After being invited to provide LED lighting for Pontefract Squash & Leisure Club (PSLC) gym we were asked by the club to look at providing a LED lighting solution for their squash courts.

After years of research and development with PSLC and under strict guidelines from Mick Todd (manager of PSLC) and Malcolm Willstrop we created a light which improved the lighting on a Squash Court dramatically.

The lighting was used at PSLC for the European Club Championships and since then we have sold the lights worldwide including Alaska and Australia.

LED ideas now sees squash as a driving part of its product range and has recently started to sponsor young talents and events like the Allam British Open.

LED ideas would like together to grow with the game of squash.

LED Ideas met with Malcolm Willstrop and Mick Todd to discuss the use of LED lighting for squash court use. A feasibility study was carried out followed by a period of experimentation and testing all aspects of the lighting including glare, shadows, colour rendering, impact resistance and lux levels. The finalised design was successfully implemented for use at the Pontefract hosted 2011 European Championships. The Pontefract brief required a high standard of lighting and LED Ideas developed two designs, one to provide 750 Lux for professional use and the other 450 Lux for standard use. LED Ideas Ltd also completed new lighting in the fully refurbished gym in order to comply with mood and well being regulations.

Pontefract Case Study

Stillington Squash Club approached LED Ideas for advise on replacing their existing fluorescent lights. The existing installation was poor quality and required regular maintenance. LED Ideas provided an economical LED design solution which was implemented. The result is a high quality lighting installation which dramatically improved the playability of the courts. The members are understandably delighted with the outcome.

The LED lights provide a lot of vibrant light that has improved the court visually and provided a nicer playing environment, I find LED lights a lot less harsh than fluorescent’s.

What a transformation your LED lights have made to our squash club. The quality and quantity of the light is truly impressive, giving optimum visibility with absolutely no shadows.

LED Ideas were recommended to Nottingham Squash & Racketball Club by Mercedes-Benz, Nottingham and have never looked back. NSRC heard about other clubs in the country getting new LED lights fitted to their courts so not to be left behind NSRC got LED Ideas to fit out 2 courts with new LED lighting which they found to be so impressive that they have now had 8 courts updated to LED. They are very pleased with the outcome and say fluorescent tube lighting is no comparison.

Nottingham Case StudyAberdeen Squash & Racketball Club approached us when they were about to host the legends tour with Peter Nichol and wanted to improve their lighting for the event. LED Ideas surveyed the club and provided a full and professional lighting solution. All 10 international squash courts had an LED lighting solution implemented. We carried out detailed design and produced working drawings using Dialux and AutoCAD software. We appointed an electrical contractor and supervised the site works through to completion.

The lights are brighter, making the courts clearer. There are no shadows and the light is a very even ‘colour’ – which can’t be said for fluorescent. But, of course, the big plus is the lack of changing them.

Aberdeen Case Study

We are very happy with the outcome. The lights have mad a huge improvement to our courts and as a plus we now have more control over our utility costs!

I understand that the team at Pontefract have been instrumental in identifying the optimum level, clarity and colour of court lighting that is now enjoyed at the Club.

Jon Carney, Facilities Manager ESR

Obviously we are delighted with the aesthetical improvements to the courts. The whiter, brighter and cleaner light has transformed 8 of the 10 courts we have managed to do so far, and the other 2 with the old fluorescent tubes look dull and tired in comparison. We plan to do the other 2 courts during the summer months and, budget allowing, the rest of the entire club in due course.

Alistair Gorrie, General Manager NSRC
