The spray-on types of sunscreen are a bonus, and I don’t get my hands all mucked up before gardening. Before venturing out into the garden, a few preventative measures are in order to avoid sprains, strains and a trip to your chiropractor. The first activity to do is to limber up. Muscles and tendons are like rubber bands, and work much more efficiently when warm and pliable. Start by going for a brisk walk as a warm-up, or marching on the spot, and then proceed to do some stretching exercis- es pre-gardening. Movements should be slow and controlled, and you should feel a gentle stretch of the muscle. Hold the position for 10 to 15 seconds, and don’t bounce or jerk. Repeat each movement two to three times. Perform the exercises again post-gardening to prevent any stiffness afterwards. Know your limitations, especially if you have spinal prob- lems. The phrase “no pain – no gain” no longer applies, except for a trip to the ER. Neck: While sitting or standing with good pos- ture, tilt head forward bringing chin down, stretching the back and sides of the neck. Keeping face forward, tip ear towards shoul- der. Repeat for other side. Shoulders: Grasp elbow with opposite hand. Pull elbow and arm towards chest until you feel a gentle stretch at back of arm, making sure shoulder isn’t hunched. Repeat with other arm. Clasp hands behind head. Press elbows back until you feel a gentle stretch at front of shoulders. Wrists: Holding arm straight out in front, point hand downward towards floor. With other hand, gently pull fingers toward you until you feel a stretch. Repeat on other side. Hold hands in front of chest, palms together, fingers pointing upward. Bend wrists down- wards until you feel a stretch in the forearms. Lower Back and Thighs: While standing, place hands firmly on hips. Bend backwards slowly until you feel a stretch, and then return to upright position. Clasp hands together over head. Lean to one side, keeping back straight until you feel a stretch in your side. Repeat with other side. Using a wall for support with one hand, grasp ankle behind you with your other hand. Slowly push leg back to stretch front of thigh, keeping thigh in line with body. Repeat with other side. These exercises are also good pre golfing (which I intend to partake in this year as I did- n’t get out to golf last year at all). Don’t try to tackle all your gardening chores at one time. Break up your chores, having a cup of tea or lemonade in between, taking the time to sit outdoors and enjoy your garden. JAMIE POST

Hello SPURR readers. My name isJamie Post. I'm pleased to take onthe editorship of the SPURR, ourlocal community newspaper. Aswest-end residents, my family andI always look forward to readingabout neighborhood events, com-munity services available to us,and shopping opportunities atlocal businesses.

Spring is here (minus any Maysnowfalls ;), greening foliage, anda 9 pm sunset provide as good anopportunity as ever to get out andabout in our neighborhoods, andas we move forward into summer, our communities also move forward into what will be a year ofchange. The BRZ has held its firstever Business/Community mixer,a wonderful opportunity to learnmore about local business, includ-ing Diane Kereluk's conceptualplans for a Holistic Urban Market, and I hope it has inspired you tolearn more about the Jasper PlaceRevitalization and consider joininga working group or gettinginvolved in your local communityleague. Wendy Kinsman has settled into her role as our new Neighborhood RevitalizationCoordinator, and is working hardwith the Revitalization's communi-ty volunteers. With an electionupcoming, the city's previous 6wards have been split into 12,while the provincial electoralboundaries commission has com-pleted public hearings in our cityregarding its interim report whichhas proposed changes to howWest-Edmonton is represented inthe Legislative Assembly.

It's been five months since thelong-running debate over a West-LRT corridor ended with CityCouncil voting to approve theStony Plain Road/104 Avenue corridor. While the city is lookingto the province, the federal government and an upcoming bidfor EXPO 2017 to provide thefunding to construct the West andSoutheast lines, city administra-tion is moving ahead with the corridor's conceptual designphase. The questions being askedduring this phase of design are:

Where the LRT will run within thecorridors?

Where will any bridges or under-passes be?

Where will stations be located?

How will they be configured?

How will vehicle access in andout of communities be impacted?

What plans are needed to

address pedestrian and cyclistimpacts?

For our communities which liebetween 163st/87ave and StonyPlain Road/142st, the city will beholding a workshop on May 6th,6pm-9pm at the MeadowlarkCommunity League Hall (15961-92ave). This is a "game changer"with the potential to set thecourse for our communities fordecades to come, and as such Iurge you to get involved.

JASPER PLACE REVITALIZATION UPDATE

WENDY KINSMAN(780) 495-0321

Hello residents, businesses andorganizations residing in the com-munities of Canora, West JasperPlace, Glenwood and BritanniaYoungstown and the outlyingcommunities who are affected bythe changes planned in theJasper Place Revitalization area.

Wendy’s Quote;

“We make a living by what we get.

We make a life by what we give.”

Sir Winston Churchill

As your Jasper PlaceRevitalization Coordinator, I havejust completed my second monthof work in this position and havethoroughly enjoyed meetingmany more people. I value yourhonesty and openness on what isimportant to you in your commu-nity and sharing your ideas onwhat needs to change. I facilitated two 1/2 day work-

shops with the Jasper PlaceRevitalization (JPR) SteeringCommittee and representativeswith from the three, JPR WorkingGroups (Connecting ourCommunity, Feeling Safe in ourCommunity and Building ourCommunity). We had the wonder-ful opportunity to have a presenta-tion by key, City of Edmonton LRTstaff, Transportation Department,to hear the next phases of the LRTPublic Involvement Plan.

LRT, TransportationDepartment Udate:You are invited to attend the nextLRT Public Workshop on Thursday,May 6, 2010 at 6:00pm atMeadowlark Community LeagueHall. Please see the add in thismonths SPURR or go towww.edmonton.ca

Committee mem-bers who attendedthe JPR Workshopidentified the

issues, concerns and obstaclesthey are currently facing. One ofthe significant issues identifiedwas lack of communicationamongst the steering committeemembers and the three JPRWorking Groups and the secondissue was spending too much timeon meeting minutes, and otheradministrative details, instead ofputting greater efforts into theactions required to realize the JPRvision. New strategies are beingwritten to include re-focus the JPRStrategy, re-structure the currentgovernance, improve informationand cohesiveness between theJPR committees and the public. The Jasper Place RevitalizationSteering Committees next stepswith representation from the threeworking groups are to write thenew actions plans for the newstrategies and incorporate theminto the Jasper Place Revitalization

Strategy. I will post these in theJune SPURR article.

I work in partnership with the StonyPlain BRZ and I am very excited tosee the incredible special eventsbeing planned over the next fewmonths. Dogapalooza is coming inSeptember, Store Front CinemaNights are coming back in Octoberand the BRZ staff are planning thefuture Holistic Urban Market, to beunveiled in October 2010. I am alsoworking in partnership with theNeighbourhood EmpowermentTeam (NET), Edmonton PoliceDepartment, Bylaw and St. Paul’sAnglican Church to plan a clean-upday for communities in the JasperPlace Revitalization area in June.More details will be forthcoming inthe June SPURR article.

I having been going on walking anddrive by tours to get to know yourcommunities. I had my Neighbour-hood and Community Developmentcolleagues, Community ServicesDepartment educate me on thecommunities of Canora andBritannia Youngstown in April.Thank you, to Tim O’Donnell,Community Recreation Coordinator,Nicole Magilton, Social Worker, andCatherine McGuire , Social Worker,

New drug program for seniors delayedExisting drug coverage for seniors continues

Proposed changes to Alberta's seniors' drug plan scheduled to take effect onJuly 1, 2010, have been delayed in order to address necessary legislative andregulatory changes and align with other government programs for seniors.

Government will continue to pay about 80% of seniors’ total drug coststhrough the existing seniors’ drug program, which remains available to allAlbertans age 65 and over. Seniors with this coverage will continue to pay aco-payment of 30 per cent of each prescription's cost to a maximum of $25 perprescription. The existing program will continue to provide coverage for prescription drugs, ambulance services, clinical psychological services, andhome nursing care.

"In 20 years, Alberta's seniors' population will have doubled from 400,000 tomore than 800,000 - an increase from 11 to 21 per cent of our population,"said Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Health and Wellness. "As a result, a comprehensive approach is needed to address the needs of an aging and rapidly expanding population, and that simply requires more time to get it right."

Questions about existing coverage should be directed to Alberta Blue Crossat 1-800-661-6995, or by email at www.ab.bluecross.ca, since they administerthe seniors' drug program for the Government of Alberta.

The Alberta Government has a clear plan for a strong economic recovery. Animportant part of The Way Forward is maintaining support for programs and services Albertans need most, such as health care, education, and safeand vibrant communities. For more information about the plan, please visitalberta.ca.

SHERI LANDRY

Holding a garage sale is a greatway to lighten the amount of stuffyou have around your house andmake some extra money whiledoing it. If you are thinking abouthaving a garage sale soon, thesetips will help you save time, makemoney and get the most of youryard sale.

Gather your items ahead oftime. In order to save yourselfsome stress at the last minutestart putting your items in boxesearly. Grab some stickers and apen and price your items beforeyou store them in boxes. You willsave yourself an evening of worktrying to price your items thenight before.

Go through your house, whenyou find an item you want to sell, price it, put the sticker on it, andstore it in the box. Store the boxaway until you are ready to holdyour sale. If you do that ahead oftime, all you have left is to takeeverything out of the boxes anddisplay them.

Make sure your items are visibly priced. Most people liketo shop around at garage saleswhere the items are clearlymarked. If your items are notmarked then people will only lookfor items they really want. Bymarking your items you mayattract someone who would haveoverlooked that item becausethey didn't want it enough to askwhat the price was.

IT MAKES CENTSDisplay your electronics andhave them either hooked up orclose to a power source. If you are selling electronics, your customers will want to know thatthey work. Having a power sourceclose by will save you time andrunning around while the sale isgoing on.

If you are selling a TV, try to haveit either on a cartoon channel, orhooked up to a DVD/VCR and playing a cartoon. Cartoons display nicely on televisions and italso acts as a great babysitter.Cartoons keep kids occupied andtheir little fingers away from yourbreakables. It also allows the parents more time to shop as thekids quietly watch a show. (Thisworked wonders at our garagesale last summer). You don't haveto have the sound going on thetelevision all day.

Price realistically. Price an itemfor what it is, not for what itmeans to you. Remember thatyou are holding a garage sale andyour buyers will be bargainhunters. It is okay to put a coupleof items in at a higher price butthe majority of your prices shouldbe a great bargain or your buyerwill check out a couple of highprices and leave because theydon't want to waste their timewhen there are other sales outthere.

In addition to pricing realistically, don't be afraid to say no if some-one offers a price that is too lowfor what you are selling. You mayget bargain hunters that come inat the beginning of a sale and willoffer a really low price. You canpolitely say that since it is the startof the day, you prefer to stay atyour price, but if they really wantto try the same offer later in the

day, you will accept their offerafter a certain time if the item isstill there.

Notify your neighbours.Advising your neighbours closestto you of the date or your desireto hold a garage sale will benefityou in a couple of ways. If thedate is far enough into the future, they may express their desire tohold a garage sale in their yard onthe same day. Turning a garagesale into a multi-family, or commu-nity garage sale makes it moredesirable to shoppers.

Telling your direct neighbours isalso a courtesy. They can preparefor the increased traffic on theirstreet or in their back lane and areusually more understanding ofpeople parked in their spot if theyknow ahead of time. It also getsyour neighbours over to yourplace to pick up some of yourstuff at a great price.

Advertise your sale. In additionto telling neighbours, there arenumerous places to advertiseyour garage sale. There are someonline sites such as kijiji.com that

have a specific section for garagesales and you can list yours forfree.

Check your community paper tosee if they print about garagesales. Print out some signs topost at your local community hall, library, church or merchants.

When advertising, put as muchinformation as possible such asthe date, time, location and someof the items you are selling toattract more buyers. If you arehaving a larger sale such as multi-family or neighbourhood sale, putthat information in too. Also, ifyou are having the garage salerain or shine, add that in as well.In the event of poor weather, people will know that you are stillopen for business.

Garage sales are a great way tounload the possessions you nolonger need and with good prepa-ration they can be an enjoyableand profitable experience.

LAURIE HAWNMP for EDMONTON CENTRE

The Government of Canada has introduced measures to ensure fairness at the gas pumps forCanadian consumers. It is estimated that each year, due to inaccurate measurement, Canadianconsumers receive a full $20 million dollars less gas than what they pay for at the pumps.

When you pull into a station to gas up, you should be guaranteed that what’s on the pump is what’s in the tank. That’s why we are taking concrete action to protect consumers from paying more than they should at the gas station and other places where goods are measured.
