  • 9These are professional BBQ cooks who travel around the country smok-

ing their meats for trophies, prize money and most importantly the

prestige of outdoing their competition. As I walked through the

grounds, I couldnt help but notice the laughter and goodwill between

these competitors, but there is an underlying current of seriousness.

These guys and gals know what they are doing. Each group has their

unique techniques and super secrets. I dared to ask one for his rub

recipe and got laughed at like I just told the best joke in the world!

These teams compete in smoking briskets, ribs, chicken and pork butts.

They are judged by professional judges and have a competition for

Peoples Choice, where I could taste the food and judge, which I

thought, was best. I have no idea how the judges could decide because

everything I tasted was just delicious.

There is a more serious side to these smoking experts and that was evi-

dent as I saw banners on some of the trailers and trucks that advertised

their membership in OBR, which is Operation BBQ Relief. As you

remember back in May 2011, Joplin was hit hard with tornadoes that

devastated most of the town. Stan Hays, Jeff Stith and Will Cleaver,

who are all BBQ cooks, decided to call some of their competitive team

friends. With help from some sponsors they all went down to Joplin

and set up cooking stations to feed all the displaced families and first

responders. In the twoweeks they were there, they served over 120,000

meals. The success in Joplin was so immeasurable and life changing for

everyone involved, these men decided to form a non-profit disaster

relief organization called Operation BBQ Relief.

    continued on page 22

    THESE GUYS ARE

If you have never attended a BBQ contest then you havemissed out on a lot of fun and a lot of good food. I justattended the annual charity Smokin On Big Creek BBQcontest organized by Jeff Stith and Stan Hays, where I hadtime to walk from BBQ station to station and watch theseexpert cooks at work.

  • ExpandingNew Location!

The Council of Churches announced the expansion of Ambassadors for Children in March! This is made possible by a generous pledge through the Council of Churches Foundation to match, dollar-for-dollar, all donations for our expan-sion project up to $150,000 over the next 3 years. This Renewing Hope campaign will help sustain Ambassadors for Children in a new 4,000 square foot office to continue services for local abused and neglected children. This lays the foundation to serve up to an addi-tional 1,500 abused and neglected chil-dren from surrounding counties within the next three years.

Our new office will open in mid June 2012 and will feature all programs in 1 location, including: The Kids Clothes Closet, Tutoring Program and tutor re-source library, Project Self-Esteem, Pack-a-Bag program, Adopt-a-Case-worker, and Christmas program. These programs have provided resources and support to over 6,000 local abused and neglected children (including foster chil-dren) and their caregivers. The Pro-grams focus specifically on enhancing the self-esteem and self worth of mal-treated children so they may be empow-ered to realize their potential and abil-ity to break a family cycle of abuse and neglect. Our expansion creates a 1-stop resource center for foster children and families, renewing hope for children, for families, and for our community.

For nearly four years we have been offering customers a

great deal on choice merchandise as donated by the good

people of the Ozarks. People donate to us daily as to ben-

efit the recipients of our store profits; we rotate our

donations quarterly to the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield,

the Ozark Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America and

the Girl Scouts of the Heartland. The companywas formed

under a plan of social entrepreneurship and evolved into

    a recognized 501 3 in July of 2011.

YOTO Thrift Store specializes in furniture, gently used

clothing and a fine selection of general merchandise

including but not limited to collectibles, antiques, retro

and vintage dcor. We also offer our customers a ton of

dcor items from such name brand stores as Pier One,

Kirklands, Hallmark and more. We take these unwanted

items in, clean and select the best stuff and then put it on

our retail shelves at low, low prices. Last fall we added a

special weekly sale to Mondays when we made ALL

General Merchandise 50% off all day long. This sets nicely

alongside our 50% off all clothes, shoes, purses, belts and

accessories every Wednesday. We also routinely run 50%

off sales on furniture, books, framed art, TVs, lamps and

    mattresses.

YOTO Thrift Store is dedicated to the principals of recy-

cling, reducing and reusing and makes very efficient use

of the items we are given. We are a little proud of the fact

that we have the smallest dumpster of any major thrift

store in town. Items that we dont sell, we recycle for

profit and includes clothing, shoes, purses, belts, pillows,

toys and books to name a few.

We are open Monday-Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday

    10am-5pm at 2140 S. Campbell Avenue. Just 2.5 blocks

south of Bass Pro, 1 block north of the original Ziggies and

directly across the street from Ricks Automotive. We do

NOT charge sales tax because we are a not-for-profit

agency. We also accept donations of YOUR unwanted

inventory six days a week. Feel free to give us a call with

    any questions at all (417-890-7283).

If you have come to The Humane Society

of Southwest Missouri and adopted a

pet or you already own a pet, one of the

    most important health decisions youll

make is to spay or neuter your cat or

dog. Spay/Neuteringwill vastly improve your pets behavior, keep him close to home and offers

    lifelong health benefits.

Spaying your four-legged family members helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer,

which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before

her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases. Besides preventing unwanted lit-

ters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer, if done before six months

of age. Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families. On the other

hand, unneutered dogs and cats may mark their territory by spraying strong-smelling urine

all over the house and many aggression problems can be avoided by early neutering.

Stray animals pose a real problem in many parts of the country. They can prey on wildlife,

cause car accidents, and frighten children. Every year, millions of cats and dogs of all ages and

breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays. These high numbers are the result of unplanned

litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering.

The Importance of Spaying/Neutering Your Pet!

    ConnectingVolunteers withNonprofits

Wouldnt it be great to be able to go online and fill out a simple application allowing you to select several nonprofits you would like to volunteer for? To be able to enter your schedule availability, your skills and your favorite type of volunteer work?

With a Volunteer Database, we can do just that. With a little help from a caring community, we can add this great feature to our web site. A Nonprofit can log in and search for volunteers based on availability, skills and more.

t Additional Features will include Sporting Events and other events that might conflict with a Nonprofit Event.

t The community will be able to filter their search results depending on the type of event they are looking to attend.

Assisting in Event Schedulingand Awareness of Events

One of the challenges facing Nonprofits is the difficulty in spreading the news about an upcoming event and figuring out WHEN to schedule an event so they wont conflict with others.

We are working to raise funds for a Nonprofit Community Calen-dar. The Calendar will allow the Nonprofits to log in and add the event information, press release and flyer to our web site. Once they hit submit, our web site will send the information out to all of the Media Outlets available in the area! What a great way to get the word out and create a true Community Calendar.

    THESEGUYSARESSSSSSSSSSMOKIN!continued from page 9............................................................

Operation BBQ Relief was modeled after the Joplin experience. OBR is now deployed for

disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and tornadoes. These volunteer

cook teams are always on the move and ready at any moment. With the help from teams,

volunteers, and sponsors such as Sams Club and Stubbs BBQ, OBR has served in seven other

disasters and have given just over 150,000 hot meals in just one year since its creation.

Last week OBR ended their most recent operation down in Royse City and Forney, Texas.

In conjunction with cook teams, a number of volunteers and helpful corporate sponsors,

they were able to serve just over 2,500 meals. As I write this on April 15, there have been

news reports of multiple tornadoes in theMidwest and OBR is deciding where they will be

    most needed.

You can help whether you cook or not. Visit their web site and join them on Facebook to

become involved or to make a donation. This is a perfect and most amazing example of

communities coming together to help others in need.

  • Not too fast...preliminary steps tostrategic planning

trategic planning is simply themethods or strategies you use

to get your work done. In my 25 years of public health expe-

rience, Ive seen more than one organization engage in the

strategic planning process. Someone once said to me,

Everyone has their own perception of reality. That is, does

your staff know the mission of the agency? Ive witnessed

agencies that have several versions of a mission. Do they

know all the activities, the outputs, and the desired outcomes

of that work? If you asked your staff to identify each of these

elements, would there be congruence?Would they give you

similar answers? I suggest the following exercise to bring

    everyone to the center:

    S

    24

  • Convene your group of staff in a room that is not too large, but offers an intimate setting.

On thewall, place thewords in the bulleted list below on paper large enough to be seen from

    the back of the room.

Provide a stack of sticky notes and colorful markers. Tell them they are charged with record-

ing words or phrases in response to the following questions. Do one element at a time.

Introduce each of the six elements and ensure they understand their meaning. One answer

per sticky note. Participants place their answers under each of the elements on the wall.

Mission. What is [agency name]mission statement (word for word if they can)? For exam-ple is it to raise funds or reduce burden of disease?

Inputs. What existing resources does [agency name] have that allows us to do our work(e.g., money, time, funding, community support)?

Activities: What are the activities of our agency (e.g., health fairs, screenings, educa-tion, advocacy)?

Outputs: What are the direct results of our activities? For example, if you hold healthfairs in the community, then an output would be distribution of X number of pamphletson blood pressure, for example. Or, it could be a policy is developed or number of meet-ings with legislators.

Outcomes. What are the outcomes as a result of our activities? Outcomes can be cate-gorized as short, mid-term, and long-term (e.g., from changes in knowledge, skills, attitudes to policies and practice to eventually reductions in disease and death rates. Donot confuse them with outputs, as outcomes tend to be harder to achieve.

Contextual Factors. What are the challenges in our environment that keep us fromachieving our mission (e.g., morale, economy, geography, cultural beliefs)?

When finished, gather all of the sticky notes, keeping them separated by element. The facil-

itator can either ask the group to organize each of the responses by grouping duplicates or

they can prepare a report. You could extend this exercise and vote on the accuracy of

    responses. If your responses are similar, then your staff are grounded and on the same page;

If there are dissimilar answers, then some discussion are in order. Either way, your staff will

    feel heard.

Pam states that foster parenting was something she

was born to do. She says, My parents were foster

parents when I was a child. After school, I would run

out to my parents car and peek in the window to see

if they had picked up a new baby that day. Pam

remembers those times fondly. She grew upwanting

to help others and care for children who needed love.

When she and Dennis decided to become foster par-

ents 19 years ago, they knew their hearts and their

    family would be

    forever changed

    for the better.

    Dennis and Pam

    agree that their

    motto as foster

    parents has al-

    ways been there

    can never be too

    many people to

    love a child.

    Their family and

    friends have been

    supportive of their

decision to foster children in need. When placedwith

Dennis and Pam, the children become a part of their

family. They will go with Dennis and Pam to family

get-togethers, church events, and much more. Pam

expresses that opening her heart to children has been

the easy part. She knows that she is making a differ-

ence in a childs life and that is something that cannot

    be taken away.

Pam also recognizes that fostering isnt always easy.

She and Dennis understand their role is to fill the

gap between the timewhen a child is reunitedwith

the biological parents or with an adoptive family, and

they relish this role. Pam and Dennis agree that pro-

viding love and nurturance for children brings them

such joy. They encourage others to open their hearts

and homes to children in need. Currently, there are

approximately 11,000 children inMissouris foster care

system, and over 200 foster children in the Springfield

area who are waiting for their forever family. These

children not only need the support of a family who is

willing to care for them, but they deserve it.

In May, we celebrate Foster Parent Appreciation

Month. LFCS would like to recognize and give thanks

for our every day heroes who choose to serve children

in need. We believe that it is never too late to give

the gift of a happy childhood. Thank you to Dennis,

Pam, and the other foster parents out there who

    choose to make a difference!

If you are interested in serving children, like Dennis

and Pam, please contact Lutheran Family and

Childrens Services (LFCS) at 417-862-1972. We are

recruiting foster families for children in need. The

average age of a child in foster care is 10 years old.

We need families who are willing to take school-age

children and sibling groups. LFCS is a proud member

of the United Way, serving 28 counties in southwest

Missouri. LFCS provides pregnancy counseling, adop-

tion services, and foster care services. Services are

available to families regardless of age, faith, gender,

    national origin, or race.

Dennis and PamHowardmay look like your average couple. They are proud parents andgrandparents to children who they love. They like to spend time with each other, relishing every

day as an opportunity to give thanks for what theyhave and what is to come. They have many friendsin the area and are active in their church home. ButDennis and Pam are much more than just an ordi-nary family. They have been serving as foster par-ents in the Springfield area since 1993. During thepast 19 years, Dennis and Pam have had over 100children placed with them for temporary care.

there can never be too manypeople to love a child
