SRM Practicum& Internship Meeting
The purpose of the practicum is to introduce Sport and Recreation Management majors to the variety and scope of
employment opportunities within the field.
Purpose of Practicum & Internship
The purpose of the internship is to provide a full-time professional experience.
The goals are simple……
The goals of the practicum are:
To identify areas of interest/disinterest, ultimatelyfinding the correct professional fit.
To develop goals for future career paths. To develop awareness of personal strengths, abilities and areas
of interest. To identify areas requiring self-improvement and to develop
strategies to eliminate weakness. To broaden work-related experience in the area of Sport and
Recreation Management.
Internship Goals
The goals of the internship are:
To provide the student with work experience that broadens the understanding of the workplace (human behavior, management styles, leadership characteristics, work ethics, task prioritizing, etc.).
To assist students in developing goals and objectives for their future career path.
To work with a professional mentor and understand performance evaluation and accountability.
To develop human relation skills. To provide the student with work experience on which to build and launch
a professional career.
SRM 282 is Worth 3 Credits and SRM 482 is Worth 6 Credits. You must complete SRM 282 before you are
eligible for SRM 482

Just like any other JMU course, you will have assignments and you must meet deadlines in order to
pass.
WHEN ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO COMPLETE A PRACTICUM OR INTERNSHIP?

WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS?
Criteria
When am I eligible?
SRM 282 Practicum
After you have completed:
• SRM 241
SRM 482 Internship
After you have completed:
• SRM 282, SRM 333, and have completed 72
credit hours
• Cannot be on academic probation
What are the requirements?
SRM 282
90 hours
over the course of the academic term
enrolled
SRM/KIN 482
400 hours Over a Minimum of 10 Weeks
40 Hours Per Week
You may only carry ONE additional course while
enrolled for SRM/KIN 482
• Start Early. Don’t wait until the last minute to secure your site.
• Don’t settle for convenience. Have a strategy and look for sites that will help you get to where you want to go in your career.
• Consult with other people, such as: • SRM Practicum & Internship Coordinator• SRM Academic Advisor• SRM Faculty• SRM Alumni• Industry professionals working in your area of interest

Will my practicum or internship site be approved?
All practicum and internship sites must be approved by the SRM
Practicum/Internship Coordinator
Most sites will be approved as long as the organization fits within the sport and recreation industry.
• You will need to complete an agency agreement form that will be submitted to the SRM Practicum & Internship Coordinator. Scan and then email the signed form to [email protected].
• In order to receive your override during open registration, complete your paperwork by the following dates:
• Fall practicum or internship – April 15• Spring practicum or internship – November 15• Summer practicum or internship – April 15

The Form is In, Now What?
• When your form is processed, you will receive an email from the SHSRM Administrative Assistant telling you that you can register for the practicum or internship class.
• Experiences should begin the first week of classes.
• Once you have received the email from the Administrative Assistant, you can now enroll for the course.
•To enroll, go to My Madison.
• Remember, all practicum and internship experiences are classes and you must be registered for the course prior to starting your hours with the site agency.
