Principal’s report continued……

2018 Student Attitude to School Survey

We have received the preliminary report from the 2018 Student Attitudes to School Survey. It looks at

school results but displays no comparison across the state or with previous years, however the initial

reports shows improvement across the board in Years 4-6 compared to the 2017 Attitude to School

Survey. Below are three measures we had targeted in the 2018 Annual Implementation Plan.

2018 Parent Opinion Survey

WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey

is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a

sample of randomly selected parents.

It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate,

student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and

direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

Approximately 30 per cent of our parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses

to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 23rd

July to Sunday 26th August. More information will be sent to the selected families this week.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any

convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The

online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English.

The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. Last year, the Parent

Opinion Survey indicated that parents were very satisfied with the school which affirmed the school’s

organisation.

Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information.

Athletics Day

June 21st wasn’t just the longest day of the year, it was the day the Year 3-6 Athletics were held at Landy

Field. The weather once again provided perfect conditions. An extremely successful day with fun to be had

by all.

Thank-you to Ric Thompson and Lauren Roberts for organising another great event with support from

staff and parents. Once again, cheeky commentating by Ben McCredden and a very competitive sprint by

staff.

Recess and Lunch Eating Times

Thank you to those families who completed the survey relating to our trial on changing recess and lunch

time eating times. We are currently assessing all the data and will let you know what the final decision

will be. In the meantime, eating time will continue after play time.

SAME—DAY NOTIFICATION OF UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES

Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps

ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of

absence using one of the following methods:

Online: log the absence directly onto COMPASS

Telephone: the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absences and

reason.

Email: the school and provide the staff with your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.

Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent?

Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school.

From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers

as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a

particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as

‘unexplained.’

This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most

important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them

behind.

What is your responsibility?

let the school know in advance of any upcoming absences

or let them know in the morning if your child won’t be at school.

In order for schools to implement the same day notification requirement, it’s essential that you provide

the school with your most up-to-date contact details.

Generally one notification will be sent per family. Should there be circumstances that require both

parents and carers to be notified, please contact the school to make the necessary arrangements.

What is the school’s responsibility?

The school must notify you of an unexplained absence in relation to your child as soon as practicable on

the same day. We will let you know via SMS through COMPASS at 10.30am each morning if your child is

not accounted for at school and you have not notified the school as to why.

Ask us for a copy of the Attendance Policy which outlines the school’s processes and procedures for

monitoring, recording and following-up of student absences.

Hello Clifton Springs Primary School, my name is Luke Smith and I have the pleasure of taking over 3/4K from Kellie Holwerda. I have been a teacher for 6 years and have spent the last 3 years teaching in the western suburbs of Melbourne. I love teaching all subjects but I am most passion about using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) to make learning more hands-on and give everybody a chance to learn new skills. I especially love using different types of robotics and how they are programmed. Outside of school I try to get outdoors as much as possible with my kids, riding bikes, fishing and camping. I look forward to meeting many of you and becoming part of the Clifton Springs community. Luke Smith

Important Information- OSHC

It is really important for families using OSHC to do a Centrelink Child Care Assessment now,

if you have not already.

You can do your assessment through myGov using your Centrelink online account. Or,

through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

This is important, because if you don’t do your assessment, your child care fee assistance

may be disrupted and/or you may have to pay full fees.

Please do this as soon as possible. To find out more, visit education.gov.au/childcare

LUNCH ORDERS HOW TO CANCEL AN ORDER DUE TO ABSENCE

Thank you to those families who have been trialling our new online lunch order system with the Fresh Lunch Fairy!

If you need to cancel an online order because your child is away on the Friday, contact Christine either via email [email protected] OR phone: 0424 654109

by 8.30am on the Friday morning and a refund will be credited to your card within 24hrs.

Unfortunately, if she is not contacted to cancel the order in time, the lunch will be made and payment will be non refundable.

All feedback welcome!

USE OF FRONT DOOR We request that STUDENTS & FAMILIES

DO NOT use the front door before 9am to drop children to class or to collect students at 3.30pm unless accessing the disabled car park

If you drop your child off for school on the paddock side of school,

your child should not enter the building until 8:50am and needs to

enter via the room they line up at, NOT the front door. They

should exit via the classroom external door & walk around the

building to the car park

We appreciate your assistance with this.

HOUSE ATHLETICS A big congratulations goes out to all students in Year 3-6 that competed in the House Athletics on June

21st last term. The House spirit displayed by our students was sensational. There were many personal

best efforts on the day and I hope some students found a skill or an activity they loved. Athletics is a

wonderful sport in itself or as a way to build the foundation for other sports.

Our staff worked tirelessly on the day and a huge thank you goes out to them from me. We also

had many parent volunteers. Days like these only flow well with many people helping, so thanks to

the volunteers who gave up their personal time to help us.

The results were really close but the day was won by Springs Sharks with Bayshore Bats in second, Dell

Dolphins third and Coriyule Cockatoos in fourth. Thanks to the House Captains who had a busy day

getting relay teams ready, competing themselves and getting their House team spirit going.

Those students selected in the School team for the District Athletics will be made aware in the coming

weeks. The District Athletics will be held at Landy Field on August 28th.

Thanks, Ric Thompson and Lauren Roberts, PE Teachers

BETHANY 2018 FATHER OF THE YEAR AWARD

In its 19th year the award; Celebrates the role of fathers and male role models through the eyes of children Acknowledges the important role men play in families and the community and Raises awareness of Bethany’s service for men.

Bethany recognises that modern families are diverse and that not all children have a father in their lives. As such we encourage children to nominate any special man in their life (a sports coach, another relative, a teacher etc.) to be 2018 Father of the Year.

Nominations open Monday July 16th and close Monday August 13th

Entries will be judged on the age of the child and the following criteria; Evidence of a positive relationship with the child Specific qualities that are valued in that person The way the child describes the type of person he is Evidence of positive role-modelling and/or responsible parenting.

Raising Hopeful Resilient Kids Think of two children who you have regular contact with: one who is resilient and happy, and one who is

struggling and languishing. Imagine you are interviewing each of them and you ask them to rate their

response to these six questions:

I think I am doing pretty well

I can think of many ways to get the things in life that are important to me

I am doing just as well as other kids my age

When I have a problem I can come up with lots of ways to solve it

I think the things I have done in the past will help me in the future

Even when others want to quit, I can find ways to solve the problem.

Chances are that the child who is resilient will respond affirmatively to these items. The child who is

struggling is more likely to say ‘no’ than ‘yes’.

These items form the basis of the internationally-recognised Children’s Hope Scale that is used to assess

the hopefulness of children and teens. Hope is a critically important predictor of their wellbeing and

resilience.

1. Rationale: I. To create and promote a sense of collective and individual pride in students, and their identification

with the school and the school colours of royal blue and gold. II. To ensure that clothing worn to school is neat, clean, safe and inoffensive.

2. Aims: I. The student dress code will apply during school hours and when travelling to and from school, and

when students are engaged in school activities outside of school hours. II. Broad brimmed or legionnaire’s hats in school colours must be worn as set out in the CSPS Sunsmart

policy, from the start of September to the end of April. III. The wearing of jewellery is not permitted, except for watches, stud and sleeper earrings. IV. Appropriate footwear must be worn. No high heeled shoes or open toed sandals. V. Plain socks (either black, white, navy blue or royal blue) must be worn. No stripes or spots. Tights or

leggings are to be in royal or navy blue. VI. Nails are to be of a safe length and only clear coloured nail polish is allowed. VII. Skin transfers and make-up (except for clear lip gloss / chap stick) are not to be worn. VIII. Collar length hair must be tied back for health and safety reasons and hair colour to an extreme shade

is not permitted. Fringes must not be so long as to impede vision. IX. Winter kilts or box pleat skirts may not be worn higher than the knee.

3. Implementation: I. The process for exemptions from a dress code is set out in the School Policy and Advisory Guide. The

operational tasks of granting exemptions on the basis of the grounds stated in the dress code, and the administrative decisions associated with its enforcement belong to the management role of the Principal.

II. School leadership will when needed, make recommendations to the School Council as to items of approved School Uniform.

III. In deciding school clothing items, consideration will be given to cost, practicality, health, safety and availability, ensuring that both sexes are able to participate actively and safely.

IV. The main supplier of school uniforms is A-Plus Uniforms, Belmont. This contract will be reviewed annually.

V. Some uniform items (without insignia), hats, bags and second hand clothing items will be available for purchase at the school office.

VI. The school community will be regularly kept informed of the student dress code requirements through the school newsletter and on the school website.

VII. Prospective students and parents will be notified of the dress code requirements prior to enrolment at the school.

VIII. Parents are required to provide a note of explanation in the student’s diary for an infringement of the dress code. For a child out of uniform for more than one day, the classroom teacher will contact the parents and assess the situation, which will include a standard proforma which requires a parent signature. The Assistant Principal will be notified if lack of uniform compliance continues.

IX. If parents are having difficulty providing a uniform, arrangements can be made with the Principal. (eg, second hand uniforms, State Schools Relief Fund, KIND funding).

X. Year 6 students will have the option to purchase individual polo shirts or rugby tops with a specific design for that year.

XI. Summer and Winter uniform options are available, as are female uniform options, eg dresses, kilts and skirts, however students are not limited to wearing specific options in set terms, nor are females required to wear female uniform options.
