ST. ALBERT FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES

Neighbourhood DevelopmentBuilding a “Sense of Community and Connectedness” is an important goal for Neighbourhood Development. As one of the five key values identified by residents for the City of St. Albert Social Master Plan, residents know it is important too. But where do you start?

Host a Block Party! Hosting a block party is one of the easiest ways to begin building a sense of community in your neighbourhood. Bring your neighbours together for a relaxed afternoon or evening of fun and food. The City of St. Albert partners with Neighbourhood Watch and Citizen’s Patrol to provide a lot of resources to make your block party a success. This includes:• Free games and recreation equipment• Free Fire and Street Closure permits• Free hamburgers, hot dogs and buns• And more...

Block Party Boot Camp If you are thinking of hosting your first Block Party or looking for new ideas, join the Neighbourhood Development team for a Block Party Boot Camp! Learn more about the resources available to you and how to register your party. You can also talk to Neighbourhood Development staff, people who have hosted block parties in the past, community police, fire officials and more. Join us on Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. at the St. Albert Public Library.

For more information about Block Parties:• Visit the web site at stalbert.ca/block-party-information• Contact Angie at [email protected] or 780-459-1756.

Neighbourhood Network A sense of community is built over time through regular opportunities to meet and get to know your neighbours. Join the Neighbourhood Network to learn more about how you can engage your neighbours beyond a yearly block party. The Neighbourhood Network is a group of residents who care about their neighbourhoods and want to build community. They have lots of ideas and experience to share. Everyone is welcome to their monthly gatherings! For more information or to join, contact Angie at [email protected].

Community DevelopmentThe Staff of FCSS collaborate with community members to build on strengths and generate solutions to community concerns.

Partnerships include:• Strategy & Mobilization Committee• Family Working Group• Seniors’ Working Group• Youth Working Group• Temporary Residential Services Committee• Wrap Around Committee• and others as identified by the community

St. Albert Rental Assistance Program Available to residents of St. Albert, the subsidy is provided through provincial money the City of St. Albert received to help address homelessness and affordable housing in the community. Through the generous support of United Way, a Rental Assistance Program Coordinator has been hired to assist in the implementation of this program.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet all the following requirements:• 18 years of age or older• Resident of St. Albert for a minimum of six months• Currently renting• Pay more than 30 per cent of gross monthly income towards

rent and heat• There are other residency, income and asset requirements that

must be met

Please note the Rental Assistance program funding is limited. The subsidy amount will vary depending on income vs. rent/heat costs. The coordinator is located at the St. Albert Food Bank & Community Village, please call 780-722-0135 for further information or to apply.

Community and Protective Services Subsidy ProgramThe City of St. Albert’s Community & Protective Services has a subsidy for low-income individuals and families wanting to take a City of St. Albert program. This Subsidy Program provides access to City of St. Albert programs that promote active, healthy lifestyles to those who are not able to afford them. To apply: Contact Donna Blanchard at Community & Protective Services, 780-459-1755 ext. 3077.

Family and School Liaison ProgramThe Family and School Liaison Program provides family centered support and counselling for children who are experiencing difficulties at school or at home. This is a confidential, free service for St. Albert children and families. For consultation or information, please contact Sharon Mills at 780-459-1699 or Tonia Koversky at 780-459-1749.

A Balanced Approach to Youth SportsBeing involved in a sport is a lot different for today’s young people than it was for their parents or grandparents. Kids start younger, train harder, play more often, forego other activities, and feel more pressure. For some, this means the horizons are broader and brighter than ever. Sometimes, however, sports takes over a family’s life as parents shuttle between home and practice or games, spend thousands of dollars on equipment, and drag younger siblings along or leave them at home. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. With a little bit of support and guidance from you, your children can find great fun and healthy ways to include athletics as one part of a well-rounded life.

Parents with children ages 6 to 9• Offer encouragement and praise for participation rather than

achievement. At this age, it’s best to focus on enjoyment of the activity rather than mastery.

• Avoid comparing players to one another, making comments (even positive ones) about players’ abilities, or complaining about mistakes or missed opportunities. Instead, emphasize and highlight positive attitudes and experiences.

Parents with children ages 10 to 15• Encourage your child to try at least one new sport or physical

activity each year or two. They may feel like everyone around them has already “picked what they do,” but most likely, that’s not the case.

• Help your children think about what they enjoy and don’t enjoy about each of their activities. Make a “pros and cons” list if it helps. Some children will have very strong opinions about which things they want to do, and others will need more parental direction and guidance.

Parents with children ages 16 to 18• Monitor your teens’ health habits, especially if they are seriously

involved in sports. Are they eating well, getting enough sleep, doing what they can to avoid injury? Stay connected with your children and their coaches so you know what’s happening with the team and with training.

• If you have a teenager who is seriously into a sport (or multiple sports) celebrate that while also promoting balance for the entire family. This could mean taking turns attending events, making sure that there is at least a short “off season” when your teen’s body can rest and recover from intense training, talking about what’s most important to you as a family and as individuals, and being flexible about finding time to just be together when you’re not focusing on a sport.

www.stalbertfrc.ca EARLY LEARNING PROGRAMS - PARENTED

Parented programs are an excellent way to introduce children to activities outside of the home. Our qualified instructors will mentor and provide creative activities designed to enhance and enrich your child’s learning experience. Your child will get to know our staff and become comfortable in our centre, while staying reassured that mom or dad is still with them. Our “Playtime” drop-in program is a wonderful first step for social interaction in very young children.

EARLY LEARNING PROGRAMS - UNPARENTED Our un-parented programs help children and their parents work through separation anxiety and develop independence in a safe and caring early childhood setting. Children will experience an engaging environment with an abundance of hands-on activities. This includes our ever popular Discover & Learn programs and our Preschool. Unparented programs are a great step towards preparing your child for preschool & kindergarten.

PARENTING PROGRAMS Parenting success is strongly linked to informal, community-based supports and the availability of quality parenting resources and programs. Our weekly drop-in programs give parents the opportunity to socialize with others facing the same parenting issues and discuss a wide variety of topics in a safe & informative environment. Our registered courses target specific parenting trends and issues offering practical strategies to suit the needs of any growing family.

CHILD & YOUTH PROGRAMS Our Child & Youth programs are designed for school aged children 12 and under. They are offered throughout the summer, on school breaks & PD days as well as in the evenings. These group programs focus on goal development, relationship building, mental health, cooperation, creativity and much much more! Our qualified instructors encourage group participation by fostering a laid back and multi-stimulus environment.

Spring/Summer Programs 2015Sometimes it is good to get away. When we get away, we step back from the ordinary routine. We rest and relax; we allow ourselves to be renewed. We take time simply ‘to be,’ instead of always ‘doing.’ We have time for listening and learning, sharing and reflecting. Star of the North invites you to an Away Days Retreat. Each Away Day will focus on a different contemporary spiritual book. Through a combination of presentations and reflective time, we will explore the themes and ideas of the authors, and apply their insights to our lives. It is not necessary to have read the books.

Celebrating the spirit of mystics in our religious history offers us an opening for giving voice to our own wisdom both individually and communally for our times. These coming evenings we will explore the wisdom of some notable male mystics. The evening will begin with dinner followed by a presentation. What is the gift of wisdom to be expressed through us for our times? Please register by one week before program date.

The Soul is that part of us which is never separate from the Holy One, while the Self (also called Ego or Personality) is the vehicle through which we engage with life. Come away for a weekend of discovery and renewal, where you can honour your Self’s true purpose as a unique conduit for Soul expression. Four rhythms of spirituality will be explored - being conscious, centred, connected and committed - with opportunities for meditation, private reflection and engagement with others. An environment of safety will be cultivated where no one is made to feel uncomfortable, with a recognition that each journey with the Soul-Self unfolds gradually and is deeply personal. Facilitator: Sherry Dahl

Nurturing Your Soul-Self

3A St. Vital Ave. St. Albert, T8N 1K1

To be human, is to have a story, to tell a story, to be a story. Our personal and collective wisdom tales have transformative power. These inspirational vignettes, become our teachers. Wisdom, gleaned from reflected upon life experience and drawn gently into our imaginations, deepens our connections to self and others. Like an inner “sage” or “guru”, stories offer us doorways into new ways of seeing and being in the world. This “micro-workshop” will take us to a place, called “once upon a time….” In this special realm, stories from across the millennia, including Scripture and other traditions will provide spiritual guideposts. Stories familiar and new, will offer life giving “medicine” to sooth our mind, bodies and spirits. Facilitator: Dan Jelinski

Over 25 Years Experience

WEDDING DANCE LESSONS!the fun starts long before the wedding day!

“We spent 4 months taking both group and private lessons with Sabrina to work on our first dance. Taking both types of lessons was really valuable as the group sessions gave us more opportunity to work on general technique while the private lessons gave us that personal time to work specifically on our dance. We found it great bonding time during the busy wedding planning and helped us feel much more connected to each other. Thank you so much Sabrina for adding to our special day!” ~ Carla & Ryan (pictured)

It’s your big day and you want to look great and have a first dance that is as special and unique as the two of you! You may want to have a father/daughter, mother/son dance too. Learn the steps to feel confident and relaxed while you dance the night away! Whatever your goals, with over 25 years of instructional experience, Sabrina’s Dance Instruction will listen to you and help you create the look you want for your dance. For those of you who have the honor of taking part in the celebration - the parents, the wedding party, the guests, you too can learn some moves to look AND feel great on the dance floor. Whether private lessons or joining together with others - your dance lessons become a rare time when you can forget about everything else and enjoy being in each other’s arms.

Private Lessons Make your first dance unique and magical - from classic to spectacular!

PYGMALION

ABOUT THE SCHOOLEstablished in 1992 by professional artist Dixie Orriss, Pygmalion provides small classes with one on one instruction that brings out each student’s creativity and enables them to discover the joy of art.

The methods taught are derived from a Lithuanian Master who studied with Matisse and passed on his techniques to Orriss’ mentors.

Students who come to Pygmalion are more competent and progress artistically at a much faster rate due to the quality of instruction that is offered.
