    About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, an island in the Indian Ocean is located to the South of the Indian subcontinent. It lies between 5 55 and 9 55 North of the equator and between the Eastern longitudes 79 42 and 81 52. The total land area is 65,610 sq km and is astonishingly varied. A length of 445 km and breadth of 225 km encompasses beautiful tropical beaches, ver-dant vegetation, ancient monuments and a thousand delights to please all tastes. The relief features of the island consist of a mountainous mass somewhat south of the centre, with height exceeding 2,500 meters, surrounded by

broad plains. Palm fringed beaches surround the island and the sea temperature rarely fall below 27 C.

  • With a population composed with many a races and religions, Sri Lanka is never short of

festivals and celebrations. Every month brings a celebration either religious or cultural im-

portance, making Sri Lanka one of the countries with highest number of celebrations and

    holidays.

    Essence

Despite its fame as a resplendent island and a leading tourist destination, the secret of Sri

Lankas attraction lies with its people. The spice addicted, cricket crazy and tea drinking

people of Sri Lanka are famed for big smiles and a bigger heart. With a culture enriched

with three thousand years of knowledge, Buddhism and many a colonial traditions, the Sri

Lankan society is a potpourri of religions and races different yet similar in many a ways.

    Bliss

    Scenic

Sri Lanka is filled with romantic landscapes, governed by rising mountains, lush forests,

ocean like tanks and gushing waterfalls, that it was considered the lost paradise by many a

globe trotters, who fell upon the country. The golden beaches of the country had been

praised for their picture postcard views since eternity. The dusk and dawn and many hu-

man activities connected to these times of the day creates a vibrant picture along the

    coasts of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka had continued to inspire and heal many who travelled to its shores ever since its

existence was known to the world. Many who set foot on the island had considered it a

part of a divine existence, Sri Lanka still continues to wrap its charm around its visitors, cap-

turing their imagination with sights, sounds and flavors. Sri Lankan cuisines are a hidden

treat to many while Ayurveda and meditation continues to heal the bodies and minds worn

out with the cares of life.

Despite its small size Sri Lanka boasts of one of the highest rates of biological endemism in

the world whether in plants or animals and is included among the top five biodiversity

hotspots in the world. Of the ninety-one species of mammals found in Sri Lanka Asian ele-

phants, sloth bear, leopards, sambar and wild buffaloes engages the majority of the atten-

tion of wildlife enthusiast. Yet the rarest mammals of Sri Lanka are the red slender Loris,

Toque Macaque, and Purple-faced Langur, who according to IUCN clarifications are endan-

gered due to habitat loss. Wild

    Thrills

    Heritage

    Festive

With a history expanding over 3000years, Sri Lanka holds some of worlds ancient cities

including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Digamadulla; their once glorious townships,

palaces, temples, monasteries, hospitals and theaters intricately carved and modeled out of

stone lay and abandoned and forgotten with time amidst the soaring jungles.

With varying climates and Geography packed into a small island Sri Lanka offers a range of adventures from the top of the mountains to the depths of the oceans. Other than taking a dip in the oceans or snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing are the most popular beach sports in the country. Scuba diving has long history in the country. Today the oceans filled with coral gardens, multitude of exotic fishes and ancient wrecks Sri Lanka offers one of the best diving experiences in the world. Although comparatively new to the country surfing too has made its mark in the Southern and Eastern coasts of the island for the last

  • Things to do.. Things to do..

Endless beaches, timeless ruins, welcoming people, oodles of elephants, killer surf, cheap prices, fun

trains, famous tea, flavourful food need we go on?

The Undiscovered Country You might say Sri Lanka has been hiding in plain sight. Countless scores of travellers have passed overhead on

their way to someplace else, but years of war and challenges such as tsunamis have kept Sri Lanka off many itineraries.

But now as youve probably heard the war is over and Sri Lankas looking up. If youve done India, grown blas about Southeast Asia or

simply want to explore a place whose appeal and pleasures are myriad, then its time you dropped in.

So Much in So Little Sri Lankas attributes are many. Few places have as many Unesco World Heritage Sites (eight) packed into such a small

area. Its 2000-plus years of culture can be discovered at ancient sites filled with mystery. Legendary temples boast beautiful details crafted

    by artisans through the centuries.

Across whole swaths of the country, that thing that goes bump in the night might be an elephant heading to a favourite waterhole. Safari

tours of Sri Lankas pleasantly relaxed national parks encounter leopards, grouchy water buffaloes, all manner of birds and a passel of pri-

    mates.

When youre ready to escape the tropical climate of the coast and lowlands, head for the hills, which are verdant, virescent and virally infec-

tious with allure. Impossibly green tea plantations and rainforested peaks beckon walkers, trekkers or just those who want to see it on a

    spectacular train ride.

And then there are the beaches. The beaches! Dazzlingly white and all so often untrod, they ring the island so that no matter where you go,

youll be near a sandy gem. Should you beat the inevitable languor, you can surf and dive world-class sites without world-class crowds.

Its So Easy Distances are short: see the sacred home of the worlds oldest living tree in the morning (Anuradhapura) and stand awestruck

by the sight of hundreds of elephants gathering in the afternoon (Minneriya). Find a favourite beach to call your own, meditate in a 2000-

year-old temple, exchange smiles while strolling a mellow village, marvel at birds and wildflowers, try to keep count of the little dishes that

come with your rice and curry. Stroll past colonial gems in Colombo and then hit some epic surf.

Sri Lanka is spectacular, its affordable and its still mostly uncrowded. Now is the best time to discover it.
