Excerpt from our Valedictorian, Cody Miller…Our theme for this year’s graduation is “Be Present”. One could interpret this literallyas a reminder to show up diligently to work or classes. This would be especially helpfulfor some of us who struggled to do so for those early morning classes. I do, however,�� not dwell on the past nor is it to worry about the future. It means to experience what ishappening right now all around us…..…We were on this journey together. Our mutual desire to be fully immersed in the Frenchexperience proved to me that, collectively, we were all choosing to be present. Sta� from Paul Kane High School took a trip down memory lane this week, all without having to leave the school.

Current and former teachers and administrative sta� from Paul Kane came together on Tuesday in the school’s cafeteria to catch up and mark the school’s 50th anniversary.

Donna Chanasyk has taught at the school since 1977, and did the bulk of the work in organizing Tuesday’s celebration.

“I just thought we needed to do something,” she said, “so, in about May, I decided, let’s see what we can pull o�.”

Several St. Albert Public Schools trustees also attended the event, including Merrin Nuc, who was part of Paul Kane’s �rst graduating class in 1963.

Displays lined the walls of the cafeteria outlining the school’s achievements, and yearbooks were on display from all but one of the school’s 50 years.

As part of the celebration, Chanasyk dug up photos of each of the school’s principals, which were framed and will be hung in a prominent spot in one of the hallways.

“I think it’s pretty special,” Chanasyk said. “It’s something that, unless you do it, it doesn’t happen, and people forget who was here when. It’s kind of neat for people to go back and say, ‘Oh, I had that principal and that principal.’”

One of those photos is of John Hrynew, who was principal of Paul Kane from 1965 to 1986.

“It was a great place to be, to be

principal for all those years,” he said. “It’s nice, fond memories.”

Chanasyk said that about 50 former teachers made it out, most of whom were contacted through a database of former teachesr that she keeps.

She said that, for a lot of them, Paul Kane holds a special place in their hearts.

“I think it’s our tradition of excellence,” she said. “�at’s been a theme we had since I came on sta�, and I think it’s still the same.”

Meanwhile, current principal Duncan Knoll said it was great to see so many familiar faces come out.

“It means a lot to me,” he said. “I’ve been in the district for 30

years, so I know a lot of these people from being in di�erent schools and being at Paul Kane. And because it’s the 50th year, the 50th graduating class, it’s so nice to see so many people take time to be here.”

Prior to being named principal of Paul Kane, Knoll was a teacher at the school in the early 1990s, and he understands the bonds a lot of teachers feel with the school.

“It’s not just a job. For a lot of teachers, it’s a passion; it’s what they love to do. �ey feel like they’re contributing to the … community of St. Albert, so you feel very attached,” he said. “A lot of the people in this room helped build the St. Albert community.”

Another teacher from that era was Ann Scott, who taught math there from 1986 to 1994.

“It’s been really fun to see people I haven’t seen in a long time, people who I taught with in that timeframe,” said Scott, who now teaches at Bellerose Composite High School.

But perhaps even more special for Scott — who helped manage the rugby teams at the time — was seeing her own children attend Paul Kane and participate in the sports programs there.

“It was fun, because I knew the teachers at the time, so having teachers that I taught with teach my kids was a fun experience,” she said.

It has been a stressful couple of years for college students. An unstable economy has led many students to second-guess their investments in higher education, and fear regarding employment prospects a�er graduation are common among today’s students.

Graduates who majored in �elds of study that are more recession-proof than others could have decided advantages over students who went with other majors. Knowing which careers are still going strong and which have stalled can help college students with goals of �nding a career with growth potential.

Many forecasts indicate jobs in �nance will continue to remain strong with high growth. Despite �nancial ups and downs, people still need to be educated on how and where to spend their money. Students with degrees in �nance and marketing may have advantages over others.

Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. �eir work is the link between scienti�c discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs. Many di�erent �elds require engineers,

from mechanical and civil industries to electrical and chemical industries. Engineering remains a strong course of study with many di�erent subsets for specialization.

With the world revolving around computers, jobs in the systems administration �eld remain viable. Keep in mind that there is also a wide array of competition in these careers, but the ability to make high salaries is what drives many to pursue careers in networking and computer systems administration.

Similar to other �nancial careers, accounting jobs remain stable despite the uncertain economy. Where there is money to be spent, individuals and businesses will require the services of accountants to keep all of their accounts in check. Entry-level accountants can receive in-house promotions and become �nance executives.

Jobs in health care continue to be strong as well. An aging population keeps nurses, doctors, aides and medical-supply companies in business. �ere are many di�erent nursing specializations, making nursing an attractive career choice.

Keeping today’s digital world running requires a sta� of people constantly updating and creating new so�ware. From games to business applications to all of those entertaining apps downloaded each day, so�ware designers pave the way for computer innovation.

Sales is one of the oldest and longest-running types of occupations available. Every industry needs quality sales professionals to meet with the public and drive interest in products and services. �ere are sales positions in just about every industry.

�e millennial generation is just as large as the baby boom generation, and children will continue to �ll up classrooms across the world. It is estimated three million more teachers are needed by 2015 to �ll openings in the United States alone. Also, initiatives to require Pre-K classes could increase the number of education jobs even further.

�e need to protect personal information from those who want to exploit it continues to grow. Computer information security will continue to increase with the expansion of technological applications.
