key element, especially in a community the size of St. Albert. Nowadays one can find almost anything on their shopping list right in town. Ideally a dynamic downtown shopping experience will attract shoppers and visitors from outside our city as well. St. Albert resident Jennifer McCurdy took on the challenge of “Shop St. Albert First” for an entire year in 2013 and discovered that it didn’t take long to master.

“I got to know various shop keepers and they got to know me,” says McCurdy. “The level of service, especially at the clothing stores, became amazing. Sometimes I had to get a bit creative to stay local, but it became easier and a real habit as time went on. I still always look local first and it feels good supporting my hometown merchants!”

Perhaps Wheelz co-owner Sean Danchuck sums it up best when he talks about downtown becoming a walking, shopping, outdoor boutique mall. He and many of the downtown businesses are keen to breathe fresh ideas and life into the area, creating a “Whyte Ave buzz”, St. Albert-style. Good vibrations indeed.

Party on the hill: 150th celebrations gear upMARCIE GRAYSt. Albert Leader

A big white tent, elegant hors d’oeuvres and classy cocktails. Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools are planning to finish their 150th-anniversary celebrations in style with a gala on Mission Hill in June.

They’re putting the word out that half of the 300 tickets are already sold.

One retired educator doesn’t need an event reminder. Gladys Laflamme, 96, has a memory almost as long as her deep roots in faith-based education. She was quick to dig into her savings to buy a table for 8 for $1,200.

“I guess I was the first one to buy a table, because the minute I read that, I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll do it for my dad, T.D. Cunningham.’”

Cunningham was one of the people who helped build Catholic education in the St.

Albert region, serving as a trustee for 40 years, overseeing one-room school houses, the construction of new schools and the amalgamation of districts.

His connection to Catholic schooling reached back to when he was six and his mother died, Laflamme says. The Grey

Nuns, who had introduced formal classes to St. Albert when they opened their convent on Mission Hill in 1864, took Cunningham in, raising and educating him.

Later he married and became a farmer near Morinville. As

a child, Laflamme remembers she and her family didn’t have much, but her parents were quick to put what they did have into education.

“When I was in grade 7, I told my dad I wanted to be a teacher. He said, ‘Gladys, you want to be a teacher, you will be a teacher.’ It was in the early ’30s, and it was hard

times. He paid my tuition with vegetables and meat. We didn’t have any money. We had a farm; we had our own beef and he raised wheat, oats and barley. And of course my mother had a big garden. He paid them with that.”

As a teacher and later a principal in High Prairie, Laflamme made sure her six children knew the value of an education. Four of them followed in the family footsteps, filling roles as teacher, trustee, bus driver and maintenance supervisor for Catholic school boards in St. Albert and beyond.

Laflamme and her surviving children and 90-year-old sister will gather around her table at the gala to raise a glass to the man who started this legacy.

“I hope they have champagne,” she says with a laugh.

School trustee Dave Caron says 150 years

of Catholic education is a landmark event that deserves a proper party. The big tent will be hoisted near the historic building affectionately known as the little white school, completed in 1948.

“It’s at the base of Seven Hills, a place that Father Lacombe would have looked out over, just as education was being established in the region,” Caron says.

Along with the fashionable setting and fancy food, there’ll be a silent and live auction, with items such as a VIP trip to the Vatican in Rome and the lease of a new Volvo. Proceeds go toward enhancing educational and spiritual opportunities for students.

Danny Hooper, well-known local entertainer, auctioneer and musician, will emcee the June 13 event.

Praying for a divine dayMARCIE GRAYSt. Albert Leader

It’s a field trip for the record books.Six thousand students will flock to

Mission Hill in June for a special Mass to give thanks for 150 years of Catholic education in the St. Albert region.

Students of all ages will be roaming the hill, from knee-highs to high-schoolers, from all 16 schools belonging to Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools.

The Mass is the culmination of a year of events, during which schools have taken turns holding a total of 150 activities. Some have been light-hearted; for example, École Father Jan held an old-fashioned duck race on Mission Hill. Students at several schools played “one-room schoolhouse”, dressing in “olden days” clothes (dresses and aprons for girls, rolled-up pants and suspenders for boys) and learning recess games their great-grandparents likely played (marbles, hopscotch and cat’s cradle).

Other projects have seen students helping out in the community, listening to seniors’ stories and creating time capsules. Schools have held “no technology” days, as well as tech-only days. All the events have aimed to explore faith-based education yesterday, today and tomorrow. April and May will see Neil M. Ross, Morinville Community High School, Richard S. Fowler and St. Gabriel celebrating.

There’s no doubt the events take a lot of imagination and work, but when it comes to logistics, the June 11 Mass will be the biggest, hands down. It calls for a huge outdoor, temporary amphitheatre. At the bottom of the hill, a stage with a massive awning. Seats for invited guests, including the public. (Everyone is welcome.). On the hillside, the students, plus 650 staff. Giant speakers so everyone can hear.

Organizer Louis Kloster reels off the details, from the heavenly to the very human.

“To serve Communion to that many people means we need to borrow a lot of ciboria, the bowls that hold the consecrated hosts, we need 40 of those (ciboria), and we need enough Eucharistic ministers to bring Communion on the hill. You have to order all these hosts beforehand—they’re made by some convent in Calgary,” he says, adding they’re changing things up by having ministers walk out to the congregation. The hosts—the bread representing the body of Christ—will suffice. Serving, and not spilling, the blood of Christ—wine or perhaps grape juice—while walking uphill on uneven ground will be tricky.

Down-to-earth matters include buses, temporary toilets, and a first-aid station. Timing the morning mass so students in nearby schools can walk to the hill, yet finishing in time to match

the kindergartners’ schedule.

Kloster says it helps that the school district has done this once before, by holding a somewhat smaller Mass on Mission Hill in 2011.

“The Mass for us as Catholics, we call it the source and summit of our Christian life. So even though it seems to be taking a lot of energy and it’ll cost a fair bit of money to make

it happen, it really is a highlight for our district to be celebrating as one,” he says. The Archbishop of Edmonton, Richard Smith, will preside.

The only thing out of their control now is the weather, Kloster says, but a rain-out was a concern four years ago. “We ended up having a glorious day and, if anything, students were getting burned in the sun,” he chuckles wryly, “so we are definitely praying for a favourable day.”

“It really is a highlight for our district to be celebrating as one.”

Municipalities across the globe are grappling with how to provide

safe and affordable housing for their citizens. International reports show that increased wealth is being generated primarily in cities, and, as a result, people are migrating by the millions for improved social and economic opportunity. We also see this trend in Canada, specifically with interprovincial and international migration to Alberta’s economic hubs. Population growth and aging baby boomers are now creating pressure on housing stock and, worldwide, many cannot afford market rates for their dwelling for a whole variety of reasons. One might presume the need for affordable housing exists more so in depressed and under-educated communities fraught

with social issues and crime. In fact the opposite is most commonly the case. In affluent municipalities, access to education, high-paying industries, and high employment rates influence real estate markets, base income levels and fiscal policies. This creates an environment where only the wealthiest can afford to live and fully participate in all societal activities. In turn this systemic exclusion of those unable to engage leads to untapped potential, inadequate innovation, limited engagement and reduced productivity overall.

Many of the wealthiest nations by GDP and per capita income have developed affordable housing models to address critical housing shortages and cultivate societal engagement. Singapore, one of the world’s most affluent countries, is deemed a leader in dealing with affordable housing successfully, as, culturally, public housing is not generally considered a sign of poverty or lower class. Over 80 per cent of Singaporeans live in publicly owned dwellings. Here in St. Albert, the City is also working on housing strategies and action plans, although this is a big community issue and not just the city’s. And with recognition of the need for more affordable housing options comes a question of who needs affordable housing first and foremost. Seniors? Workers

earning minimum wage? The displaced? Victims of abuse? Younger people just starting out? I say they’re all deserving, and in all countries where affordable housing strategies have been most effective, public funding was a crucial element. While governments need to commit resources, we all play a role in building a prosperous and sustainable community where investors, entrepreneurs and employees want to, and can, live and work. Where affordable housing options are continually limited and where community attitudes may be less welcoming to different walks of life, our city’s attractiveness is diminished to those looking to build a life here or stay here. And this has significant economic impacts—not just social implications.

WHEREIS THIS?

Here’s a photo of a building or landmark around St. Albert. Can you figure out where it is?

Last Week: East Side Mario’s

An interesting discussion took place at the council meeting Monday night—one that no one saw coming. Back lanes, back

alleys… however you reference them, they caused quite a debate. And it was all over information in a report received from the St. Albert Housing Society.

In a time where affordable housing is especially important, one must ask what new development practices the community is willing to consider. It has been 50 years since a back lane has been built in St. Albert. In fact, only 6 km of back lanes were ever built here.

A decision was made by a council some time ago to not allow these lanes in our engineering standards. This created a unique St. Albert, one we are all proud of. A city that has garnered us many accolades and awards for building and creating a vibrant, safe and livable community.

Now we hear we need to change those standards. We need to create more affordable housing. To give developers options so they have a variety of housing types and styles. But at what cost?

Allowing lanes would certainly be a welcome change to the many developers and builders. They could create more houses per acre, less costly houses, and more affordable neighbourhoods. And for some, much more profit. But at what cost?

This in essence would result in a third road being build. A road that needs to be maintained. And the cost of this maintenance would be placed squarely on the City of St. Albert, who would then transfer it to the taxpayer. Maintaining back lanes is a North American challenge. Just look at our neighbours in Edmonton and the ongoing struggles they have with theirs. Never mind the cost of keeping the roadways clear in the long winter. Why would we consider back lanes when other communities are removing them?

Councillor Brodhead challenged the developers at the meeting. Be creative and innovative in building affordable housing within our engineering design standards, he said. We agree with him. When many ideas are being re-engineered, why look at old practices to solve new challenges? Let’s step out of the box, find new solutions and maintain the history on which our community was built.

Sink Hole Causes Disruptions

On March 16, City of St. Albert crews responded to a water main break adjacent to the east side of City Hall, along St. Anne Street. As a

result of the water main break, St. Albert Place was evacuated. All staff, library patrons and other visitors had been asked to leave as there was

no water to the building. The water main break had caused a sink-hole along St. Anne Street requiring that street’s closure, approximately from Perron Street to St. Thomas Street. A performance scheduled

for the Arden Theatre on March 17 had to be postponed until March 18 due to the disruptions. St. Albert Place reopened the

morning of March 18 for regular operations.

On March 21 the Cosmopolitan Club of St. Albert is hosting an evening of unparalleled entertainment and dancing featuring Dash Riprock , Mathew Potter and Lenny and the Cats. Tickets are just $20 for this Diabetes fundraiser, it taks place at the St. Albert Community Hall. Call 780-994-6050 for tickets and more information.

Housing Diversity Action Plan

Revisions to Animal Bylaw

This report returns the final Housing Diversity Action Plan after being originally introduced as the Housing

Diversity Work Program on October 20, 2014. The Action

Plan has been amended to ref lect the feedback from

Council, internal departments, and external stakeholders.

Council voted 4 -3 in favour of deleting any reference to lot

designs with rear lanes.

In October 2014 Council passed a motion directing Administration

to bring forward amendments that would see all outdoor rinks

designated as off-leash areas when not otherwise in use for

recreational activities when not otherwise in use for recreational

activities. Administration has drafted an appropriate Bylaw that accomplishes that direction and is

recommending that it passed.

“This is a positive move for the dog owners and Fido as it provides more options for recreational use.”

— Cathy Heron

Residents with dogs are now free to use these locations as

off leash areas when applicable. The intent of this change

is simply to open up another option for responsible

pet owners.

Administration develop any necessary Guiding Principles, Terms of Reference, or Bylaws to establish a Social Planning

and Affordable Housing Advisory Committee for Council’s consideration

by August 31, 2015.

“I commend you on the thoroughness of this report. I do find it unsettling that not all the feedback that was captured was not acted upon.”

— Sheena Hughes

“I challenge the development companies to be creative and innovative enough to build affordable housing within our engineering design standards.”

— Wes Brodhead

“I brought forward this proposal as a response to the concerns that I have heard from residents regarding the changes brought

forward in the new animal bylaw.”

— Tim Osborne

The St. Albert Leader headed over to the Central Social Hall to see how they were celebrating St. Patricks Day on Tuesday, March 17. We found many a friendly face sharing the luck of the Irish. From pints of stout to bangers and mash, a good time was had by all.

Cabinets for any Room in Your Home fromDo-It-Yourself to Complete Renovations

With spring just around thecorner, it’s time to get cleaning!I’m feeling energetic, perhaps

because of the extra hour ofdaylight we are now getting ormaybe it’s the warmer weather.Regardless I’m motivated totackle a few projects aroundthe house before it warms upenough outside that I becomedistracted with the garden andyard work.Plan your projects. I love to

open up the cleaning supplycupboard, bathroom vanity orlinen pantry – or any closet orcabinet for that matter – andfind all my treasures and toolsclean and organized in a waysthat’s aesthetically pleasing. Itmakes me smile to see visual eyecandy like this.Even in the refrigerator

and the freezer, I love seeingmy food lovingly labelledand stored in organized andmatching containers. Withyour list in hand, tackle onejob at a time so you won’t getoverwhelmed.Create a system. This is

the secret that professionalorganizers employ to notonly makeover an area but toensure that clients can successfullyand efficiently maintain the ‘look.’Fold towels and linens uniformly, sothey always fit together and look wellpresented. Store like items together,

keeping sets of items together bysecuring them with white ribbon andlabel wherever necessary. In the refrigerator, I use baskets,

wooden, metal or white plastic binsto sort and store like items such as

condiments, fruits, fresh herbs, etc.I want my food to look as good as ittastes so I have a pretty basket on ashelf filled with fresh green apples orlemons.Put together a labelling and

organizational kit for yourself.I keep mine in a small cleaningcaddy and bring it with meas I move throughout a homeorganizing an area. Label, labeland label some more so youand others in the family caneasily identify what is in eachcontainer so you don’t have toriff le through searching forwhat you need.Use a computer printing

program, a label maker(unless you have wonderfulhandwriting which sometimesI prefer to a printed label) andattractive labels and tags fromyour craft store.Try to use similar containers,

bins and baskets in any onearea to keep the look uniform.Think outside the bin as well.I often use glass canisters tostore ribbons and buttons in thelaundry room, dish soaps andscrub pads under the kitchensink and under the bathroomvanity they can work well forfirst aid supplies, hair ties, etc.Spend the next couple of

weeks tackling the hiddenspaces in your home and you’llbe inviting all your friendsto look in your drawers and

cupboards. You’ll definitely want toshow them off and, more importantly, you and your family will love howreadily you’ll be able to find everythingyou need – that’s living fabulously!!

It’s the perfect time to think about cleaning - after the cold winter season and before it warmsup enough outside to become distracted with yard work.

Working Wise - Internet job scamsDear Working Wise: I saw an internet ad saying that I could make $1,000 a day on the Internet working from home. That sounds too good to be true. Is it?

Signed Wary

Dear Wary:

I doubt that a company that can afford to pay its employees $1,000 a day to work from home has to do much advertising. The Internet is filled with work-from-home scams masquerading as real jobs.

Top 10 Red Flags to watch for: • The job title, duties and

compensation are vague. • They show little interest in your

qualifications/skills. • The job offer is a spam e-mail or a

web-banner advertisement. • They pressure you to buy training

equipment/software for the “job”. • You are required to repackage

items sent to you and ship them abroad.

• The company is hard to identify,

locate or contact via telephone and e-mail.

• You are required to transfer or wire money out of your

personal bank account.

• Unprofessional: poor grammar, spelling, web design, webmail e-mail address.

• They want your Social Insurance

Number or banking/credit information right away.

• Too good to be true: guaranteed big money, no risk, no

experience, no effort needed.

You can also check suspicious job opportunities using the Scam Detector app, which describes more than 800 scams, including 64 employment scams.

The Scam Detector (http://scam-detector.com) provides a weekly top-10 list of the latest scams in partnership with the Better Business Bureau of Central and Northern Alberta.

The email processing scam hit number eight in January 2015. This scam promises that you will get paid $20 for every email that you process. All you have to do is pay a registration fee. Once you’ve registered and paid your fee, you will not receive any work and will not be able to contact the company.

Other scams involve your bank account. The “employer” will quickly hire you and then ask you for your banking information so they can deposit your earnings. Instead, they will use the information to steal your identity or your money.

“Employers” in another common scam, send you a cheque to deposit in your bank account and ask you to write a cheque to someone else for a little less. You get to keep the difference. The only problem is that the cheque they sent you is fake, yours is real, and you are now out hundreds of dollars.

March is Fraud Prevention Month. For tips and information on Fraud Prevention Month, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.phonebusters.com.

If you really want a job where you can work from home, you might want to try applying to legitimate employers for traditional jobs that you can do from home and then discuss the idea of telecommuting. Technological advances and potential cost savings are making

more companies open to the idea of employees working from home.

For home-based business ideas, search the tip sheets on the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) web site for “telecommuting”.

For more tips on preventing fraud, check out the Central and Northern Alberta Better Business Bureau’s Scam Stopper web page at

www.bbb.org/scam.

Good luck!

BRITTANY KUSTRASpecial to the Leader

The narrative about careers and success has changed. There’s a lot of pressure these days to find your passion and pursue it. I’m a young millennial, but I still feel anxious about finding my “true calling” and working my butt off to achieve my goals. I’ve never been encouraged to find a good job with a large company and stay with them for 30-plus years. Instead, I see online ads for life coaches encouraging me to quit my job without a backup plan in order to “follow my dreams.” Yikes. (That’s not good advice.)

So for those of us in a bit of a panic, a quarter-life crisis, or a mid-life crisis, here are some comforting facts about success: Martha Stewart launched her successful magazine, Martha Stewart Living, at age 49. Colonel Sanders was 62 years old when he first franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken. Vera Wang designed her first wedding dress at age 40, and Sir James Dyson of the famous vacuum brand was successful after 5,127 prototypes, tested over 15 years.

Many of NABI’s most successful tenants, past and present, have been baby boomers who began their own businesses after retirement. A Stats Can report showed that working seniors were almost four times as likely to be self-employed as younger workers, so it’s no surprise that our buildings are a healthy mix of young blood, mid-life second careers, and

older wisdom. For some, it’s about keeping busy and

active. Retirement is an opportunity to try your hands, full-time, at a passion project that a “regular” job prevented. For others, a comfortable financial situation can take some

of the risk out of starting a new business. With decades of business

knowledge under their belts, lots of time, and likely no

small children, retirees might be some of the

best candidates for entrepreneurship. Although perhaps less tech-focused than younger startups, retirees can find major success as speakers, consultants in their field

of expertise, or even franchise

owners. As independent industry

leaders, many go on to keynote conferences, host

webinars, and publish their own books. Others do “a 180,”

launching a woodworking business after a long career in finance, for example.

With experience, time, passion and the introduction of new personal pension plans, pursuing your dreams in retirement may not be such a wild goose chase, after all.

Brittany Kustra is the communications and marketing coordinator for the Northern

Alberta Business Incubator. Are you an entrepreneur between ages 15 and 99?

Then you can find resources at NABI to get your business off the ground and running

successfully. Visit www.nabi.ca or call 780-460-1000.

What does age have to do with it?Fending off workplace fatigueMETRO CREATIVE SERVICES – Fatigue can prove a formidable foe to anyone. Exercise enthusiasts and couch potatoes alike periodically can suffer from fatigue, which can affect performance at work and one’s relationships with friends and family.

Fatigue can be temporary or chronic, and while quick fixes like an energy drink might work for a little while, such solutions may only mask fatigue for a brief period before it returns once the stimulant wears off. Many times fending off fatigue involves making some lifestyle changes that can boost your energy over the long haul and make fatigue a distant memory.

• Eat breakfast no matter what. According to a study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, a high-fiber, high-carbohydrate breakfast can increase alertness between breakfast and lunch, a period of time during which many professionals begin to feel fatigue settling in. Whole-wheat toast or a bowl of high-fiber cereal can pack an energetic punch that lasts all the way to lunchtime.

• Choose high-energy snacks. One of the problems many people have when dealing with fatigue is how they choose to combat their feelings of sluggishness. Eating a candy bar from the office snack machine might seem like the ideal energy booster, but a sugar boost does not last very long. Chances are your feelings of fatigue will return sooner rather than later.

• Give yourself a break . Burning the midnight oil might be necessary, but failing to take breaks throughout the day will likely exasperate any feelings of fatigue. That’s because taking periodic breaks throughout the workday has been proven to be very effective at combating fatigue. A study conducted at Louisiana State University compared a trio of different work schedules for workers who used a computer. Those who took brief, frequent breaks were better at fighting fatigue and more productive at work than those who did not. A short break of 5 to 10 minutes can be enough to provide an immediate energy boost and fend off feelings of fatigue.

• Hit the road, Jack . Another way to effectively fight fatigue is to get walking. A decades-old study conducted by a researcher at California State University, Long Beach, found that walking briskly for 10 minutes provides people with more energy than eating a candy bar. Though the candy bar led to an initial energy boost, that boost died down within an hour, whereas the boost provided by a brisk walk increased energy levels for roughly two hours. Get up and walk around the office or take a brisk walk around the block or the parking lot of your office complex. You’ll come back to your desk refreshed and ready to resume your workday.

Fatigue is no laughing matter for many men and women. But a few tried and tested fatigue-fighting methods can increase your energy and productivity.
