CourseScopeandPurposeThiscourseexploresthetheoreticalfoundations,methods,techniques,andsoftwaresystemsforspatialeconometrics.Thecourseaimstoprovidestudentswiththeknowledgeandskillsnecessarytoinvestigatesocioeconomicproblems,withtheconsiderationoftheeffectsofspatialdependenceandspatialheterogeneity.Essentialconceptsofspatialeconometricsarepresented,includingthefundamentalspatialconceptsandthecorecomponentsofspatialregressionmodelsforbothcross-sectionalandpanel(timeseries)data.Thelatestresearchinavarietyoftopicsusingspatialeconometricmodelsisalsoexamined.Studentswillgainanin-depthunderstandingandhands-onexperiencetoexploreavarietyofapplicationsthroughacombinationofhomework,presentations,andprojects.Studentswilllearnaboutthevarietyofgeospatialdataandtechniquesavailableforsolvingsocioeconomicchallengesandproblems.

ThiscourseservesasarequiredcoursefortheSpatialEconomicsandDataAnalysisM.S.ProgramandanelectivecourseintheGeographicInformationScienceandTechnologyM.S.andGraduateCertificatePrograms.Anyonewishingtopursueacareerinsolvingsocialandbuiltenvironmentproblemsusingspatialdataanalysisshouldgainanunderstandingofspatialregressionmodelsandthereforewillbebenefitingfromthiscourse.

CourseStructureThisisafour-creditcoursethatmeetstwiceperweek.Thecoursewillbedeliveredusingmultiplemethods,includinglectures,classpresentationsandhands-onpractice.ExercisesutilizeunpublishedandpublishedtutorialmaterialsusingArcGISPro,GeoDa,andR,andafinalprojectallowsstudentstodemonstratetheirabilitytoapplyspatialstatisticalandeconometricmethodsinanappropriate,informedmanner.Studentparticipationisencouragedthroughreadingdiscussions,hands-onpractices,homeworkassignments,andclasspresentations.

Thisisagraduate-levelcourse,soyoushouldexpectthisclasstobeintellectuallychallenging.Asthisisafour-creditcourse,studentsshouldexpecttospend10-15hoursperweekcompletingtheworkinthiscourse.Asagraduatestudent,youareexpectedtoengagewiththeinformationyouarelearningandtoexploretheideas,opinion,andanalysisthatdescribeourcollectiveefforttothoroughlyinterrogatethesubjectathand.Learningarisesfromactive

engagementwiththeknowledgefoundinourreadingmaterialsandwithoneanother.Asinanygraduateclass,theinstructor’sroleisthatofaguidewhokeepsyouonthispathofdiscovery.

TechnologicalRequirementsThecoursewillbefocusedonusingArcGISProaswellasGeoDaandRforcourseassignmentsandhands-onpracticesinclass.Thelattertwosoftwareplatformsarefree,opensourcesoftware.AnotherimportantprogramthatmightbeusefulisRStudio,anintegrateddevelopmentenvironment(IDE)forR.

Studentscandownloadtheabovementionedfreeandopensourcesoftwareonline,andallthreeofthesesoftwareplatformsusingtheremoteSpatialSciencesInstituteServer(SSIServer).Ifyouareunabletoconnecttotheserverorexperienceanytypeoftechnicalissues,sendanemailusingyourUSCaccounttoTechSupportatspatial_support@usc.edu,makesuretocopy(c.c.)youinstructorontheemail.Questionspertainingtospecificassignmentsshouldbedirectedtoyourinstructor.

LeadClassDiscussion–4worthatotalof16points.Thesewillfocusonthetheoryportionofthecourseaspresentedintheweeklyreadings.Eachstudentwillberesponsibleforleadingseveralclassdiscussionsontheassignedreadings.Theobjectiveistohelpyouevaluateandintegratetheinformationyouhaveacquiredfromthecoursereadingsanddeveloppublicpresentationskills.Youarestronglyrecommendedtoreadallmaterialoutlinedforeachweekbeforetheclasssession,butyouwillconduct15-20minutespresentationsaboutthereadingsandprepare2-3questionsforclassdiscussionontheassignedweeks.

Quizzes–5worthatotalof15points.Therewouldbequizzesonthelecturesandreadingsfromthepreviousweek.Thetop5scorewouldbecountedtowardthefinalgrade.Thereisnofinal,sothequizzesaretheassessmentofhowwellthestudentshavelearnedthematerialduringthesemester.

HomeworkAssignments–4worthatotalof28points.Studentswillbeassignedfourhomeworkduringthecourse.Theassignmentsincludehands-onpracticesonspatialtechniquesexploredintheoryinthetextsaswellaspracticaljobsearchandapplicationskillstopreparestudentsforthejobmarket.

In-ClassWork-12worthatotalof12points.Anin-classengagementgradeforthesemesterwillbeassignedbaseduponstudentengagementintheclasssessions.Theactivitiesofin-classengagementcanbe,butnotlimitedto,one-minutewriting,groupdiscussion,orhands-onpractices.Failuretoparticipateinin-classengagementactivitieswillreceivenogradeforthatweek.

FinalProject

Inthesecondhalfofthecourse,studentswillworkinteamsonprojectsdeterminedinconsultationwiththeinstructor.Theteamwillproposetheirownprojectsbasedonthetopicscoveredinclass.Thegradesforthefinalprojectwillbespreadacrossthreecomponentsasfollows.Peerevaluationwouldbeconsideredinthefinalgradestoensureindividualresponsibilityandreliabilityintheteamproject.

WrittenProposal–5points.Aproposaldocumentdevelopedfromtheprojectideadiscussionandthefeedbackreceived.

Finalpresentation–10points.Afinalpresentationduringthefinalweekoftheclasssession.
