    A. reface

It gives me immense pleasure to present the SSR of my college for the third cycle of accreditation by NAAC. Devchand College was established by the great visionary Padmabhushan Shriman Seth Devchandji Shah in the year 1960 to spread the light of education in the life of thousands of children of villagers, poor farmers, landless laborers, tobacco and beedi workers who were struggling in the darkness of ignorance, poverty and exclusion. He developed excellent infrastructure and invited the talented, renowned and devoted teachers from big cities like Pune, Mumbai, Mangalore and Dharwad to the remote village viz Arjunnagar, in order to provide quality education to the rural students. Initially the college was affiliated to the University of Pune, Pune, but after the establishment of Shivaji University, Kolhapur in 1961 the college affiliation got transferred. Within a short span of time, the college established its reputation for its quality and excellence. Recognizing the conscious and continuing efforts of the institution for the social and economic transformation of neighboring villages, the NAAC has awarded our college with A grade during the first cycle accreditation (2004) and B grade with CGPA of 2.89 in second cycle accreditation (2011) respectively. Since then the Management and staff have taken drastic measures to reinforce their efforts in order to regain the lost glory of the college. The college has fulfilled almost all the recommendations made by the peer team. The Governing body led by the President, the Principal and IQAC put up their best efforts to design and implement quality initiatives keeping in view the core values and guidelines of NAAC, changes in the educational environment of the nation and vision and mission of the institution. All out efforts have been made to improve the quality of the academic, research and extension activities. The self-study report presented herewith is the testimony of the progress achieved by the institution in the last five years. Lot of development has been done in the last five years such as construction of six new classrooms, library building, strengthening of college building, renovation and face lifting of all laboratories and many more facilities. This has enabled the institution to obtain DST-FIST grant of Rs. 80 lakhs from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, which is a remarkable achievement. I wholeheartedly appreciate the efforts put in by the students and staff of my college in bringing laurels to the institution though their achievements in various fields during the last five years. The SSR has been prepared by IQAC with the involvement of all faculty and administrative staff. I thank all the stakeholders who have directly and indirectly contributed in the accomplishment of all academic, research and extension activities narrated in this report. I owe a great sense of gratitude towards the fountain-head of inspiration, the President, Janata Shikshan Mandal, Mr. Aashishbhai Kiranbhai Shah and also his team, who always stood by us like a rock of Gibralt and supported us through the thick and thin of all situations. B. Executive summary Devchand College, Arjunnagar

An Educational Institution with Quality and Excellence Devchand College is a premier and renowned grant-in-aid institution affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur in the State of Maharashtra. Padmabhushan Shriman Seth Devchandji Shah established the college in 1960 with the sole objective of transforming lives of thousands of children of villagers, poor farmers, landless laborers, tobacco and beedi workers in and around forty villages surrounding the town of Nipani through the potent tool of quality higher education. Since its inception, Devchand College has earned fame and name as an institution with quality par excellence. The college is run by an educational Trust, Janata Shikshan Mandal, which has attained Jain minority status in the year 2011. The Mandal celebrated Golden Jubilee year. Many renowned personalities visited the institute. The Management of the college consists of highly educated and renowned persons who are driven by service motive, proactive, dynamic and democratic in approach. The head of the institution is an academician with leadership qualities, executive skills and has great passion and commitment for the all round development of the institution. The institution has started many new courses, has signed many MOUs. The institution has a vibrant Internal Quality Assurance Cell which plays catalytic role in nurturing and developing the quality of education as per the philosophy and guidelines of NAAC with great precision and devotion. To enhance quality of education, IQAC cell gives suggestions; academic audit (Mock NAAC) conducted by Management, feedback of students helps to develop benchmarks & innovative ideas for mechanisum of quality enhancement. Considering the importance of ICT we have increased number of ICT enabled classrooms, computers with internet facilities etc. The institution has provided best infrastructure and has created awareness about hygiene & cleanliness. The assessment period of the third cycle accreditation (2011-2016) has witnessed notable achievements in every aspect. Criterion I: Curricular Aspects The college offers conventional UG and PG courses in science, arts and commerce streams. Besides these, several need-based certificate and diploma courses are offered to students. Being an affiliated college, the syllabi are designed by the affiliating University which has been accredited with A grade by NAAC. Our faculty, one in senate, one in academic council and faculty of commerce, one in BOS and ten in syllabus revision committee play active role in policy making and revising the syllabi of the affiliating University. Several members of the staff have offered concrete suggestions to the University regarding the design and revision of curriculum. The college has organized three workshops on revised curricula on behalf of the University. To train the students in competitive examination, spoken English and computational skills, the syllabi for such courses are designed by our faculty. Students are motivated to undergo these courses so as to enhance

their employment potential. The institution has two distance education centers which provide additional opportunity for students to obtain dual degrees, namely, (1) Centre for distance education, Shivaji University, Kolhapur and (2) Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, (YCMOU) Nashik. During the third cycle, our college has introduced one PG Course, two diploma courses, ten certificate courses, and one distance education centre. The institution offers academic flexibility to the students through its wide range of courses, optional subjects, and add-on courses, which can contribute to the development of our nation. The UGC guidelines and the vision and mission of the institution are adhered to while restructuring the courses and curricula. Criterion II: Teaching, Learning and Evaluation: To provide quality education to the rural students from deprived classes, we try our best to accommodate maximum number of students every year. Qualified and competent teachers, ICT-enabled classrooms (9) and video-conferencing unit, sufficient infrastructure, academic atmosphere, remedial coaching and facilities to advanced learners and personal attention help to maintain quality in TLE. The student-centric teaching and learning ensure interactive, participative and experiential learning. The conduct of unit tests, internal examinations and semester examinations, fair and transparent evaluation process have made examination and evaluation processes effective. Progress achieved by the college during the third cycle through its policy of promotion of national commitment to diversity and inclusion can be noticed from the cycle-wise classification of students profile demonstrated in the following table.

of faculty are recipients of awards whereas, 20 students have won merit scholarships. Our library repository has been enriched by 160 e-notes and 375 PPTs prepared by the faculty. All these factors contribute to the effectiveness of TLE. Criterion III: Research, Consultancy and Extension The college has ambience conducive for research. The college has well equipped research laboratory in Chemistry and a research degree course M.Phil in English recognized by Shivaji University. Research laboratory in Chemistry has been established in Jan. 2011 and recognized by Shivaji University from June, 13 to June, 16 for M. Phil. and Ph.D. research. Eight research students are working for their Ph.D. in the thrust area Synthetic Heterocyclic Chemistry and Nanocatalysis; out of which one student has submitted his Ph.D. thesis. Management has planned to construct three new research laboratories to promote research in pure sciences and one common research facility centre to facilitate interdisciplinary research in social sciences. It has taken a big leap in the area of research and publications during the last five years. One major and thirteen minor research projects have been sanctioned by UGC during the last five years. Ten project proposals have been sent to different funding agencies. The amount received for research projects in last three cycles is 40,000/-, 3,44,000/- and 20,82,000/- respectively. During the assessment period 151 research papers have been published by the faculty in international journals with impact factor in the range of 1.0285 to 8.1; 44 research papers in national journals and 43 papers in conference proceedings. The average impact factor of the journals is 2.044. Ten books have been published by the faculty of which four are by international publishers. One peer reviewed inter-disciplinary international journal is published by the department of History. There are 320 research papers presented in international / national conferences / seminars. One multi-disciplinary international conference, seven UGC sponsored national seminars / conferences and one ICSSR sponsored national seminar were organized. One DST sponsored INSPIRE Internship Science Camp, twelve workshops under lead college scheme of the University were organized. This year two national seminars have been sanctioned by UGC. The institution has played a major role in attracting eminent personalities in research to visit the campus. As the college is situated in hilly & rural setup, there is limited scope for industry centered consultancy services. However, consultancy activities are gradually gaining momentum. Several members of the faculty offer honorary consultancy to other academic bodies, NGOs, peoples movements, farmers, small businesses and voluntary agencies in the areas of accreditation, environmental issues, soft-skills, communication skills, personality development, social, educational and cultural issues etc. A birds eye view of contribution of faculty in research and publication in the table given below highlights the big leap in research and extension

Criterion V: Students Support and Progression: Creation of an inspiring, caring and compassionate campus for students of rural area has been one of the fundamental goals of our institution. Hence planned efforts are made for holistic development of the students. Remedial coaching for slow learners and personal counseling through mentor care programmes bring about enlightened awareness and enhance their capabilities. Different cells organize programmes for training, career guidance, placement training and campus recruitment drives for the students. Considerable contribution is made by the President through his two charitable Trusts for providing financial aid to the needy and deserving students. Alumini helps in training and placement of students. The Anti-Ragging cell takes measures to curb ragging. Students avail various scholarships and schemes of financial support. Encouragement and support for students participation in games, tournaments, cultural, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities and competitions in and out of the college, has brought laurels to the students and the institution. Feedback from students is validated by revising the syllabi and planning for skill enhancement programmes. Students are motivated to present and publish their articles in college magazine and participate and win in the collegiate / inter-collegiate competitions. The performance of our college in the various University examinations, sports and cultural activities during the last five years is quite encouraging. Some of the highlights of our students achievements are: 10 students obtained Shivaji University Merit Scholarship; in sports, volley ball zonal championship for twenty seventh time, inter-zonal championship for twenty second time in 2015-16; Amit Nimbalkar secured gold medal for India at World Power-lifting competitions at Las Vegas in the USA in September, 2014; a silver medal for India at Asian Power-lifting Competitions at Hongkong in December, 2015; Ganesh Mali bagged a bronze medal for India at Glasgow Commonwealth games in August, 2014; cricket team won zonal and inter-zonal championship in December, 2015 and our players shine in the inter-University tournaments too. The following new courses are introduced by the college during the last five years:

    Course (Parent Department)

    Rationale

    1. M.Sc. Agro-chemicals and pest Management (Botany)

Our college is located in rural set up. Hence this course helps students to address local needs.

    2. Certificate course in fundamentals of computers, MS office and internet ( computer)

Basic knowledge of computers is indispensible for modern graduates to seek jobs in any sector. But this crucial component was missing in the curricula of affiliating University.

Industries in the vicinity insist on knowledge of tally accounting software while selecting a Commerce graduate for a vacancy. In-depth knowledge of tally is not in the curricula of B.Com. course of affiliating University.

  • DEVCHAND COLLEGE, ARJUNNAGAR

SSR for third cycle accreditation [Mar.-2016] Page 35

    4. Certificate and Diploma Courses in spoken English (English)

Students of our college come from vernacular medium. Hence are weak in English communication. As a result they face difficulties in pursuing higher courses and while seeking job in organized sector. This course provide them solution.

    5. Certificate courses in (a) spoken Hindi (b) Writing Skills in Hindi ( Hindi)

Students of our college come from vernacular medium. Hence are weak in Hindi communication. They get openings as trainers, teachers, proof readers, translators and newsreaders in mass media if they undergo this course.

    6. Certificate course in (a) Garden training (b) Horticulture techniques (c) Green house Management ( Botany)

Majority of our students come from the families of farmers. Hence these courses equip them with scientific know-how for increasing the productivity in agriculture.

    7. Certificate course in Hardware and Networking (Computers)

This course has a potential to equip our students to seek jobs as technicians in large enterprises or to start their own enterprise in IT sector.

    8. Training in competitive examinations ( English, Statistics, Logic)

For seeking employment in organized sector or admission to higher courses the students have to face entrance exam or aptitude test. But unfortunately the curricula for our conventional courses do not have provision to impart the skill of facing such examinations. This course may provide them solution and improve their chances of success and achieve their goals.
