Innovation and Collaboration AwardsWe are thrilled to announce the Innovation and Collaboration Awards!

With the goal of fostering a community of practice among area organizations and professionals, awards will be given for innovative projects that reach across institutions to serve the greater Chicago Jewish community.

Awards will be presented in two tracks, one specifically for Spertus Institute Alumni and the other open to anyone.

Deadline is April 2. To submit or nominate a project, visit spertus.edu/2015Awards.

Awardees will be announced on April 21, 2015 (see page 13). Awardees will receive professional assistance and financial support for their project.

Community Mentoring ProjectIt is our pleasure to announce the 2015 Community Mentoring Project for Jewish Professionals, a new initiative designed to strengthen the knowledge, effectiveness, and strategic agility of our community’s current and future organizational leaders.

This opportunity is available to those in regular paid positions with Chicago-area organizations that serve the Jewish community. Those selected will be paired with a seasoned professional from outside their own organization for five one-on-one sessions.

David Edell has dedicated his career to making a difference in the nonprofit sector. Following more than a decade in senior positions at UJA-Federation of New York, he co-founded the Development Resource Group (DRG) to address concerns about finding, fostering, and retaining leaders. His work has centered on high-level executive searches for organizations that affect positive change in the world.

Annual Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Jerusalem Lecture

In 1995, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin visited Israel. A center-piece of his visit was a talk he gave on the theological issues affecting Jewish-Catholic relations. The Bernardin Jerusalem Lecture series continues this dialogue.

This lecture series is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Chicago, the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, the Chicago Board of Rabbis, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, and Spertus Institute.

Co-sponsors for 2015 are DePaul University’s University Ministry-Religious Studies, Center for Interreligious Engagement-Catholic Studies, Center for Jewish Law and Judaic Studies, Center for Intercultural Programs, and Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity.

The Upsurge of Antisemitism and the Future of Jewish Life in Europe Antisemitism in many European countries is on the rise. Despite condemnations by top leaders, there has been little political action taken in response. The situation is fueling concern within Jewish communities, particularly amongst young people, about their future in Europe. Deidre Berger, Director of AJC Berlin’s Ramer Institute, will discuss the challenges, concerns, and future options for Jews living in Europe today.

Deidre Berger is the Director of the AJC Berlin Office/Lawrence and Lee Ramer Institute for German-Jewish Relations and a frequent lecturer on European security affairs, German-Jewish relations, and issues of extremism. Prior to joining AJC, Ms. Berger worked as a foreign correspondent. She reported on European affairs for NPR, Deutsche Welle (the German international radio and television service), the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, and the Christian Science Monitor.

In 1939, the SS St. Louis, carrying 900 Jews attempting to flee Nazi Germany, sailed from Hamburg bound for Havana. After being turned away by Cuba, the US, and Canada, the ship was forced to return to Europe. Among the passengers were Alex Goldschmidt and his 17-year-old son Helmut, who spent the next three years in one French camp after another before being shipped to Auschwitz.

Sixty-nine years later, Martin Goldsmith, Alex’s grandson and Helmut’s nephew, retraced their journey, spending six weeks and traveling more than 5,700 miles. Alex’s Wake is his eyewitness report.

Martin Goldsmith is the Peabody-winning classical music host of Symphony Hall on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. For ten years he hosted NPR’s daily classical music program, Performance Today. In his first book, The Inextinguishable Symphony, he told his parent’s story of participation in the Jewish Kulturbund, a performing arts ensemble exploited as propaganda by the Nazis.

Rav KookMystic in a Time of RevolutionSpertus faculty member Dr. Joshua Shanes leads a book discussion about Rav Kook: Mystic in a Time of Revolution by Yehudah Mirsky. The book delves into the fascinating life of one of the most influential and controversial rabbis of the 20th century. Rav Kook was the first chief rabbi of Jewish Palestine and the founding theologian of religious Zionism. His life and writings resonate with the defining tensions of Jewish life and thought. Reading of the book in advance not required.

Dr. Joshua Shanes is Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at the College of Charleston. He has published widely on Jewish cultural and political history.

A Bintel Brief: Love and Longing in Old New YorkAs the 19th century drew to a close and the 20th century began, a surge of Jewish immigrants arrived on American shores. Struggling to assimilate to the ways of their new world, men and women shared their personal hopes and fears with Abraham Cahan, legendary editor of the Jewish Daily Forward and creator of its enormously popular advice column. The column was called A Bintel Brief—Yiddish for “A Bundle of Letters”—and it spoke with unparalleled immediacy to both the humor and heartbreak of the immigrant experience.
