Internet and e-commerce continue to disseminate fear, however it’s estimated that online sales presently amount to 20% of total retail sales, thus 80% of retail purchases still take place in brick-and-mortar stores. It’s also forecasted that, while e-commerce will continue to grow over the next several years, it will peak at around 30%.

This information tells us that traditional stores aren’t going away. While some product categories are more vulnerable to being replaced by digital outlets (books, electronics, offi ce products, etc.), others are more insulated. The Spa Industry is defi nitely among the best protected from a digital takeover because skincare services require human contact and interaction that cannot be delivered by an Apple product (yet). But what about retail cleansers, toners, moisturizing cremes in retail size? Well, we know that the vast majority of product purchases are still, and will continue to be, made in person and that applies more to skincare than any other category.

Besides the obvious difference made by the esthetician’s product recommendation, shoppers still prefer to shop in person because they:

• may need the product immediately• may appreciate the service• may prefer seeing and touching the product• may not risk getting the wrong product, damaged goods or risk a

shipping delay• may want to be sure that what they purchase is not a counterfeited,

expired or stolen item

As you read above, I am sure you understand that you have excellent chances to compete and win against the Internet. The recipe is simple: always keep products in stock, readily available; offer outstanding service and advice; have testers and samples within reach for your clients to “feel” the product; reassure your clients that you are an authorized and offi cial Guinot spa by proudly displaying the Guinot logo, images, certifi cates. You have the best right there in your spa, why go anywhere else?
