Houses 1 and 2 (explored in 1947), as well as House 3 (discovered in 2004), belong to the oldest settlement horizon. They were roughly dated to the 10th century. Life in the settlement ceased during the irst decades of the 11th century at the latest. It was a turbulent period on both sides of the Danube. On the right bank, the Byzantine empire deinitively restored its authority, while the region to the north of the Danube was theatre of conlicts between Stephen I of Hungary (1000-1038) and the prince Ahtum, who ruled independently over the region of todays Banat.Key words: Panevo, Najeva ciglana site, medieval settlement, dwellings, pottery, 10th-11th century

MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT AT NAJEVA CIGLANA SITE IN PANEVO: OBJECTS FROM THE 10th-11th CENTURY

SummaryNajeva ciglana site is situated on the southern outskirts of Panevo,

by the western border of Topola settlement. It occupies a high bank of one of Tamis old branches that surrounded it in the past and separated it from the rest of the marshy terrain. Todays conluence of the Tami and Danube is about a kilometer and half to the west. The intensive brick production before the Second World War had destroyed much of the site before irst archeological studies could begin. The sites vulnerability was the main reason for protective excavation, undertook in 1947 in the local-itys northern part. This has unearthed remnants of a mediaeval locality that was roughly dated back to the 9th century. On the occasion, two dwell-ings (Houses 1 and 2), two stoves, two hearths outside of the houses, and three pits were discovered. Although preliminary research has conirmed the outstanding im-portance of this site, its destruction continued in the following decades as well, making it hard today to establish precisely what surface has been destroyed by the brickyards protracted functioning. The only remaining part of the locality is a surface 300m long and 150m wide, which stretches along the Topola pond. Archaeological excavations, conducted in 2003 and 2004, conirmed the existence of a multi-layered site, with cultural layers and objects dated back to the period ranging from the Bronze Age to the late Middle Ages. During the 2004 excavations, remnants of a medieval object (House 3) have been discovered in the northern end of the sites preserved part. It is an object that, for now, belongs to the oldest medieval settlement layer in the locality, together with the objects explored in 1947. By its typological features, the pottery found in the explored hous-

A somewhat more precise dating would place it within the 10th century, and no later than the late 9th century. On the other hand, life in the settlement ceased during the irst de-cades of the 11th century at the latest. That was a turbulent period on both sides of the Danube. On the right bank, the Byzantine empire deinitively restored its authority, while the area to the north of the Danube was theatre of conlicts between Stephen I of Hungary (10001038) and the prince Ah-tum, who independently ruled over the region of todays Banat. Stephens victory over Ahtum inally brought an end to the question of authority over eastern parts of the Carpathian basin
