THEN RING THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY ON 0800 80 70 60 WELCOME Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of the Community Voice brought to you by South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council. The catering tender for the Grove Hall catering is now complete and we are pleased to announce the A and S Catering are now providing Catering Services for us. Run by Michelin Star Chef Craig Gallimore A and S will provide catering for a whole range of events for a variety of pockets. More on the Grove Hall can be found in this newsletter. Over the last few months we have held a series of successful events at the Grove Hall. As always our Christmas Brass Band Concert was enjoyed by all. Meanwhile in March we had a ‘Last Night at the Proms’ with Rebecca Newman and the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Brass Band. Earlier in the day we had unveiled the names which had been added to the War Memorial, it was a moving event and we would like to thank our friends from the British Legion for helping us. Also in March our friends from Red Ladder Theatre Company presented ‘Wrong Un’ – a one woman musical about a suffragette which was well received by all. Finally on the Sunday before Easter we held a Kids’ Party which was sold out. It was great to see the Grove Hall grounds used and enjoyed by the local community. During the coming months we are holding a series of events which we hope will appeal to everybody. On Friday June 2nd Red Ladder will be presenting ‘The Damned United’, a play about Brian Clough’s short tenure at Leeds United. It is an excellent piece and tickets are selling fast. Meanwhile on Monday 19th June, Wakefield Theatre are bringing ‘Stand Up Stand Up’ to the Grove. Written by Jim Cartwright of ‘Little Voice’ fame, the comedy is about an unlikely partnership of a debt collector and a stand up comedian. As always we have kept ticket prices down for these two plays. More details can be found inside. Saturday July 22nd is the date of our Community Festival and we have a number of activities, events and bands lined up so there should be something for everyone. In August our friends from Hamelsworde Brewery are bringing their annual Beer Festival to the Grove. Besides a wide range of beers, ciders and other drinks there will also be live music and food will be available. All our advice services are still up and running at Moorthorpe Railway Station and we hopefully will be running more educational courses, so watch this space. Finally we would like to say goodbye to the outgoing Mayor Councillor Pat Evans and thank her for all the hard work she has done during in her time in office. We welcome our incoming Mayor Councillor Lynne Whitehouse who we hear is looking forward to the forthcoming year. Lynne will be hosting a Mayor’s charity ball later in the year. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Working alongside our friends from the Red

Ladder Theatre Company we were pleased to

present Wrong Un – a Suffragettes Story at

the Grove Hall for two shows on 8 March. The

play is a one woman musical written by Boff

Whalley and directed by Rod Hall from Red

Ladder. It tells of the trials and tribulations

of Annie Wilde, a Lancashire mill worker, and

her journey from the school room to the

prison cell. We were lucky enough to be able

to present the play on International Womens

Day. Thank you to everyone who came and

helped make it a success. Thanks to Ian Oxley

for the photographs.

On 28 April 2017 The Council, along with other organisations commemorated Workers Memorial Day at the Miners Statue outside the Grove Hall. The event

was well attended. Below are photographs from the day. Hopefully next year we will organise an evening/night time event as well so all can attend.

War memorialname UnveilingOn 31 March 2017 the names of the

fallen from both World Wars were added

to the South Kirkby War Memorial.

Previously the names had been on

wooden boards which were presented

at the War Memorial every Armistice

Day and Remembrance Sunday. Working

closely with the British Legion and the

Church the names were carved by Warner

Brothers from Moorthorpe. The day itself

was a great success with representatives

from the Kings Own Yorkshire Light

Infantry and the local British Legion

present. We would particularly like to

thank Father Tim for the service at the

memorial. Afterwards people went back

to the Grove Hall for a buffet where

photographs and other memorabilia was

on display telling the stories of some of

the names on the War Memorial. Below

are photographs from the day...

We are happy to announce that the organizing of this year’s Community Festival is well underway. We have moved the date back to later in the year with hopes we will get better weather *fingers crossed.

The date for it is Friday 21st July 7pm - 8.30pm with a Brass Band Concert at The Grove Hall, Stockingate WF9 3QF. Performed by South Kirkby Renaissance Brass Band. Tickets for the concert are on sale now and posters will be done soon. Tickets are £2 each, the bar will be open and tea & coffees will be on sale before the start, during the interval and at the end of the performance. Please call into The Grove office for tickets. We are open 9am - 4.30pm Monday - Thursday until 4pm on Fridays to get tickets.

The 2nd half of the celebrations take place on Saturday 22nd July 11am - 9pm which will be the Gala Day And Party And The Park all on one day instead of split into two days like last year - which we hope will lead to a better, fuller festival on the field with much more going on throughout the day on The Barnsley Road Recreation Ground (South Kirkby Green Park). The main posters are coming soon but are not completed yet. Below is a preview of some of the things that will be on during the day. The posters will contain more definitive information. Look out on our Facebook page, website or Community Festival Facebook for updates, alternatively you can come into our office for info.

DefibrillatorsA defibrillator is a medical device that can be used by non-medical people. It checks the heart rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. They are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest.

South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council has purchased four defibrillators which are at the following locations:

• Millennium Hall, barnsley road, Moorthorpe

• Moorthorpe railway station

• burntwood community centre, church top, south kirkby

• south kirkby colliery welfare club (the cricket club), stockingate, south kirkby

If you need to use a defibrillator, please call 999 and you will be told what to do.

tHe VaLue of tHe defibriLLatorSouth Kirkby Colliery Cricket Club had a dramatic start to their season on the 22nd April 2017 when the 2nd Xl were playing Garforth in the Pontefract & District League.Garforth batted first, but during their innings batsman collapsed at the crease and stopped breathing, SKCCC members Cheryl Blanchard and Mark Harris took charge of the situation and brought into use the Defibrillator, provided and sited by South Kirkby & Moorthorpe Town Council.Cheryl and Mark are both trained in how to use the defibrillator and successfully brought Andrew back, his was rushed to Pinderfields Hospital and following treatment is on his way to a full recovery. This story highlights the value of the defibrillator and having trained people available to use it when required. As Andrew says, it saved his life something he and his family and friends will be forever grateful.

Stand Up Stand Up is a dark comedy, hilarious and heartbreaking in turns.

A struggling comedian meets a bailiff, sounds like the start of a gag, but heralds an unlikely alliance that leads them both on a life changing roller coaster of an adventure neither would have ever expected.

It is as if Can’t Pay? We’ll Take It Away! met with Live at the Apollo and spontaneously combusted.

From the internationally acclaimed writer whose many award-winning plays include Road, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice (winner of both an Olivier Award and Evening Standard Best Comedy) Award and Two.

For over forty years the Town Council has provided a summer play scheme free of charge for the children of our community. The aim of the play scheme is to provide

children with the opportunity to participate in and experience a wide range of fun and enjoyable activities and games organised in a safe and secure environment.

This year the play scheme will be held from 31st July to 25th august for children of 8-14 years

at south kirkby colliery welfare club (the ‘cricket club’).

The daily start/finish times will be 9.30am to 3.30pm
