    /ntroduction

    Thank you for purchasing a SS-40HT Receiver. We hope you will enjoy building i and using i o

    lisen o he 40-!eer band. This receiver concep was firs conceived several years ago as par of a "-

    #and SS#$%W ransceiver. Tha projec is &ongoing'. (n he )eani)e* i see)ed like a good idea ocreae a sand alone receiver which could be used wih he 4 Sae +R, group S-40 Trans)ier or

    oher 40-!eer rans)ier/ and he 1(+2 !agic#o3* also available fro) 4 Sae/ o asse)ble a

    co)plee saion.

    This newes version of he SS-40 Receiver has header pins added so ha i can be easily inerfaced o a

    newly designed SS-40 Trans)ier #oard o creae a co)plee 40-)eer ransceiver. (n addiion* anaenuaor has been added a he oupu of he 56 so ha he drive level ino he )i3er can be easily

    )easured.

    This receiver is a superherodyne design e)ploying a very Sable 56 for fre7uency conrol. ( has no

     percepible drif* even fro) a cold sar. ( is also very Sensiive wih an !8S of beer han -9:0 d#).

    Since i operaes on 40-!eers* i was dubbed he SS-40HT Receiver. 6her feaures of he receiver

    include roo) filling volu)e when using a speaker* ; #uerworh crysal filer. ( unes "=-:0 H> of he band including he wo +R, waering

    holes a ?0:0 and ?040 H>.

    ,rined %ircui #oard consrucion is used wih wide par spacing. ;ll of he pars have leads e3cep for 

    he )i3er* which is a large fooprin surface )oun uni. 6nly " oroids wih a single winding each are

    used* )ini)i>ing frusraion for new builders. ;ll conrols and jacks are ,%# )ouned* eli)inaingconrol wiring. The receiver can be consruced by beginners as well as e3perienced builders.

    %onsrucion i)e is appro3i)aely "0 hours* depending on e3perience level. #uilding follows he

    sche)aic diagra) layou* allowing secions o be co)pleed and esed when possible before )oving

    on.

    !odified ,ins Soldered o ,%#

    Turn he ,%# over and place he 90 linear poenio)eer solder lugs over hese pins wih he shaf poining away fro) he board. (f you have li7uid flu3 available* use a s)all a)oun of ha a each pin

    locaion o )ake he solder flow beer. %arefully solder one of he poenio)eer lugs o iscorresponding pin while holding he poenio)eer down agains he ,%# surface and pushed genly

    away fro) he edge of he ,%# so ha he poenio)eer is aligned as far rearward as is will go. (f you

    are happy wih he align)en* solder he oher lug* or rehea he firs lug o )ore favorably realign he poenio)eer. 6nce he ouer poenio)eer lugs are soldered* solder he cener lug. When all of he

     poenio)eer lugs are soldered* he ,%# will look like he following phoos.

    Ste% ) ( Connectors

    (nsall a 4-pin header spanning he locaions G9H; and G9H( insall "-pin headers a locaions G"H*G4H* and 5H. (nser he shorer end of each header fro) he co)ponen side of he ,%# and solder

    on he boo) side. Highligh he) on he sche)aic when you are done soldering. 2our ,%# will

    (nsall connecors G9 hrough G4. They are all mounted on t'e bottom side of he ,%# and solderedon he op or co)ponen side of he board. These are he only pars ha )oun on he underside of he

    Ste% ) ( Mier Com%onent

     oice ha &co)ponen' is used as here is only one par o be insalled in his sep. However* i is

     probably he )os difficul for )os builders* especially hose who are new ki builders. The key o

    soldering he !59 !i3er is o use a iny a)oun of li7uid flu3* if available* on each pad before seinghe )i3er on he ,%#. (f using li7uid flu3* le he par se for 9=-"0 )inues so ha he flu3 &glues' he

    chip in place. The oher key is o only solder one pin so ha if he )i3er )oves posiion* ha pin can be reheaed and he chip pushed back ino posiion. ;lso* use a s)all soldering ip for his par.So)ehing on he order of 9$9K inch P$- should work fine on a "=-40 wa soldering iron. 6nce one pin

    is soldered and he chip align)en is correc )ake sure he dos align/* solder he oher = pins.  Note:The mixer must be installed correctly for the !"#$T recei%er to &or'. This step must be done
